How much to tip at airport?
 

Flying next week and finally admitted that I need help getting myself and my suitcases from the terminal entrance to my departure gate so I've arranged to be escorted by wheelchair. IMy cousin flys a lot she uses the wheel chair tips $2 which I think it much too little. Thinking at least $5 but think I'll probably tip $10. What do you think?

I really wanted a golf cart ride but when I spoke to gal at airline (Yes, I called and actually spoke to a real person) she said the golf cart stop was too far from the entrance and she didn't want me walking all that way.

I generally tip $2 for the golf cart ride. $5 for the wheelchair ride because they usually have to do some pushing. All depends on what airport you are at too. Atlanta, Ga was a little higher than Denver or NY.

If I had it, i'd go ten. And give it to them before you start. That way they see to you.

I agree with barny - it will be $10 bucks well spent.

oh shoot i didn't tip the guy who helped me take my SIL to the gate years ago. i was so shocked that neither my husband nor his sister would to to the gate with their own sister, so i stepped up and went with her. she was very ill and going home in a wheel chair and couldn't even talk. oh well, next time i'll tip!

nativetexan, You were in a situation like I've been went answering the door to find a deliveryman with a bunch of flowers for me that someone sent to me as a gift. Didn't have any money in my pockets and they were gone before I could tell them to wait a minute.

Thanks for the tips. Good idea to tip the wheelchair person up front, think I'll go for $10 as this is a big metro airport where everything is m ore expensive.

Yep - I would do $10 if you can and definitely give it up front. You'll get the royal treatment.

A Little tidbit on your tipping delima. I'm a retired florist; my husband still works part time delivering flowers. Tips are very rare. Most floral delivery people do not expect a tip as they are usually paid by the hour or delivery. Also flowers are a gift. Sender pays delivery fee, occassionally will leave a tip for driver. Tips are always appreciated never required, whether they come from sender or reciepent. If you ask the driver to please wait, they will, unless their company has a no tip policy.

I traveled with a friend who needed a wheelchair and she tipped him when he brought her the chair.I believe it was at least $5. and again when he departed from her. He was unbelievable and so attentive to her every need. In fact he took her paperwork and also the paperwork for one other traveler and myself, we didn't have to do a thing.
I guess the old saying, "you get what you pay for" sure was true for her.

We do the same thing when we valet park......tip when leaving the car and again when picking it up......helps there also.

When you make your arrangements for tickets, tell them you need a wheelchair
and the tip should be what ever you want to do. My DD always ask for a
wheelchair for me when we fly. It has come in handy when you need to get
to another site and don't know the airport. Have a good trip.

All good advice, thanks. Wheelchair arrangements were made when we booked our flight, wheelchair will also be available for me when we arrive in Las Vegas, and the same for the trip home. I'm going to my $10 ready for each leg of our trip.

Contintenial has a site for senior travelers, and get this, DH actually spoke to a person! When DH told the woman that with my arthritis I needed a little more legroom she upgraded us, without charge, to the front of the ecomony section that has a little more space between the rows and seats.

Found out info for future trips. We could buy an economy seat and use some of our frequent flier miles to upgrade to business or first class. Couldn't do that this trip as we needed to leave on a certain day and flights we could use had that type of upgrade blocked out. I think we can do it when we aren't restricted by a time table and fly on a day of the week that isn't busy. I really would like to fly first class at least once.

We did go first class one time when the cost of the trip wasn't much more over economy fare. That was a few years ago when we took the train from Amsterdam to Paris. It was lovely, great food, everyone was so attentive and the seats were wide and comfy. May

Have to say the $10 I tipped each of the wheelchair attendants was well worth it. In Jersey I was met at the terminal's front door with a wheelchair, brought to the front of the check in line (DH too), attendant put my carryon bag and other stuff on conveyer belt and even took my shoes off! As soon as I stepped off the plane in Vegas there was a wheelchair and attendant waiting for me. I thought the Jersey terminal was big but the Vegas one was huge and there was no way I could have walked through it pulling my carryon bag, while toting my big purse and using my cane. Same great service as in Jersey, attendant even picked up the large suitcase we had checked. Continued great service on our trip back to Jersey. In fact, DH arranged for wheelchairs for himself for the trip back home. May in Jersey
