Okay my almost 5 year old daughter just said hello to me in ARABIC???? :shock: :shock: :shock: I couldn't even write what she said but I called a friend who knows some Arabic and she said she is right..something marhaba....and/or saleem alaikum?? (sorry if I butchered the spelling)

LOL, they sure are little sponges! When my oldest was about 3 her babysitter was Tunisian, and she picked up some stuff, mostly numbers, colors, and greetings like salam and mahabak (I love you or dear one, I think). :)

Maybe she picked it up from TV with all the news about Egypt.
Merhaba is turkish, lived there for two years. Kids are so smart and absorb so easily. Wish I could learn a new language like little kids do. |
That's so cute. Years ago I met a man from Tunisia that taught me to write and speak a salutation in Arabic but I've long since forgotten how to write it. He said that it meant "Good ________" depending on the time of day that it was spoken.

Wonderful. I've lived in Europe for the last 3-4 years and most of the kids there know at least two languages. I can't stress the importance of investing in a second language for your child as early as 5 or younger if necessary. I made a pact with my granddaughter's other set of grandparents that they only speak Spanish to her at thier house and of course we would only speak English at our house. She turned 2 on Valentine's day and she goes from one language to the other effortlessly. Now my husband and I are trying to get her for summers where she will attend German child care. See where this is going? lol.

Go Mom! We really need to encourage bilingual teaching in school because the world is right outside our door and sometimes English just don't cut it.
