Hello everyone on this very chilly January day. I have started taking Prednisone again for the second time and I was wondering how it affects other people? It makes me really tired, really really tired all the time. And I have acid reflux so I have to take that about an hour or so before I take the prednisone. So.....what are your side affects.
OH, and I get really bad bad headaches while I am being weaned off of it too.
:? :? :? :? :?

I have been on Prednisone for almost a year now due to a autoimmune diease that I have. I have gained almost 40 lbs. Iam hungry all the time 20mins after I eat Iam ready again. Iam so thankful for a understanding husband. I dont know that I am tired all the time but i can say I am not overly ambitious. Sorry you have to take this yuck medication but hopefully it helps you and you can get off it soon.

candlequilter 01-24-2011 03:56 AM

I absolutely hate taking Prednisone it makes me so irritable that I can hardly stand myself let alone anyone else. I would say almost suicidal - but not quite thank God. Plus I gain weight big time from it even tho it is suppose to reduce swelling of glands, and etc.

I see that I am not the only one to gain weight from it.....I only took it for 15 days last time and I gained 10 pounds. My husband thinks I am lying, but no a woman never lies about the gaining of weight. :-)

Makes me cranky n super hungry! I'm already both of those! LOL. Throw in a splash of PMS and LOOK OUT. :)

ptquilts 01-24-2011 04:39 AM

DH took it and LOST weight, although his mom was on it and ate everything in sight. If you are going to be on it long term I think you need one of those meds to protect your bones, like Boniva. Talk to your doctor. Also, it will make your blood sugar go up.

thequiltmama 01-24-2011 04:53 AM

I am not too worried about the blood sugar because it seems like mine runs low anyway. I think ???
And only a man can lose weight on a med that makes you gain weight...men :-)

Hosta 01-24-2011 05:13 AM

I have been on and off Prednisone for two years even got steroid shots in my back I have gained 60 pounds my back is worse from the weight gain, It feels good while I am on them but as soon as they are done it hurts again

thequiltmama 01-24-2011 05:28 AM

That sucks.... I hope you find something that works better. Mine is for my "tarsal tunnel syndrome" in both feet.

Mean,mean,mean......

NancyArtCrafts 01-24-2011 07:20 AM

hunger and puffiness; sigh....good luck to you and hope you feel better

renee765 01-24-2011 07:26 AM

Boy, when I'm on Prednisone (for asthma) I cannot feel full. I can eat a whole plate full of food and still be hungry. I think it turns off my 'full' notice.

Shermy 01-24-2011 07:28 AM

I have Rhumotoid Arthritis and have been on Prednisone for approx. 5 years now.. I have gained 20 pounds and I'm always hungry. I have to take a short nap everyday or else I can't function.. I'm also on Remicade which helps stop the disease from progressing but is a very strong drug.. Hang in there, we all have something we have to deal with.

thequiltmama 01-24-2011 07:35 AM

I definitely agree, I have been very blessed in life and this is a minor hiccup :-)

thequiltmama 01-24-2011 08:05 AM

SERIOUSLY!!! I just ate a bagel and I am hungry again. ugh :-(

irishrose 01-24-2011 08:15 AM

I find that Pred weight doesn't leave when the script is finished. I agree with the tiredness, too.

thequiltmama 01-24-2011 08:18 AM

I agree with the weight thing, you just can't get rid of it after. That is part of the reason I was so reluctant to go back on, I definitely don't want to gain another 10 pounds that I can't lose. :-(

dpparris 01-24-2011 08:23 AM

My husband gets the munchies BAD, tries to eat me out of house and home. He was on it 2 weeks and gained 10 pounds.

laureneberhard 01-24-2011 09:26 AM

I also have a autoimmune muscle disease. I was also hungry all the time, but instead of being sleepy, I was wide awake almost all the time....only slept 2 to 3 hrs a day, but had no energy to do anything...talk about wasted time. I took the max of Pred for 5 years and another 2 to get off of it. If I were told I had to take it again, I'd have to think long and hard about it. Some days I felt like I was in another world. Why people take drugs they don't have to is a mystery to me. Hopefully you can get off that 'good' stuff very soon.

thequiltmama 01-24-2011 09:27 AM

2 weeks and I should be done Yah!!

MissM 01-24-2011 10:02 AM

It made me shake so bad I looked like I had a drug problem. I was also looking like I had a drug problem. ;-)

samifel 01-24-2011 10:05 AM

I have taken it a couple of times for a week at a time each for asthuma. It cleared my asthuma quickly and I had tons of energy...no real side effects

Sadiemae 01-24-2011 10:25 AM

I have never taken it, but my late husband had to take it at least once or twice a year. It really affected him badly. He said it felt like he was trying to crawl outside of his skin, and he was so jittery. He was also the most easy going person you would ever meet. Totally different story on prednisone. He acutally called a nurse a B.... and he would never, never, never have done this without the meds. The VA hospital finally had to let me help, and had to keep one nurse out of his room. I never knew how he would react to something with this drug.

Barbm 01-24-2011 10:27 AM

I'm allergic to it. Ended up with a head to toe rash, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. It was in the 90s in the summer, loved being ill.

mayday 01-24-2011 10:28 AM

weight gain/dripping sweats/insomnia but it is the only thing to relieve PMR pain/stiffness.

kat112000 01-24-2011 10:32 AM

Insomnia, not hungry at all, puffy face I was happy I was only on it for 5 days!!!

suebee 01-24-2011 10:33 AM

My husband was on it for a very short period of time several years ago. He hated it, said he made him very jittery, he was short-fused on it. Thank god he took himself off of it.
Hope you get some relief :)

madelinkk 01-24-2011 11:24 AM

After being told that I need both knees replaced, the dr also said that longterm steriod use is bad for your joints.

Tink's Mom 01-24-2011 11:45 AM

I end up on it every time I have a bad flare up of Fibromyalgia...I hate it! Hot flashes, insomnia, can't stop eating...and gaining weight.
BTW, the headaches come from going off the med. too fast.

QuiltnCowgirl 01-24-2011 11:56 AM

Rather than hitting "Quote Reply" to each & every reply may I just say, 'DITTO' to all of the above!

I had to do a few rounds of prednisone for acute sinus & bronchial inflamation that morphed into asthma. Hated the stuff. Thanks to it & the high-dose inhalers I am still trying to get rid of the 30lbs I packed on, have scars on my arms & face from breakouts that wouldn't heal, am finally feeling like I'm not host to a simbiant alien being, and 7 months later, I think I am on the road to recovery. Now if only I could lose the 30lbs as easily as I gained them...

MrsM 01-24-2011 12:27 PM

It made my daughter angry and mean when she was on it as a child.

thequiltmama 01-24-2011 12:31 PM

Oh, that is scary :-(

Darlene 01-24-2011 02:58 PM

Did any of you have terrible hand cramps or Charlie horses?

BRenea 01-24-2011 05:03 PM

I took prednisone after surgery and during chemo. For the most part it made me super perky (in an annoying way) and HYPER. I would stay up for days on end and then crash. Glad I'm off that stuff!

true4uca 01-24-2011 05:11 PM

My Sister were both on the same dosage. I was tired all the time, my get up & go got up & left (grin), gained maybe ten pounds. Didn't help my arthritis at all. Helped my sister somewhat, she gained 85lbs.Not all meds help everyone.

irishrose 01-24-2011 09:36 PM

I forgot about the insomnia. I am a good sleeper, but not when I was on pred. The last time a doctor wanted me to take it, I walked out of his office.
