How to line a round basket?
 

I have a large, round basket that I would like to make a lining for. Anyone know of a good tutorial or some general guidelines for doing this? Thanks!

i've lined quite a few baskets over the years. for fun, for little pincushions, etc. using a piece of heavy cardboard you can also make a lid. baskets are fun & i love playing with them. to line a basket, make a base pattern piece to mimic the shape & size of the base of your basket. to make a lining measure circumference & depth. stitch into a tube. stitch to bottom piece, right sides together. hand whip stitch to top of basket rim. you can glue decorative cording on top of that, or silk flowers ...lots of ways to add pretty accents or fun bling. i don't have or use a hot glue gun, don't like the appearance i've seen in other peoples craft projects. i use heavy thread, light weight craft wire, craft glues etc & other than sewing the fabric lining on machine, all work done by hand. it's easy, relaxing & so much fun!! be sure & post pics of finished project!

I love this basket! I found it at a thrift shop. My intention is to use it as a decorative accent to hold towels in the bathroom that we just remodeled. I got a splinter while messing around with it and thought a lining might help avoid that.

Lovely basket. I think it would be like making a ball inside-out, except elongated. Balls are done with long strips
wider in the middle and narrow at the top and bottom.

I know a couple people who line their baskets but instead of stitching or hot gluing to the basket, they made removable liners with elastic for easy cleanup. They only use plastic bags for what little trash they have. Their liners coordinate with the interior of the baskets.

If you want a semi-fitted liner and have a bit of difficulty seeing it, turn the basket over and use the outside as a basic pattern. By draping your fabric over it, you will see how it needs to fold, bend, drape. This might help you see the tube and flooring you will need to measure. Reminder, the inside is an inch or so smaller, so think about that and you can adjust the seam allowance to compensate for that.

Think I would turn the basket upside down and make a pattern with seam allowance. Then, measure from the top to the bottom of the basket with seam allowance. Seam the inside fabric to make a tube. Then, pin the bottom to the to the side piece ( the tube). Stitch carefully until you have stitched all around. Try it all around for size and then resew again for strength. You may need to glue the top. It is a beautiful basket and would look great as a towel holder. Shoot us a picture when you have finished.
