How well do you discern shapes?
Because I often have people tell me that they can't believe I "could see that," I have realized over the years that not everyone finds the differences in shapes as easy to "see" as I seem to. Today I found a test that helps you determine your ability to discern the vague differences in shapes. This could be a great resource for quilters and instructors. You might enjoy trying it!

Thanks, Jan. I scored better than 4%. I also took the color test and did well on that too. I guess quilting comes in handy.

Hi Jan, I got 96% right. I was a little worried since I'm on my cell phone that I wouldn't be able to see the shape clearly.
Thank you Jan. |
Thanks Jan! I'm glad I can join the ranks of the 4%... ;)
|
Top 4% for me.
|
That was fun! I'm in the top 4% as well! Yay!
|
Quilters are good! I also am in the top 4%.
|
Top 4% for me too. I think it's because my Dad was a Machinist and I did so well in Drafting class. I seem to do a lot better when math and a structured set of patterns is involved.
|
I wonder with these sorts of 'tests' just how true the results are?
I scored in the top too. Or maybe because quilters work with patterns in fabric and patterns, we have a natural aptitude. |
hmmm... I was in the top 4% also. Maybe everyone is? Or maybe we're all special. :)
|
Do you think that as quilters we are automatically part of the top 4%.?

#5 does not have a correct answer... the missing area has 4 missing lines and the choices are 3 or 5 lines. This test does not have anything to do with intelligence as stated at the beginning... it has to do with logic and perception.
|
Yep, I saw this on facebook a couple of weeks ago. I'm pretty sure I got them all correct except one that didn't seem to have a correct answer. Everyone there was scoring well also. We decided the test was an ego booster. :) One thing I don't like about all of these "tests" that go around on facebook is that they do not tell you which questions you missed. (Especially things like grammar.) Therefore, I wonder at their scoring...just sayin'...

I scored 96%.
|
Interesting test. I am nearly blind in one eye and I got a 96% even though the last few pictures were hard to get on my laptop. I am excellent at color, probably better than picking designs.
|
I am really disappointed! I took the test and also came up top 4%. So my inquiring mind took it again and of course entered a lot of wrong answers....guess what....I again came up in the top 4%. hummmm!!!!????

I got the top 4% also.

Top 4% for me also.

I too went back to see if there was a score lower. Worked hard to pick wrong answers scored 60 on 2nd round vs 96 first time. Think it might have something to do with quilters paying attention to detail. Interesting, B neg blood is only 4 percent of population.
|
I got 96% correct, in th top 4%
I'm great at special skills, something men excel at, and very few woman. I love those types of puzzles. bring on some more. thanks for sharing with all of us. |
I think we all scored so high because we are quilters. we pay attention to a lot of things others don't. we're just smarter than the rest of the population. we know the names of shapes past a square, others don't. we see color and shapes others don't also. We can visualize a quilt block, with color, when others can't see the design.

Something is wrong with the link for me. It takes me to buzz-hearts, then says it can't be found.

I'm in the top 4%.
|
Well, it seems the test got us all thinking -- whether that was negative thinking or not. Just our interest in taking it shows us something about ourselves. :)

I scored in the top 4% also and did well with the colors. They also have another test with faded numbers toward the end and ask how many or what the last number is that you see. just let's us know how well we do/don't see.

I took the test, but it didn't tell me how many I got right. It took me to a new test with 120 questions which I am not willing to spend that much time on.

I sometimes have difficulty because of the colors - color blindness makes some similarly colored pieced shapes blend into each other. When I look at patterns in magazines, then look at the fabric descriptions and how much of each is needed, I frequently say, "There's no 'color X' in that quilt!"
Then I study the picture of the quilt and see the difference in the pattern of the fabric, but I really don't see the color that was mentioned in the directions. If the colors of the fabrics are bright or high contrast, then I don't have a problem discerning shapes. Needless to say, the quilts I make use bright , high contrast fabrics. I learned learned that I can only use 4 - 5 different fabrics in a quilt without getting overwhelmed. While I can't be sure, I think my Mother had the same problem. I base that on some of her UFOs. When I tried to complete a couple of them, I got lost when I tried to piece them. Having said that, the test said I'm in the top 4%, probably because quilting has forced me to be more particular when determining shapes! I have noticed a definite improvement from pre-quilting days! |
Some people are just good at pattern detection. I am not, and never have been. I worked in IT and those silly pattern tests kept me from getting a few jobs. However, it turned out I was very good at systems analysis because of my logic abilities.
Happily, that surprised even me! |
I also was 96%. Was in the 4%.

Me, too!! I'm thinking that Quilter's possibly do better because we are used to seeing patterns where others cannot - although sometimes we just have to'tilt our head to one side or the other to see them! Very interesting test - thought I had messed up in a couple.
