Serviced meaning general cleaning, oiling and what ever else they do.

Maybe a better question would be 'how often should we be getting our sewing machine/machines sent in for the general maintance overhaul?

I know that many of us oil and clean the best we can our machines, but is there a general rule about sewing machine care by professionals?

I don't know if there is any written rule but I have mine serviced once a year.

Mine is supposed to be once a year. It was due in March. I don't like the guy at my LQS very well. The shop is closing and I was going to take it in but another shop the next town over is going to take over as the Bernina Shop and her DH is going to Bernina Repair University. So I will take it in September to let him clean it. The computerized machine want to be seen annually, it even tells me!!

My Viking Rose has never been in for service. I keep it clean & it does not need oiling.

I tell my customers and Bernina recommends once a year. Most Bernina's have an idler wheel that requires oiling or eventually the machine can become damaged. I think some people who use machines very often need to bring them in more often.....and the occasional sewer can push the servicing off just a bit. As long as your dealer is honest the regular servicing should not be too expensive.

I have only mechanical machines, some vintage, some older, one newer, and as long as they sew okay I don't take them in. I do keep them clean though.

Mine are serviced when I have a problem. It is expensive here - $100.00 for general service.

Ramona Byrd 07-26-2011 06:52 PM

Oh, you're SUPPOSED to take them in for servicing?

I only have a couple of older ones, and I clean them now and then...whenever I think about it.

I never do...???

Gramie bj 07-26-2011 08:54 PM

Only take them in if I'm having a problem, that cleaning and oiling won't fix. Except when I get a used one that I know will be full of old dirt and has been stored in someones basement, barn, attic, the odd out building, ect.
