Sorry we fly to Florida so no help.

You can take 285 W which loops around and returns to 75, however, I always found it best to bite the bullet and go straight thru. I would avoid going to work and leaving work times, if possible.

We go from Virginia to Louisiana to visit relatives and hate the Atlanta mess. We have tried everything and the best we come up with is for us to stop before Atlanta and stay in a motel overnight, then leave really early in the morning, say 4 AM and take the ring road around the city. We do the same thing coming home. Once we decided to go to the other side of Atlanta to stay the night and we ended up driving west as the sun was setting - not a good idea!

Best advice I got was avoid rush hours, and stay in middle lanes.

I've driven thru Atlanta many, many times alone and with the recent (couple years ago) highway changes it really isn't so bad. Like adamae said, avoid rush hour, stay in the middle lanes and just pay attention. But after being stuck in a 2 hour traffic jam a year or so ago, hubby absolutely refuses to drive through it. A slight lack of patience on his part!

If we find we are hitting Atlanta during rush hour stop for dinner and a little shopping. I have found the by-pass a mess as well. I get in the inside lane that requires more than 1 person & just stay in that lane. Be careful with the exit lanes. This lane seems to move smoother.

I drive through Atlanta frequently going from Florida to Indiana to see my daughter and it's usually around noon. I've never had problems but definitely pay attention. I'm usually alone so I don't use the HOV lanes. I have always found the people willing to let you in if you need to change lanes quickly. Best advice I can give you is to take a deep breath, let it out and go. I would rather drive through Atlanta than Jacksonville, Florida or Jackson, Mississippi.

I live in the Atlanta area and have daughters that live down town so I am used to the traffic.
My best advice to pass through Atlanta is either go early before 5:30 AM or late 9:30 to 10:00 AM and stay off 285 if possible. Too many trucks.
Use the HOV lane if you are eligible.
Good luck. And pray there are no traffic accidents or it isn’t raining.
