How to finish the hem of the romper after attaching snap buttons

Hi,
This is the first time I am sewing a romper and I am stuck at the point where you attach the snap buttons. I have done the buttons at the crotch area but I cannot finish the lower edge afterwards. Do I fold it twice and do it like normal hem? I need to add elastic also for the legs? how do I do all that together?what do I attach first? the snap tape or the elastic?when do I do the hem? I referred a lot of free tutorials but I still don't get it.....:(

I would put the snap tape on first. Fold up the hem and make sure you fold in the edge so you are sewing on the folded edge to enclose the raw edge. Thread the elastic thru and stitch into the end openings to sew them shut. The snap should be just above the hem a little bit. I got so tired of snapping all those little snaps with the legs going a mile a minute, that I put velcro in one time. Guess it worked as well as the snaps. They all come open sometimes. What are you making the romper out of? If it's heavier, like corduroy then you will need a wider elastic to compensate for the heavy fabric being bunch up. Good luck.

That was a very helpful answer indeed! Thank You! Its very clear now. I thought I would start with a light-weight cotton fabric first. About the velcro, I was also thinking of using it, but feared it would poke the child or even come off...
Thank you once again.

I was more worried about her sticking to the carpet! :)

Make the hem first, then attach the tape.

I spoke with my friend recently and asked her about the velcro. She said it worked great. She liked it better than snaps and she never had to pull her kids off the carpet.hehe The older girl was very particular about her clothes and wouldn't wear anything that bothered her, tags, seams... The velcro never bothered her.

If you put the snap tape on first, then it gets hemmed right along with the hem of the pants and its one less layer of fabric for the needle to go thru.
