Handbag pattern ideas?

Any suggestions for a purse/handbag pattern? I am mostly a beginner at the handbag thing, so I need something of medium complexity. I prefer rotary cut rectangles to dealing with a paper pattern, but I guess I am probably stuck with paper pattern. Also, Lots Of Pockets!

Thanks so much!

Here are my favorite FREE bag pattern sites. You might find something here...

And once you do find a pattern you like, you may surprise yourself at how easy they are to 'cut a little different' here, 'add a little something' there, and you are creating your own purse/bag patterns. Most are easy to enlarge or reduce also.
I would like to add: When making anything from a pattern, it is best to read the patterns over before cutting any fabric. Read and re-read to make sure you understand the patterns to get the end result you are looking for. I have done several purse and bag patterns, and there was one that I found with errors and I even knew a much simpler way to make part of the pattern, which saved me a lot of time. This pattern I bought had the order of creating the bag a little mixed up and it was confusing. I did contact the designer of the bag with my thoughts. Possible some of you know which one I am talking about. (It is not a Bow Tuck) The bag did turn out great though and my DIL loves it.

take a look at the Lazy Girl patterns. If you go to the site there are some videos that cover some parts of construction

I like the Mondo bag or the Midi bag but they are a little advanced but not difficult. The good bag to make in any size and it doesn't look like a tote is this one:

there is a tute on this board here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...s-t141858.html how it goes together but the pattern does not have drawstring, it has straps and is much bigger. My girls love this bag.

Pictures of small bag: http://jessicasews-imsewhappy.blogsp...iffy-tote.html

I made them jumbo size and they are very nice. The picture on the pattern does not do it justice: http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/sto...3&Item_ID=1154

There are hundreds of freebies and check out blogs for tutorials. If you are looking to buy, the lazy girl patterns can't be beat for rotery cutting and simple instruction. Oh and lots of pockets. Once I learned the lazy girl way of making ppckets I adapt all patterns to make the ppckets like she teaches. Kaye England I think it is has vidieos of some of the lazy girl purses.

When making bags/purses do you quilt the material then cut out the pattern?

I have made two of these, and they have turned out well.

Studiokatdesigns.com has some great bag patterns. You can also buy the supplies that you need from that site, which is cheaper than if you were to buy the items individually. In addition, she uses Soft and Stable instead of batting, which adds body to the bag--very nice! http://www.byannie.com/shop/category...ft-and-stable/ Caroly

I love the Margo bag by Lazy Girl. For years I made bags without zippers and got tired of having them spill their contents, especially in the car. Easy zipper application and lots of pockets plus it works for lots of fabric selections.

Making purses can be easier than you think. I have been making them since 2009 and am addicted. My 3 daughters were at first my biggest receivers of my bags but now I have opened a shop on etsy, the girls made me do it! lol It seems sometimes my bags take away time from quilting but using so many bright fabrics for the bags has pushed me out of the box when it comes to fabric choices for my quilts. Check out my shop on etsy it's called SeaIsle Lady.

Handbag Pattern Ideas?

You might want to consider making a Bow Tuck Bag. I made my first bag and I am currently working on my second bag.

JustAbitCrazy 08-22-2012 06:19 AM

I made a Bow Tuck bag, too. It's really a nice bag. The inside walls are lined with pockets, and there is one on the outside, too.

I have to agree that the Lazy Girl designs are easy to use-I love to make handbags and have used a few of those patterns. I have also used Indygo Junction patterns, and have found most of them easy. I just recently finished a Katie Cupcake pattern called My Favorite Handbag, and that was easy too, although I thought she called for too much fusible fleece in too many places, which made it a little bulky-I would not do as much of that in the next one I make.
For those that like a challenge, you can't beat the patterns from Studio Kat Designs-they make lovely bags, but it takes a little more time and skill.

The ones I have made say to quilt sections first, then put together. Not all sections are quilted.

You simply cannot go wrong with any of the patterns by Lazy Girl Design. Joan uses rectangles, has color pictures through out the step by step directions ... she's the bomb!

Here's another resource for bag patterns (these are not freebies, but regular patterns to purchase):

http://www.emmastreasures.com/

I took a class with the designer last year, and she has a lot of really neat techniques that I haven't seen in any other bag patterns. Lots of designs, too.
