Have you made a waterproof bag?
 

My DH wants me to make a waterproof bag for our motorcycle sidecar. I have been googling for patterns/fabric and saw a couple of interesting blogs. One mentioned "Pul" used for making diaper coverups.

I had thought about using a vynyl tablecloth.

DH asked about the seams and told him I did not know how to make the seams waterproof. Hopefully our bag would not be caught in a downpour.

I'm thinking a bag with a flap on top in addition to a zipper. Also, wondering about a strap with a snap or hook/clasp to attach to a small bar/handle inside the side car so it would not slide around on the floor.

He wants it big enough for our camera and gps and other small items.

If you have made something like this, would you share some tips/ideas with me.

Sounds like a challenge.

We have a motorcycle trailer that we pull behind our Goldwing. Even inside of the closed trailer, I keep our camera and other electronic items in special padded bags that we bought specially for the item as it has been know to leak in a heavy downpour.

I wouldn't consider making a bag for the expensive items if it's going to be exposed to the weather. I have yet to have "me" stay dry in the rain in special rain-gear I wouldn't want to chance our electronics. But that's just the worry wart in me.

Have you considered using rubber backed curtain fabric. It is waterproofed - with the rubber backing - and has a reasonable amount of "body" to it.

I made a "man bag" for hubby by "googling" around and took what I considered to be the best of about 3 or 4 patterns that I found on the net and consolidated them into 1 taking into consideration what he wanted.

did a lot of boating ...hard to find ''waterproof ...ruined a lot of lighters and cigarettes but there is a bag at the dive shops love it .....totally waterproof .................no zipper just roll down ..roll down roll down top and then it has a strap like a life jacket that buckets tight water don't get in cause of all the rolls

I just googled it and found a website called www.thewaterproofstore.com. I would try to make a bag like theirs. There are several different sizes. Also would recommend tarp or denier nylon fabric. Double up the bag one internal with a closure and then one outer bag over that one. Hope this helps! Good luck.

Google Seatlte Fabrics. I think I saw some there when I was looking for neoprene. You can pick out fabrics you are interested in and they will send swatches for a small price.

DH and I each have a recumbent trike, and we take our cameras and phones with us when we ride. I got a "Lock & Lock" plastic container that's large enough to hold all of our critical items, then made a regular zippered fabric bag to hold it all. DH uses the smaller "Lock & Lock" containers to carry his lunch in, and even with watery lunches like soup, we've yet to have one leak. :)

Buying a waterproof bag sounds like a sure thing. If you make your own, I would suggest putting silicone sealer along the seams-- the kind you would use to caulk around the tub in the bathroom. It's a thought. Never tried it.
