Is it possible to roast a whole chicken (with dressing) in a crockpot. I've never seen whole chicken for $.88 per pound & they are on special this week. No oven in my RV so need to use crockpot. LOL. Is this do-able.

blue10moon9 12-02-2010 04:15 PM

Food.com says you can - I've never tried it though.

I think so. If your CP is big enough to hold it. I cook large pieces of chicken in mine all the time. I don't see a lot of difference in that and in a roaster in the oven when you put the dressing inside.

purplemem 12-02-2010 04:18 PM

I do it, no problem. Just have to make sure the chicken fits!

cathyvv 12-02-2010 04:21 PM

I've done a whole chicken in my crockpot, but not with dressing inside. I found that when the chicken is done, there's a lot of chicken fat in the bottom of the crockpot. Because of that, I'd do my stuffing separately. But you have nothing to lose by trying!

I make ziti in the crockpot for family get togethers. Reserves my oven for other things on busy days...like home made bread!

Sadiemae 12-02-2010 04:24 PM

I do it! I cook as many things as possible in a crock pot, so I don't have to watch as closely as other types of cooking.

grma33 12-02-2010 04:27 PM

I was wondering the same thing recently and don`t remember where I saw or read this but make small balls out of tin foil to put in the bottom so the chichen sits on top out of all the juice{fat}

I roast whole chickens all the time. Depending on the size of your crock, put an alumium pie plate upside down, or crumpled aluminum foil, in the bottom. This will lift the chicken up & keep it from "stewing" in the juices.

I read somewhere that it is advised not to stuff a chicken in the crockpot because it won't reach a high enough internal temperature to kill the bacteria. I wouldn't want that sitting in there all that time (8 hours?) I do chicken breasts and pork ribs in the crock pot but not sure I would want to do a whole chicken, maybe cut up.

The difference is that the oven is at a steady temp of 350 degrees and a crockpot is a slow warm up over several hours.

Tink's Mom 12-02-2010 04:42 PM

I have done whole chicken without the stuffing many times...I not sure about the stuffing...I would be concerned about samonella.

true4uca 12-02-2010 04:54 PM

Thanks for all the comments. I do have a toaster oven how do I cook dressing in that. I've only ever cooked dressing inside the bird, that's the only way I've ever seen it done. Living in an RV sure has cooking challenges. I do have a toaster oven, micro, electric frying pan & crockpot. NO oven.

Me, i think of my crockpot as a quilters tool!

chicken is excellent in the crock..but i have never cooked it with stuffing..

MZStitch 12-02-2010 05:04 PM

I would imagine a bread pan would fit in your toaster oven Just mix up your stuffing as usual and heat it up in your toaster oven! Some people actually prefer cooking thier stuffing seperately, for me it just means an extra pan to wash, lol!

karenchi 12-02-2010 05:16 PM

Yes....I do a turkey breast in Crock Pot....Delicious....Just cook long enough...

Chele 12-02-2010 05:20 PM

I don't know about stuffing. Sounds kind of dicey because of the low temps. I'd do the dressing separately or make another side. Chicken is perfect for the crock pot though. Take advantage of that good sale. You can cut it up too. I usually skin any chicken going in the crock pot, or brown it first. The skin gets kind of gross in a crock pot. It's a cinch to remove once the dish is done, but just not palatable and it makes everything greasy. The grease is easily spooned off, so no worries if you want to forgo the skinning part.

You can add whatever spices you like (Italian spices, canned tomatoes, onions, garlic, celery and fresh peppers to serve over pasta). Or Mexican spices with fresh veggies (onion, peppers, jalapeno, corn, etc.) Serve with rice and tortillas to make burritos. Garnish with avocado, salsa and sour cream. Or go Southern and cook your chicken with barbecue sauce/spices. Throw some raw potatoes on top the last couple of hours and shake out a bagged salad for a complete dinner. There are as many recipes as you can think of. Crock pots are a quilter's best friend!

I put whole chickens in the crock pot all the time and have for years, never with stuffing inside though.

A good way to make stuffing I use Stove Top stuffing mix I add an egg, some extra sage, cut up onion and celery add chicken broth and stir that all up and put in a pan and bake it,You could use your toaster oven right before it's done I put a few butter patties on the top and let melt and it's ready to serve. My family loves it.

plainpat 12-03-2010 03:49 AM

We spent many yrs as full time RVers, but always had an oven. Small, but it served the purpose.I use my oven almost daily, so couldn't do without.
The slow cooker mfgrs usually have recipes on line. You could send an e mail & ask.
A toaster oven would work using a small pan, well greased (or use "Release" foil.I'd cover it for 20 mins, then uncover till done as you like.Maybe try a small amt & see how it does?

I did our TG stuffing with the stove top method. Did much what Sherry said. Our RV Microwave is also a convection oven but I think it is slow and not true temperature. We use our CP a lot. Our RV does have an oven and I can do a 10-12 lb turkey in it. Most of the campgrounds have dinners for TG and we did that the first year but hubby missed the leftovers.

BellaBoo 12-03-2010 08:05 AM

You can knock off a couple hours of cooking time in the crock pot by pre heating the crock and lid with boiling water before adding the food. For roasting meats in a crock pot, make big aluminium foil balls and layer the bottom of the pot. Put your meat on top of the balls. I spray the balls with Pam to keep the meat from sticking to them. This keeps the meat out of the juices.

true4uca 12-03-2010 09:16 AM

Thanks for all the ideas. I will use the stove top dressing, as we like it.Also the balls of foil to keep meat out of juices. Another meal idea is born. LOL.

plainpat 12-03-2010 11:09 AM

Just another way if fixing Stove Top.I cooked onion & celery in a bit of butter or broth, added a dash of sage & maybe chopped giblets.....then stirred into ST.Very tasty.

Ditto and I use the Cornbread dressing. When I use to fix for large family dinners, I mixed a box of regular dressing with a box of cornbread dressing.

The first month in the RV, I realized that I needed a roaster oven. Just keep it in the basement, set it up under the awning when in use and I'm a happy camper! Love being on the road, but those tiny little ovens are a joke - have even considered tearing it out and putting in an apartment size range, but that's for another time at this point. I use the roaster for anything that the crock pot doesn't look like it's capable of handling, have even baked pies in it.

true4uca 12-03-2010 02:20 PM

Problem solved. We just got back from Walmart. They have a toaster oven (GE) with built in rotisserie. It says you can even bake a 12 inch pizza. Only $49. We were going to get (next year) one of those micro/convection ovens. This is more in my price range. Will test it later baking muffins. I'll buy another chicken & try it out on Sunday. Hey it's Walmart, can always return it.

Annaquilts 12-03-2010 02:24 PM

I would be hesitant to stuff the cavity but besides that it would work. Have you also considered those plug in skillets with a lid like Rival. In the summer I put that out side and put to fryers in it for about 2 hours. Yummmm! Keeps my whole house from getting hot because I am not running the ovens. Those together are my mainstay when camping with 13.

mshawii 12-03-2010 03:30 PM

I would put some celery and carrots and a couple of potatoes in there so the chicken is sitting on something besides the crockpot bottom. it should make its own juice and take on the flavor of what it is cooked with. I was looking for a lip smacking smilie, but couldn't find one to add to this. Darn! Jan

i cook stove top in the microwave and cook the chicken in the crock pot.

This is what I would do............

I would slice potaotes, peeled or un peeled it is your choice. I would layer then in the bottom of the crock. I would mix together milk, a little flour, onion powder, salt and pepper. I would pour the milk mixture over the potatoes to cover I would put the chicken on top and let the crock pot do it's thing. You will have chilken with scalloped potaotes. Yes there will be the juice/fat from the chicken in the potatoes however it adds flavor and it REAL scalloped potatoes butter is always add so the fat will take the place of the butter.

Another recipe...........1 can cream of chicken soup or any cream soup you would like. Put the soup in the bottom of the crock. Fill the can with rice and add that to the crock. fill the can with milk add that. Stir. top with your chicken. Not says comfort like chicken and rice.

As for the stuffing, here is and easy peasy recipe with no fuss. 1 bag of butter garlic croutons, 1 can chicken broth, 1 tb dried onion flakes. Heat the broth add the onion and croutons. Toss and let it set in the pot until broth is absorbed.

Again I learned about chicken in the crock pot. The foil part is valuable info. Thanks for sharing.

pookie ookie 12-03-2010 10:00 PM

For years it's been recommended to *never* stuff a bird regardless of the oven used.

I put a whole fryer in my crockpot on top of several foil wrapped potatoes. Delicious. I always use a heavy dry rub on the chicken. Takes six hours on high.

Pzazz 12-04-2010 05:32 PM

Both DH and I work so the CP is our friend lots of days!!

I often put potatoes, carrots, and onion in the crock, place the chicking on top..add whatever seasoning strikes my fancy that day. We come home to wonderful smells and a ready meal. (And minimal cleanup before heading to the sewing room after!!!)

I would think the dressing would be soupy and awfully fat if cooked together, however, I do make crockpot dressing for the holidays, and it is excellent. Maybe cook the chicken one day and refrigerate, then cook the dressing the next day and add the cooked chicken for the last hour.

I always cook the turkey (or chicken) ahead and cut it off the bone, because I serve it on a platter anyway. It sure improves my ability to get everything done and on the table hot and at the same time. The portrait of Thanksgiving with all the dishes on the table and dad bringing in the 40 lb bird in to be carved at the table is beautiful, but as a practical woman, congealed mashed potatoes is very unappealing. By the time you finish carving enough to serve the table, everything else is stone cold. Norman Rockwell obviously didn't do the cooking...
