help with Mice
 

i hope someone can help me as I am being terrified by mice I have 4 electronice devises pluged in they are sapose to drive away mice but they aren't doing the job. I also have 3 of those traps that they go inside and get trapped inside I have 7 sticky traps out and 3 regular mouse traps, But the mouse or mice are too smart to get caught I baited my traps with peanutbutter. The mouse just makes it self at home, yesterday I saw him twice eating my dogs food. He ran under the chair I was setting in and of course scurries back and forth often. I can not put out poision as I am afraid the cats that live upstairs might catch a mouse that had ingested poision and get sick or die. I have also put out soda as I heard they can't burp or pass gas so they die. I have sprinkled peppermint oil all over the house I am out of ideas can anyone help me this has been going on for 3 months.

but I'm quite sure you will not get rid of the mice until you find and close off the ways they are getting into your place. Are you renting? This would be the owner's responsibility. A business such as Terminix can do an inspection to find out where the mice are getting in and plug up those entries.

not so sure about cat. unfortunately some cats are not mousers. i used to have three cats and still had mice. i think the cats thought they were toys. my dog was a better mouser.

as someone said, find out where they are getting in. also, make sure the trap is set in the path they are using. they don't seem to deviate from those paths much. especially along walls.

This is what I do to keep mice out of my storage shed.Fill a 5gal bucket 1/2 way with water and smear peanut butter just couple inches below the inside rim.They will fall in trying to get to PB and drown.

My Mom had a german shepherd that caught mice - I think better than a cat! One paw and the mouse was done for, ha! :)

This trap is just about foolproof. Here in NY we call it an adirondack mousetrap. I googled it and found it referred ti as "white trash mousetrap", "bucket ' o death" (I have to say I like that name LOL) and redneck mousetrap.

My friend who has a cabin in the adirondacks swears by it. Me, I have cats but I close off my sewing rooms to them. So in those rooms I have poison. (when you live out in the country in a 100 year old house you are bound to get the occasional critter.) Poisoned animals usually try to find a dark quiet place to die. I have never worried about my cats catching a poisoned mouse. The only drawback is I did have one die where I couldn't find it but I sure could smell it. YUCK. By the time I found the mummified remains it didn't stink any more.

I can't get my cat or dog up in the ceiling! Did poke a small hole through the ceiling one time and put a rat bait up there. Really worked!! Afraid that was years ago and its time for another.

do you put the peanut butter on the top where they say to put it?? We found if you put a small amount under that spot the mouse has to work harder to get it and gets caught

I had an awful problem with mice. Tried all the plug in the wall devices---all that did was draw more & make it worse. I was beside myself. Tried the sticky traps etc. Nothing workedl. By accident my washer overflowed & I had to pull it out to clean up the water. OMG! I found the mice had come thru an outside dryer vent into the vent tubing & chewed a hole thru the dryer vent tubing that was inside the house in my laundry room. The mice were coming in like crazy at this point. I had a metal dryer tubing installed & screened the outside vent. Boy this helped a lot! But I still had trouble with the mice coming in somewhere else in the house. I smelled gas by my kitchen stove & my nephew came over & pulled out the stove. This is second place they were coming into the house. There was space around the gas pipe to the outside & mice were coming in. Had this fixed and that finally stopped the mice from coming in the house. But the first thing you need to do is get rid of the plug in devices because that draws them all to your place. I never had any trouble after fixing those 3 things. But thought I would go crazy til then.

Oh at work a mouse died in the wall somewhere and for a whole month i had to sit in Reception and work. no one wanted to relieve me!! talk about smell. The environmental guy said it was bad for me. ya think??
good for you not putting poison out!! cat's don't always want mice. i won't let mine (she goes out on a leash) find the wood mice that are in our yard. i'm always afraid she'd get something from eating one. yuck.

There is a contraption called a rat zapper. We used one here to catch chipmunks until we got cats. This little device is run on batteries. You put a little bait in it, the animal goes in it, and it gets a quick, humane jolt. It can be used over and over, and has no ill effects on the environment.

Everyone in entitled to their own beliefs, but poisoning an animal is a slow painful death, and also, if by chance the poisoned animal gets consumed by another animal down the raid, the trail of poison continues.

Also if it gets spilled, etc, more spread of poison. I prefer a quick, clean kill, but that is just my two cents.

The best bait I have ever used is peanut butter cookie dough. I have no idea why it works better than plain peanutbutter. It just does. It has not failed me yet. Best wishes.

use decon. it dries them out, and they never stink. and put a little water close to it, if you can. as soon as they drink, they fall over dead.

Too bad but it's true that cats are not necessarily good mousers. I live in the country too and had problems with mice until I found out where they were coming into the house. Check around your plumbing going into and out of the house, any drains or vents. If you have to it's worth getting a service like Terminex to help you out. Once you find the openings, stuff the openings with steel wool. I did this 2 years ago and have had no mice since then.

Don't use peanut butter. Get a piece of fat meat such as fried bacon. TIE IT ON THE TRAP WITH GOOD SEWING THREAD SO THEY CAN'T PULL IT OFF. We use this all the time, when we see a mouse. WRAP, WRAP WRAP. They get their teeth hung in the thread and they are dead. la,la,la. This is the spring type trap. The spring comes down and raps him good and kills him.

If you are seeing it during the day eating dog food it might not be a mouse. You could have a mole, they are pesky and harder to catch. One tip I had never heard of was when you do set a trap put it right next to the wall as mice tend to follow the wall when they run. That's another reason I wonder if you have a mole instead of a mouse. Good luck.

I read somewhere to put dryer sheets in drawers and places they come in. Course this was for a camper. I am going to try that this year when we store our camper. Every spring I have to clean mice poop from the camper after their winter party.

I'm looking for something also. I looked under the kitchen sink yesterday and they had eaten an entire bar of Lava soap! Right now I put Bounce dryer sheets under there because I know they work to keep them out of cars.

I have a cat who is too busy eating to chase a mouse :-(

Maybe this will help. My friend lived on a farm and she said they used glass pop bottles with a dab of peanut butter in the bottom. Placed the bottles on their sides. The mice weren't able to get traction against the glass to escape.

I've filed this information away for when the occasion arises, but can we still buy glass bottles????

I'm going to try the bucket .So far the only mice I've caught in traps are baby ones.I have one dark in color one that eats the goodies -springs the trap then comes out in the middle of the room gets up on his hind legs and I swear he has his thumbs in his ears wiggles his fingers and sings NaNaNa you can't catch me.The little smart aleck has to go down !!!

I could loan you my 7-lb. dachshund. Years ago, she caught a mouse and shook him, to death. I heard skittering, then there she was, standing with a dead mouse in her mouth! UGH!!! That one got in, via a new dryer, we'd just had delivered!

As others have said, check everywhere for openings. If you live in a brick house, stuff all the weep holes with steel wool or a bit of screening (push it into the hole, with a screwdriver, with the jagged edges facing outside). Any outside holes should either be sealed or stuffed with steel wool/metal screening. Mice can enter through very small spots! If you have a breezeway, to a garage, check where there areas join, at the top. Even after you close the entries, you still need to treat the mice that may already be in the walls.

If you can, call an exterminator. He/she can locate the entry points and provide the best way to safely get rid of the mice.

This summer for the first time ever we had either a pack rat or mice eating the wires in our car...Cost us around $500 before out of the blue I thought of moth balls...took a 6 in square of muslin, sewed down the side making a rectangle and filled with Dollar Store mothballs....placed them around the engine and no more wires eaten...did leave them out one night and another wire chewed...put them back and no more chewing...so I'm convinced this did the trick....I'd rather smell the moth balls than dead mice...also would rather they just stay away than deal with having to dispose of dead bodies....Pets dislike them too so no danger to them either... I'd just make enough to put around the perimeter or where I thought they might be coming in...Good luck...hope this works for you...

I totally agree. For years I had the big problem with field mice and tried everything. Finally I got a cat and it's been about 6yrs and I've never seen a mouse since. She even takes care of the occasional water bugs that we get. She's an older cat; now about 11yrs old but still does a great job. It's like the mice know not to come to our house because she's there.

Our mechanic found a mouse nest in the car vent! They were attracted to the warmth of the engine. She suggested putting steel wool soaked with cinnamon oil in any places where they were accessing the garage. Worked like a charm.

This is the time of the year, when field mice come into the house looking for warm winter shelter. The ideal time to look for where they are getting into the house. It is amazing to me how small of a space they can use to gain entrance. Finding and plugging these spaces is a must. Making sure that things like flour, bird seed etc. are kept swept up. We have good luck with a regular old fashioned mouse trap, baited with peanut butter or soft cheese. Easy for me, as my husband empties the traps.

My best luck with a mousetrap was to use bacon-raw! We have a brand new home with an unfinished basement and partial crawl space. Until we finish that basement, we're going to have mice every fall. I hate this, but there's nothing I can do but trap them every fall.
We put bacon on the trap and catch them easily. We've also used peanut butter on a cracker piece-mushed down against the trigger with success. Good luck-they're smart little critters!

For those of you who don't like mousetraps, there is a humane trap called "mice cube". I have tried it, and it works... though my cats are more efficient.

I am sorry you are having a mouse problem!! I have three cats that chase anything that moves, wanna borrow them? I really hope you can find a solution and get rid of them.

This is the time of year mice are looking to find shelter for the winter. I've found chocolate to be the best bait with peanut butter second. LOL the grand prize is Peanut Butter Cup candy. Snap traps are the most humane. Clean up all food/pet food and set traps in dark places, against walls, etc. The little guys can get in 1/4 inch spaces so it is very hard to fill all the entries.

Let those upstairs cat down by you to get some exercise and****render viddles****.

I have never heard of the 5 gallon bucket idea until tonight. DH returned home form his civil war re-enactment at Antietam, MD and told me about it. Then I find it on here. WOW! The other week one of those critters was on my computer desk twice. I moved the tower slightly and the next time that mouse ran along the tower he ran out of space. Needless to say when he ran off the edge, I had the trash can waiting for him to jump into. It was nice of it to acomodate me that way. Now where did I put that bucket.
