we've probably all heard by now today is Elvis's birthday.
An interesting question I heard on the radio: How do you think Elvis would fare musically today. My feelings are music sure has changed alot since then but he did cross many fields like country, ballad, religious, rock. I just don't think the younger set, the "buyers" would gravitate to him as much as others.
Anxious to hear other opinions!

I never did think that Elvis' voice was all that hot, but he had charisma to no end.
Charisma is usually what makes or breaks a singer... I think Elvis would have done just fine in this day and age...

I think that he would have elvolved with the music trends...:wink:

I think he'd still have the same following he did in the day along with a few younguns. He would still be oozing velvety sensuality.

I think he knew how to play to the press and the public so I think he would still be great.

I believe Elvis would still be king, if he had gotten his weight issues resolved. He still played to the audience.
There are so many singers now who have the "Elvis sound" and are bringing in the crowds.

Tony Bennett has. Why not?

Elvis was and will always be the king! And if he was here with us still, we would be going Micheal who?

I'm listening to Elvis right now. Just sitting here all by myself listening and I have cold chills!!!!!
His voice is soooooo s-e-x-y.
But, what I'm really thinking about as I listen, is Lisa Marie. She didn't even get to know him. That hurts my heart.
Growing up, my father was an acoholic. As he grew older, he stopped drinking. I didn't like him when I was young. But, I had a father.
She didn't get to know the "King".
To end on a happy note... My father will be 95 years young on Feb. 4th and I might add he is very healthy. Starting to get a little dementia. Doing very good.
I love him dearly and could not imagine not ever knowing him.

You know, I was thinking this same thing last month when we hit 29 years for John Lennons murder....what would he have become?? He had just begun to find himself emotionally again, was confidant, and started recording again...and as a political force, he had such ideas....John Lennon, elder statesman....

Elvis i loved him when i was about 15..i wish i could travel back in time and go to one of his concerts when he was young!I have a lot of his records and if he was around today i would hope he was like Tony Bennet..he is such a happy guy and loves what he does, we could all learn from him..and such a gentleman and there arent too many true gentlemen around today ...

If you listen to a broad range of his music...and he sure had one...he really did have a good voice.
I think he was one sexy, handsome, charismatic charmer, but after a while, he was a lousy husband.
If he had not gone the way of drugs etc. and gotten a handle on his weight, I think he could have gone on to do the types of movies he really wanted to do.
I think he would have definitely evolved with the times and would most certainly still have a following. There are so many entertainers out there, I am not sure he would be as big as he has been since death.
Whatever he was or wasn't, no one will ever really recreate him, he was truly, one of a kind.

I agree it is very sad for a daughter to grow up not knowing her father. I don't know when Lisa Marie's birthday is, but I bet she thinks of him.
Actually, I bet she thinks of him everyday of her life.

I loved Elvis growing up as a teen and I still love him to this day. I also agree about Lisa Marie not knowing her father is terrible, but I did not have a father growing up, in fact I didn't even have a mother. My grandmother had to be mother and father to me. While I wish I could have had a "normal" childhood with both a mother and father, but I'm so thankful for my dear grandmother who did everything in her power to raise and care for me. She has gone on to be with the Lord, but I can still hear her voice and see her face today. Let us all say a prayer for all the children today that are growing up without a father and sometimes a mother also. I can speak from experience that it's a pain that never goes away.

I watched Blue Hawaii last night and it was great as always......happy birthday Elvis! I still love to hear him sing gospel music.....

Ok, you girls asked for it---Elvis would still be the king today--he would transition with the times to a certain degree just like he did back then. His voice was amazing--his range was phenonimal. He was gorgeous with eyes that sparkled and a smile that still melts my heart. I also think he would & should have been an actor. He was doggone good at it. I am talking about movies like Jailhouse Rock, King Creole and Charro. Honestly, 3 things destroyed him---His mama's death was the beginning---then he actually got into drugs in the army--they gave them to the guys on duty, and third was the fact that since his mama, he never had anyone who would stand up to him about the drugs & Dr. Nick just did what he asked, as well as the other docs he saw. If she had lived, I think he would still be with us today. Can you guess I am an avid fan? I miss him terribly but he is with his mama now and that gives me some comfort. I know it was not easy for Lisa Marie because I lost my dad at the same age, but I am sure that her family and his friends have given her the insight of knowing her father. Mine did.

I did make an Elvis Quilt for a friend of mine...who is a Big Elvis fan! I enjoyed making it for her..it was a surprise..and boy was she tickled with it!

I remember hearing Elvis for the first time when I was in high school. The song was "Don't be cruel" and I was mesmerized by this voice coming over the radio. I looked at my mom who was as awestruck as I. We lived in the Louisiana Bayous and we really couldn't determine if Elvis was white or black. It did not matter. Oh, he had a "one in a million" voice that all the vocal training in the world does not give one. I skipped school the day Elvis was filming "King Creole" in the French Quarter in New Orleans, hoping to catch a glimpse. I also attended several of his concerts. My mother continued as his life-long fan. When she died, my sister and I placed the Elvis postal stamps in her coffin. I, too, believe he would have evolved in his music much as an earlier poster wrote. Yesterday, I played his music and watched some of those god-awful movies of his and prayed that his soul is at peace. Thanks for allowing me a trip down memory lane.

I don't really know how he would do today. I can tell you that (having lived in and around Memphis for the last 30+yrs.) that on his birthday and his death anniversary...it is just crazy crowded around his estate!

Yesterday there was a huge crowd from all over the world standing outside for hours in 18-19 degree weather to see and hear Priscilla, Lisa Marie and her 2 kids (teenage grandkids of Elvis's). I personally think they are nuts, but to each his own.

Elvis had done more for the city of Memphis in his death than he ever would have if he were still alive today. But...who's to say what would have happened? You can't rewrite history and you can't predict the future....so...its just an interesting premise. :lol:

I went to two of his concerts -one of which I sat on the front row. I have a scarf from that concert. When he handed it to me, we were the only two people in the building (or so it seemed). I believe that he would still be holding his own.

I'm with Madquilter on this. He would still be a challenge to anyone.
