this isn't what did ON the vacation, it's what happened at the end.

whenever i fly anyplace i always see someone who flies from somewhere warm to somewhere cold. he's still wearing sandals, shorts and some hawaiin shirt without a jacket.

so, i'm thinking 'hey, i walk around in the middle of the night, with the heat all the way down, on the cold tile floors. how hard is it to go from the warm airport lobby in sandals, out to a cab three steps away, right?' wrong, of course.

we get our luggage off the carousel and call our reliable cab company, in our town, to come and get us. they say no way. they're not going out at all.

okay, cool. out on the sidewalk there's a booth for an airport fleet cab driver operator. we go outside and the wind is picking up. it's around 12:a.m. there's a line of people waiting for a cab and we're last in line and the snow is getting harder. the cabs are coming in for pickups at a very slow rate because of the icing conditions. the dispatch operator sends us all inside the lobby door to
wait. we're waiting, waiting, waiting. everyone has taken their turn and there's no cab for us. we are deciding to sleep in the airport and deal with this in the a.m. i take a last peek outside and lo! and behold! a cab!

he agrees to take us home for the airport fleet rate and off we go. the snow is piling up. we drive at the speed of snails, with the guy stopping every mile to scrape ice off the wipers using a screwdriver. halfway home, he asks if he can make a stop at the next rest room. so, creep, scrape, creep, scrape, and so on.

finally we get home to our house. the plow has been down the street and the snow is piled up to my waist. i can't climb over it, because it keeps giving way, so i'm tumbling into it, giggling like an overtired fool. i push my way through and start high-stepping over the lawn toward the front door. my feet are frozen and halfway to the door i realize that between the cab and the house i lost my sandal. now, there's no holding me back. i am hysterical laughing. the sandal is white. i know i won't see it again until spring comes. my feet are so cold i expect to have my toes amputated.

by the time we paid off the cab, with a healthy tip for taking his life in his hands, it was after 3 a.m. it should have been a 1/2 hour drive. i'm still tired.

that's how we ended our vacation. we should have stayed there.

charmpacksplus 12-24-2009 08:01 PM

Okay, I had to laugh out loud when you said your sandal was white! Oh, I am so glad we don't have to deal with snow down here in Louisiana. A lot of rain, but not much of the white stuff.

sharon b 12-24-2009 08:14 PM

See Butterfly, that is why you don't wear white after Memorial day  LOL Sorry just had to say ot ... it seemed so fitting

amma 12-24-2009 08:17 PM

Lisanne 12-24-2009 08:44 PM

Welcome back, and glad you made it home safely even if you did lose your sandal. Considering where you live, you'll probably find it by tomorrow. I imagine the snow will melt right away.

So when may we expect vacation pictures and a full account of how it was?

nursie76 12-24-2009 08:57 PM

That's very, very good. I mean, what would you do if you had a full set of toes but not a full set of feet????

She wouldn't buy any sandals, that's for sure....unless she planned to walk on her hands!
B, me and hubby are sitting here in our Florida home and I am barefooted, so of course we can laugh. What an adventure for you and hubby and the cabbie!
I'm so glad you agreed to let the poor man stop and pee:lol:

Butterflywing, Didn't you go to the Dominican for your vacation? My husband and I are considering going there before spring 2010. Please post your pictures and let us all know how you liked/didn't like it. I've been waiting for you to get home so I could ask. Hope it was fabulous! Hope you'll give us lots of good advice!

i loved it and i wish we could have stayed forever. i don't know about the other resorts, but we were at Lifestyle Haciendas, which also has condos, villas, suites, etc., as well as the hotel part. they try to sell you up, but you can firmly say no, and then they don't try again.

Mousie 12-26-2009 07:20 PM

I am just so curious, B?
Ok, so you were in this lovely, sunny place...but there was snow at home...what possessed you to stay in sandals, LoL?

mjsylvstr 12-27-2009 06:15 PM

butterfly wing.....

from MJ in NJ

We, at the coast here in Jersey, got more than usual and the most in a very long time..of that white stuff......We were able to get out of Jersey on the eve morning...but were bumper to bumper from Arlington, VA to Richmond......
it was terrible.

Christmas day, left Rocky Mount, NC at 7AM...going great until the rains started....so hard that we had to use the flashers so the cars in the rear could see us......
was that way for a good hour through SC..
conditions were good for about 10 miles into GA.........
and then the rains decided to come down there also.....
same conditions there as in SC.

We arrived safely at our Florida destination just in time for our DIL's dinner at 6PM

Will be keeping in touch from Florida for the next few months......

Happy New Year everyone..........MaryJane

JoanneS 12-27-2009 11:06 PM

BF - you made my day with your sandals and your high stepping across the lawn. If it had been me, I would have also peed my pants! I haven't had a close encounter with snow (except that brief freaky one in October)for a long, long time.

Gals - should we take up a collection to buy Barbara a 'proper' pair of shoes for New Jersey in December? Maybe not, though, because she does keep us supplied with laughter.

amma 12-27-2009 11:10 PM

I am still chuckling over this... I can just see me making the same decision..same outcome LMBO

littlehud 12-28-2009 02:35 PM
