holidays

Have other countries other than the USA moved some of their "commemorative" days - such as Columbus Day here- to the nearest Monday?

Do you think doing so has diluted the mesning of the day?

Not that I'm aware of.

The "special" holidays, like Memorial Day should not be moved for the opportunity of having a nice long week-end. This holiday for our passed protectors need to be observed within their original intent. Not just as a day to get drunk and party.

Whether a holiday is on a specific date or a Monday close to the original date..it is still not a reason to overindulge and forget the meaning of the day.....but some do it even when the holiday day/date are in sync......it's a choice some make no matter...

If you remember, they moved Veterans day to the second Monday in November too. There were so many request, they moved it back to Nov 11. There are some people that don't even know that Memorial day originally was on May 30 instead of the 4th Monday in May. I wish they would move that day back too.

It's as bad as having people wish you a "Happy Memorial Day". Sort of like saying "Have a happy funeral"
