Help! How to make a bedskirt?
 

I am a newby to the board and have been blown away by the many beautiful quilts I have seen here! I have noticed that many of you have bedskirts on your beds and it just adds to the charm of the quilts. I have limited resources and live in the boonies. I have been thinking maybe I could make a couple of bed skirts for my twin beds by using some old double-bed sheets and adding some decorative stitching or trim. I was wondering if there is a pattern for bedskirts on line somewhere out there. I only have an older small Singer machine and never had a sewing lesson. I am self taught with books and mags. Any help and ideas are welcome. Thanks, Mary

Wish I could help you, but I'm pretty sure there is a way. Some of these talented quilters will know. Maybe if you searched for it on the web you could find a pattern. The last one I put on my bed was from an old skirt that kept
slipping and sliding off the bed and would just hang and look terrible so took it off and found a "bedspread" that went
all the way to the floor. Then I decided I wanted a quilt so I made one and it didn't go all the way to floor; so I retrieved the old bedskirt and cut off the ruffled part and bought some of those swirly pins and screwed it into my mattress. Worked beautiful. Good luck on your bedskirt. Know someone will come along and help you.

Sure, you can make your own. You need to decide if you want a ruffled skirt or a tailored (non ruffled, just one or two pleats). If you are limited on the amount of fabric, the tailored one will take much less. You can also just pin the skirt to the box spring, or use an older sheet or ugly fabric to make the decking, as it will not show.

Lots of ways to do this. Cut your sheets to the size of the mattress (just the top, plus an inch for each of the long sides and the bottom). You can do a ruffled bedskirt to attach to each of the sides, or do what I did - a tailored one. About every 12-18 inches you can do a double pleat...the easiest way to see it is to Google it as a 'tailored bedskirt', and you'll see how it looks. Very easy to make and simple, which is nice with quilts. You could just do a simple skirt and have scallops on the edge, too, or prairie points if you want to make things a bit more fancy. If its scallops, use a bread plate to draw your scallop pattern, and prairie points are easy to do....there are videos to show you how. I'm sure there are videos to show you how to make bedskirts, too, if you're a visual person.

Here is how I do it...I cut an old sheet to the size of the box springs top with a seam allowance along the sides and foot of the bed..I hem the top edge or use the part of the sheet that is hemmed. Next, I measure how far it is from the top of the box springs to the floor...I cut fabric again leaving room for the seam at the top and the hem at the bottom. I measure the sides and end of the bed and double the total. I cut and hem the fabric and ruffle the top and attach that to the old sheet I have cut for the top of the box springs. Is that clear as mud? I hope not. It is really easy to do and they do look so pretty. I have also pleated the fabric rather than ruffled..both work well. You can do it!!!

I made a bedskirt - queen size-. I used an old sheet for the base of the skirt..the part that is positioned between the ox pring and the mattress. It was fun to make but i used a whole bolt to do it. 15 yards. I did use my ruffler foot. I think next time i will buy one in a solid color. Much cheaper.

I love that striped fabric with that quilt, very beautiful.
I have made several and I pin them to the box springs edge, that way I can put the mattress on it without it getting messed up. I cut a sheet to fit the top of the box springs and attach a ruffle to it. I like the off white best as most of my quilts will go with it.

I have a king size bed and standard bedskirts are almost impossible to get on straight and even. The weight of the king mattress and it's huge size prevent completely removing the mattress to lay bedskirts flat. And even when I have taken the mattress off, the bedskirts move when you move the mattress back on the foundation. Somehow, and I say that because I don't know where I found them, I discovered the nicest bedskirts and a fabulous idea - why in the world I didn't think of it myself? I found skirts that are complete on 3 sides, the fourth side around the head of the bed is wide elastic! So easy I can change the bedskirt even without changing the rest of the linens! I tried the bedskirts that are held on to a flat sheet concept with velcro and found the same problems as you have with a complete bedskirt. Now I am making all kinds of contrasting bedsirts at the perfect drop for my bed and at a fraction of the cost traditional bedskirts are sold.
