housework

We had the grandkids over the weekend, 5 of them. We had a wonderful time, but every time I walk through the kitchen, I find another sticky spot. So, as much as I want to go down to my sewing cave, I guess I should sweep and mop the floor before it is just one big sticky mess. DH just finished mowing, and tracked in some grass too, so time to get to work. If I try to ignore, I'll just feel guilty while quilting so I'd better "git 'er done"!

Jingle 04-23-2013 09:01 AM

I can identify with you as to tracked in mud, grass and such. If I cleaned at night I could keep the floor clean until my Husband and little dog got up. Little dog refuses to eat at her food bowl. She doesn't eat crumbs off the floor either. If I tried to keep the floors clean that would be all I would get done.
I work everyday and get home at 5:30P. If I fix supper, I have about two hours of sewing time. I do make the bed and take care of cats, bird and sweep the kitchen before I leave. My Husband washes and dries dishes. He works full time also, I drive us to and from.

That's one floor I would take care of now rather than waiting. It will just get worse if let go! I feel your pain...... but also envy you have 5 grandchildren!!!

julie 04-23-2013 11:23 AM

Floor is finished, taking a short break before heading to the cave. I had to wait on DH, for some reason he kept walking back and forth from the kitchen to his home office. Finally I asked him to tell me when he was done walking so I could do the floor with no interruptions! lol

I know just what you mean. I keep my grandkids every Friday and every other weekend also. My house looks like a tornado blew through it. It drives me batty somedays but I know they will be grown and gone before I can blink. Seems like it was just yesterday that I was picking up after their Mommy and auntie.

cathyvv 04-23-2013 12:28 PM

Yes, sticky requires immediate attention!

fairydawn 04-23-2013 01:01 PM

Yup! I know how that is! They descend on the house like a swarm of bees and before you know it they are gone, leaving an aftermath of sticky fingerprints and messes. I always have to go through the whole house with the vac, mop the floors, wipe down the door knobs, hallway, and hand railings. I have 11 little darlings with another on the way. Love every minute though! I always try to get the house work done before I sew. Then I don't feel so guilty for spending so much time at it.

Same here, but grands live across the country so when they come (rarely - we go there mostly) I just let it go while they are here and then tackle it. They aren't destructive, but, wow, sticky, crumby, cluttery, etc.

maryb119 04-23-2013 05:10 PM

Sticky floors will mop up in a few minutes but grandkids grow at lightening speed. Enjoy them while they are small.

Nammie to 7 04-23-2013 05:50 PM

I know how you feel - but I would rather have them come and have a good time. When they go home the house is so quiet. I just pick everything up, sweep, wash tables, etc and I'm good to go. It is worth that little bit of effort in order to have them here. I have 7 and we have a wonderful time!

stablemom 04-23-2013 08:38 PM

I hear you about the housework. But I only have the 1 grandson and he is 5 months old. Still adjusting to having baby stuff back in the house. What I can`t believe is the amount of diapers that add up thru the week !

Grandma Peg 04-23-2013 08:50 PM

Housework is never fun but unfortunately has to be done. The memories with our time with grandchildren priceless!!!

Anniedeb 04-23-2013 10:25 PM

I agree about the sticky floor and general mess after they have left.....but I can't bring myself to wipe off the sliding glass door...when the sun shines just right, I see perfect little hand prints!!

quilt queen 04-24-2013 03:05 AM

I thought I would never have Grandchildren..but God blessed me with three wonderful and "sticky" girls..but, I remember how fast my children grew...and I would give just about anything to have those times again...so with my GrandGirls, I don't worry about the messes..I just enjoy the blessings...I have little drawings on a couple of doors that remind me just how fast time moves...I don't want to remembered as the cleanest house on the block...just may one of the neatest MaMaws on the block. have a good day...and join us in Texas and pray for rain...anywhere..anytime.

My DHs hobby is cleaning up after me! I hate cleaning. DH has always, for forty years, gone behind me to put magazines, material, tools and anything else away after I walk through a room.
DH tells me he knows I work very hard through the week and should indulge the weekends my way.
I love him dearly:D

solstice3 04-24-2013 06:09 AM

I just have DH at home now and he does fine with the grass, leaves and sticky spots without children or grandchildren LOL

BellaBoo 04-24-2013 07:38 AM

I have two grandkids and they are 16 years apart so no messes. A houseful of grands would be wonderful!

julie 04-24-2013 08:13 AM

Anniedeb, I'm with you! Got everything else back in some semblance of order, but just can't bring myself to wipe those little handprints off the patio door! Every time I see them, I just smile! Love my grandkids!! A couple years ago, our oldest grandson, who is now 10, said, "Mommy always says no, Daddy sometimes says no, and Grandma never says no." He's got me figured out, and the other 4 are learning that too!

Stitchit123 04-24-2013 08:14 AM

I don't mind mud-grass clippings or what ever gets tracked into the house ----but I can not deal with sticky. Sticky any thing just freaks me out. GC's would not be out of the drive before I had mop in hand..

christyld60 04-24-2013 01:56 PM

We didn't think we'd ever have Grandkids, either....our first and probably only was born last Sept. I can't wait for the sticky, messy moments to begin !! :)

Stitch124 04-25-2013 04:17 AM

I guess I'm not a very good Nana. :( My youngest daughter, 27, and her two little girls, 7 and 5, have lived with my DH and I since before the first little girl one was born. We have a very small house. For it to look clean, everything has to be in it's place. Of course, with kids, comes lots and lots and lots of toys, clothes, messes, and clutter. While they were living with us, I managed to turn a blind eye to all that, but now that they have their own place (it's been 2 months), I still haven't gotten used to the house just being me and my DH and, frankly, I love it. It's really nice to be alone after so long. My DH and I were married just a few months before my daughter moved back home pregnant with #1, so my DH and I have never really had time to live together, just the two of us and to be 'newlyweds'. My DD moved out to try and make it work with the dad, just long enough to get pregnant again, but it didn't work out so she moved back in again. I wasn't pleased with the outcome, but as a mother I had to help my daughter when she needed it for as long as she needed it. Finally, at 28 and with a profession as a hair stylist, she can be on her own.

So, as much as I love, love, love my g'kids, I also love having that alone time with my DH and the clean and uncluttered house that we have now. Not nearly the amount of cleaning, less laundry, less messes, less noise, less stress. Plus I have two bedrooms and a bathroom back. One room is my sewing room now and the other is a bedroom with bunkbeds for the g'kids when they spend the night.

I still watch the two girls two evenings a week when my daughter works late and most every weekend, so it's nice to see them occasionally, and then watch them go to their own place. I have to admit that I love having my house 'back' and enjoy time with my DH, and sewing, gardening and relaxing.

My oldest daughter and her husband have two beautiful children who also live nearby but they are settled, and don't 'rely' on us as much for help as my single-mom daughter has.

I'm a bad Nana. :o

tessagin 04-25-2013 06:26 AM

Yeah, gotta take care of the floor. you never know when you're going to step into some delayed time-release super glue. One thing I do not allow in my house is gum. I can't stand to look at people who chew gum. It looks like a cow chewing cud. Not cool! Not fun to step in either. Waste of money! OOPs started to ramble again.

Greenheron 04-25-2013 11:38 AM

LOL my 'grands' are coming for the weekend but they're two German Shepherd Dogs. I get all the usual grandkid mess plus hair. I also get kissed if my face gets too close and the pair tries to hang out in the kitchen because they know home cookin' rules. They also know how to obey, "OUT of my kitchen" Tummy-rubbing a 110 pounder is quite an experience. When they leave I ask their 'father' to tote all the furniture throws, dog pillows and area rugs to the washing machine.

mommafank 04-25-2013 12:39 PM

My DH can outshine the grands in the mess making contest. He is an outdoors kind of guy and in and out all day. And honestly, he always leaves crumbs every where in the kitchen, counter and at his place at the table. I just clean it up just glad he is still around. Once you hit 65 you just never know.

I always miss those children and grands so much after they leave, so picking up and wiping up keeps my mind off of it a while. My girls leave everything so neat and tidy when they leave there is not that much to do.

If I worked it would be a much bigger deal, so saying to all of you that you must retire at the earliest date possible. Many worry way too much about not having enough money but I say it is worth it to have your freedom to do what you want not what someone wants you to do.
