wow i have never heard of that i would demand another computer

Linn 04-28-2011 10:46 AM

I once bought a computer from best buys and after taking it in 2 or 3 times they gave me a new computer. I think you need to ask them about a lemon law and I dont see how this can be your fault. What store did you buy this at?

merchjag 04-28-2011 11:56 AM

Bought a MAC it's not a pc so I really am not having many glitches

BARES 04-28-2011 11:57 AM

Bought at Best Buy and I told them that there was a Lemon Law and the "technician"? stated that it didn't cover computers. BUT I know that it does. I now have a history of problems and can now enforce something. Plus with all the great info I have gotten here I have been able to research more things that hadn't occurred to me. Thanks to all.

I had this happen. I wrote to the better Business Bureau and they stepped in. They talked to the computer shop owner and I got a chance to rebut what he said. The computer shop replaced the computer with a brand new one. In the first 6 months I had the computer, I had it at home for about 5 weeks. This was all in the computer shops records and I had written down every issue the computer had and the dates it was in the shop. Stand up for yourself. Sometimes, you get satisfaction.

I had problem with the GEEKS...finally ended up returning the computer and would never ever go back there.
While waiting for service..I heard many unhappy customers and problems....

Call you local college or high school and you'll get someone to do the work right...

Mine does it regularly but only because my DS has a game installed on it that uses something called 'STEAM' to operate. I am negotiating with him to remove it because I am sick of it. Luckily mine does recover each time - so far!

I had three computers down at the same time. One had EQ on it and I was really in a panic. I called and got a price of $300.00 to fix one-I would have to mail it in and all that good stuff. Didn't like that so went on Craig's List to see about buying a used one and reloading whatever I could and restoring some of my data from backups. I found one and called the guy. I really lucked out. He said that all my data was still there and he would show me. Lugged three computers to the neighboring town and he showed me my stuff. I had him fix all three for $300.00.
Now, this is the important part. He put three partitions on my hard drive. 1 with the restored Windows. 2 with all my data and programs. 3 with a Windows Restore Backup.
Since then I have not had any virus issues on any of the computers. If I do, all I have to do is copy over the Windows Restore to the #1 partition.
I did have to make sure that my programs sent my data to the 2nd Partition each time. I did lose my EQ palettes and user made blocks which was my mistake since I didn't have him go deep enough into the program to save them before he wiped the computer.
And my web browser is Mozilla Firefox-much safer than Explorer.

yes check the lemon law. I would go back and raise heck. speak to a manager and if you dont get help/replacement ask for His/Her boss. then the computer company too. HP is not a great choice IMO. Sony has never given me a problem. had it 5 yrs. yes it could be updated but it does everything I need it to. my HP died 2x before the warrenty was up. Best Buy replaced it. THAT one lasted just over 2 yr. GOOD LUCK

sylviasmom 04-28-2011 03:31 PM

I worked as a data processor for 15 yrs, converted over to teleservice center for 11 yrs. We used to call it the blue screen of death. The computers would just sit there unused until new computers came in for the whole building. We were told the blue screen were "unfixable". Nothing anyone did, just something in the inner works of the computer.

Anna.425 04-28-2011 04:19 PM

I think I would find somewhere else to take it.

I have tons of documents downloaded and assignments on file. So yes every moment that my hot little hands are on this baby, I have some work to do.

I paid over $900.00 cash for the whole package; keyboard, tower, screen, mouse, & speakers.
Anyway, after (3) months with it, one morning I noticed a very thin line running up and down vertically on my screen; first thing I did was call the service tech at Altex.
He said bring it in; your pixels have been ruptured or it's your mother board that's faulty.

To make a long story short, it was taken in, swapped out for another screen, mother board was fine, and PC ran slowwwwwwwwwww for many months; it was very frustrating & many virus attacks to endure.

I buckled down, bought some more memory RAM and a better virus protection program, and now it runs and surfs the way I expect it to.

Good luck, I don't think it's a "lemon", but have the service man check it to see if it needs more memory; or a compatible virus program.
There are dozens and dozens more Virus Protection programs out there, so go what's best for you and your PC.

Thankfully my oldest son's nickname is "the internet" so he fixes all our computer needs. But yes sometimes certain issues seem to reoccur. It might be though that the problem is not all the way addressed or solved. My son bought a used commercial computer for me. fixed it and got me on DSL. It all works wonderful and super fast. Yeahhhh!

A jillion years ago, I bought an IBM Aptiva for $3600.00. I felt like I had to kept that one forever. When I had to start paying for repairing it, I got my first eMachine. Haven't been disappointed.

I do the same thing. I just buy the walmart cheapies every 4-5 years. They all work the same. The one I have now is an HP but that is just because it was on sale cheaper than the others.

I have had HP's and have had good luck with them. Am presently using a 2004 HP Media Center which I bought used! It's been great, I do however have everything backed up on an external hard drive! It's not a matter of "if "it's a matter of "when" it will go! I am saving my pennies towards a Mac...that is unless gas goes much higher...then no pennies left! LOL

Ragann63 04-29-2011 08:06 AM

I would have never taken it to the Geek Squad six months after buying it. If you bought it new, it would have still been under warranty. The company should have either replaced it or taken care of the repairs. Now that you have had outside work done on it, you may have voided the warranty. Unless it was a ridiculously expensive computer, it sounds as if you have put more money into it than you probably paid for it. I would go ahead and contact the manufacturer and see what they will do. Good luck!!

jpthequilter 04-29-2011 03:54 PM

Everybody - call up microsoft "Help" if you have windows. They are experts about solving problems....and they don't charge you anything.

If you have other systems call up the operators of your system.

If you dont want to "call up" you can ask for the same help on the internet. jeannie

Not sure what type of computer software that you have but, if you have windows xp I can give you some suggestions about how to restart it from scratch so it may save you some money..You probably already tried this though :) ...Shut the computer off..and BEFORE you reboot it..hold down the f10 button..DO NOT take finger off until after the computer is rebooted ..It should take you to a screen that will ask you if you want to return to factory condition..hit yes..It will take awhile but usually that fixes alot of problems..If all else fails, it maybe cheaper to just buy a new computer than keep paying those huge amounts to fix it..I think you can get a brand new one for right around 400.00 ..(some cheaper, some more expensive)...I love mine but there are times I just want to chunk it out the window..

If you decide to "chuck it" may I suggest a mac? You can get them reconditioned through the apple store online. Mine is 6 years old, and has never been to the shop, and even with brain damage, I can usually figure out what is wrong. I am a very happy convert. (It also doesn't hurt to learn to use one after learning PC first.)

We bought a computer from big box store "BB" and also bought the extended warranty which was for 4 years. Six months before the warranty ran out, we had it in the shop at BB for 3 different times. They had to send it in, it took 6 weeks to get back and still wasn't fixed. After the third time they told us to pick something out we liked and we could spend up to the amount we had on the computer we had bought. (it was about $3200.00 as it was when they were first becoming popular.) Computers had then come down in price and we also were able to get a Panasonic tv and just pay the difference for what it cost. I think we paid $32.00 for it. Had to ask the manager if we could do this and he said YES.) Be sure you get an extended warranty when buying a computer. It usually pays off in alot of cases.

They say it's your fault, have them explain what it is you are doing wrong. If you never had this problem before, I can't believe it's suddenly caused by something you are doing.

wraez 05-04-2011 06:26 PM

I had the same problem from the day that I got the computer. It was so frustrating. Occasionally the computer would turn on correctly but most times it went to blue screen.

Sent it back to company, they called said 'nothing wrong with it'...I think they turned it on once and it was the time it was acting 'normal'.

Put up with it and then one day 'voila' it has been working perfectly for months now.

A friend said that Windows 7 must have figured out the glitch and when the 'updates' come into my computer, it got fixed.

Are you allowing all updates to be loaded into your computer?

BARES 05-10-2011 10:30 AM

Well the problem with the computer continues. I just got it back and it froze/blue screened again. With a history of problems, I called Dell. that was a pain as I spoke with three people (including the first contact that transfered me to a tech) and they all spoke such broken English that I could barely understand. I had to keep asking in different ways to try to understand what they were telling me. I was just contacted by a person that is coming out to replace something in it. His English was so bad that I think he is coming tomorrow. He kept saying "tomorrows tomorrow" then he would say "this today." I think if someone is going to be working in contact with the public then they should be able to communicate effectively with that public. There was a tv show that was about farming out jobs to India and the communication problems it caused. I feel like I was living that show.

1screech 05-10-2011 03:35 PM

Call the manufacturer and tell them your story. Don't just stop with a phone rep. Keep talking and going up until someone replaces your laptop.

BARES 05-10-2011 06:33 PM

thank you. they are supposed to replace the motherboard tomorrow.

Marye 05-11-2011 12:27 PM

My bpower box died on us Sat. and the tech charged us 90.00 to fix it. Hope it works.

BARES 05-11-2011 08:31 PM

Well he came and replaced the motherboard and the DVD drive. Don't know why the DVD drive since I wasn't having a problem with it that I know of. He said that was what was on the service order. I watched him and know he actually put different parts in it.

I hope yours is fixed too. We have to pay a lot for something and it should be last for at least a while.

craftybear 05-11-2011 08:33 PM

Yes, happened to me and mine was still under warranty and HP sent me a new computer free

I was that 1st customer service for several years for HP. My job was to get you to the proper tech,or whoever can help you best. No, I could not authorize a replacement, so don't yell at me when I tell you I can't. And I am not a tech, mostly a call router, and I don't know how to fix the BSOD, nor what causes it. When my computer dies or misbehaves, I call my son-in-law.
When you can't understand the tech, just ask to speak to someone else. Yeah, we disliked the Best Shores policy as well.
