Help pulling out weed vines
I have just moved back to a home I rented and the tenant made not only a mess of the house but neglected the yard as well. I have these weed vines growing call Greenbriar. They have great big thorns and their root system is a rhizome sort of root and they send out shoots through their rhizomes making more vines grow. It is almost impossible to dig theses rhizomes out. How do I get rid of them.

I read you can use Garlon 3AŽ. It's a spray on herbicide. If your organic you can try vinegar and dishwashing soap. A gallon of vinegar and three tablespoons soap.
|
A friend mixes his own herbicide with a gallon of vinegar, 1 cup (I think?) of Epson salts and 1 cup (I think?) of Dawn dishwashing soap. (He says the recipe is online, in case got the measurements of Epson salt and dishwashing soap wrong.)

Some plants and weeds that spread by roots are impossible to remove. The best you can do is control them with digging out what you can and cutting new growth as soon as you see it. If you can mow them, do so.

I feel your pain. I dealt with this pesky vine for some time. It is tough to kill, but you can do it. What I did was to cut each vine and paint on or spray on a product called "Tordon". It's a brush/tree killer. You need to get the chemical on as soon as you cut the vine so it gets into the flesh of the vine before it scars over. It will travel down to the root system to kill it. It's tedious doing it for every stem of the vine, but not that bad. I had a lot of vines, so I just poured the Tordon in a spray bottle and sprayed it on the tip of each freshly cut vine. Here is the chemical--it is blue so you can see where you have sprayed it.

Sometimes i can get rid of weeds by using those small yard torches made for that purpose and you can burn them as they show up. I think they can be rented too.

Use JustABitCrazies vinegar recipe. It works. I would really soak the roots and spray the foliage. Wait a couple of days and do it again.

I wonder if the stronger "cleaning vinegar" would help it work - even better?
|
I have used just vinegar, nothing added, successfully to kill many weeds. Cut the weed and pour on a little vinegar.
|
I'm assuming it will kill the grass too if there's any there?
|
Boiling water does a great job on any pesky weeds.

I hadn't heard of Tordan so I looked it up. It is recommended to kill some pretty tough old brush and trees, so I bet it will work on your greenbriar. It won't kill the grass, but it will kill other broadleaf plants that it gets on, such as perennial flowers, peonies, lilies, etc. It is systemic; goes into the roots, so can kill the underground parts of the plant.
I was going to suggest using Triclopyr, which is another systemic brush killer. Maybe this Tordan is newer. Don't give up. It takes a while to work, but you will have better results than just something that top-kills, like round-up. |
Online you will find the recipe as Weed Be Gone
1 Gallon Vinegar 2 cups Epsom Salt 1/4 cup Dawn (Original blue) dishwashing soap It will kill anything that you spray it on. Just mix and spray in the morning, after the dew has evaporated. Go back after dinner and the weeds are all gone. |

I find stronger vinegar at nursery's. I have had wonderful results with it for every thing above ground. When I have killed all above ground I pour boiling water over the root area and it takes care of the rest. It will kill anything else around that area also so you have to be very careful with other plants and grass.

I have been fighting Japanese bittersweet in my front yard. I think the birds planted it, but it's some nasty stuff. It is trying to take over everything out there. I will be trying some of your suggestions for sure!

I used boiling water on 4 o'clocks after many many other mixtures and digging.

You can find cleaning vinegar at Dollar Tree stores for $1.

Thanks for the recipe, Sails. We have something that grows very large and sends roots horizontally under the dirt. I have no idea what it is called but it's a real pain to try to get rid of.
