Help! What to do with this?
 

So several years ago, I had this "bright" idea that I'd make a faux fur winter coat. Well, it turns out that when trying to sew the pockets on, it just won't go through any of my machines, it's too thick. I tried a walking foot (which I think I accidently just broke) and tried their suggestions of loose tension, larger stitches, and lower the feed dogs, and none of it works, and I've decided I'm giving up on the project. The basic parts of the jacket are put together, but the coat is so oversized (back then I didn't know much about sizing), that it could easily be cut up and used for something else, but I don't know what. I thought about cat mats for the shelter, but they only want knitted, crocheted, or fleece mats. I don't know what to do with all this faux fur. It's real nice stuff, a silver fox color, and I'd like to do something besides just donate it, but I don't know what, any thoughts on this would be real helpful........

Could you possibly use it to make stuffed animals or maybe fun pillows for beds or chairs?

Have you tried it on your treadle? Or is it so thick that it won't fit under the presser foot? Just a thought.

Another thought is have you combed the fur away from the seam edge?

I tried it on the treadle and it wouldn't go through...

Fun pillows or a simple throw ?

That is too bad. I have heard many say their treadles could handle many things that other machines can't.

Your machines aren't made to handle thick fur material. Do you know anyone who has an industrial machine that you could use to sew it?

When sewing fake fur, I was taught to carefully trim the fur off within the seam allowance & hold/tape the rest back from where you are sewing. This lessens the bulk & ensures that you are getting a solidly sewn seam without all the fighting. Also, be sure to comb/brush the fur on the right side of your project & the seams will disappear.

Do you have an Alterations shop near you? Maybe they can help to complete your project since they usually have industrial machines.

There's always the last resort.....hand sew the larger seams. But that's if you want it as a jacket. Oversized continues to be a current trend. Girls, of all ages, love pillows made with fake fur. Maybe some Christmas gifts?
