Anyone out there involved in the sport of hunting and/or fishing?

ruacajun2 11-03-2010 10:04 AM

I just came back from a fishing trip. Came home with 80 pounds of filet catfish.

pheasantduster 11-03-2010 10:09 AM

My husband does the hunting and fishing. Right now hunting season - lots of deer in area but because of all the new houses - hunting more restricted. Towns in and around area concerned about Lyme Disease - A real concern

ruacajun2 11-03-2010 10:15 AM

Are they trying to get rid of the Deer?

pheasantduster 11-03-2010 10:25 AM

There is a special bow & arrow hunt in the next town (Dover) - but only in restricted areas and you know the deer won't travel there! Other towns in area don't allow shotguns so now they are seeing the herds get too big. My husband has been enjoying these activities since he was a teenager but in our beautiful area as the old song goes - They paved Paradise an put in a parking lot. We eat the venison and enjoy it. He is able to go saltwater fishing in summer with friend.
Best fish is the fresh fish - Don't really buy fish in store.

luvTooQuilt 11-03-2010 10:33 AM

My hubby hunts on our property- deer, turkey.. We had fresh turkey and it was awesome.. I don't care for the venison at all- that's his thing... We also have a creek running thru our property that we ended up creating a swimming hole, but no fishing, not deep enough for fish.. We will take our boat to a local fishing area from time to time..

pheasantduster 11-03-2010 10:41 AM

luvTooQuilt -my husband butchers his own deer so we know what cuts we have. We just pan fry the sirloin steaks in cast iron pan. The tenderloin is eaten right away - fresh as can be and delicious. A lot of hamburg is made and used in speghetti sauce throughout the year. Of course, you need a freezer and ours in one that you have to defrost. The self-defrosting takes out all the moisture of a product as I am sure you know. rucacajun2 - how do you freeze your fish?

ruacajun2 11-03-2010 10:49 AM

I freeze them in ziploc bags with water. My boyfriend also hunts deer - He's travelled to Colorado several times in the last couple of years. Always comes back with the story of I had a big one but it got away. He and his siblings also butcher their own deer and make smoked sausage, patties for burgers, and of course the backstrap is mine to cook my way. Which is sliced real thin and dipped into an egg batter and flour and fried. And of course can not leave out the Pioneer White Gravy. When we cook this it's like no one gets enough. Always wanting more. We salt water fish too. But have had more luck in fresh water. I haven't ventured off on one of those deep water fishing trips just yet. We have a camper and a pontoon boat and we love to travel when kids are out of school and activities. Everyone loves to camp, fish and hunt in my family. Even the Cat, Star, and the three pooches, Lily (pug) Shianne and Pooh (poodles) join us on all of our trips. It's nice to take and WHOLE family on trips.

The deer are never in the restricted areas of hunting. We camp at a lot of State Parks in Texas and see lots and lots of deer. They are a beautiful animal. Sometimes when the herds get too big though I think they will let people come in and thin it out or they try to catch them and move them to other places.

I love the wilderness. I could live in a log cabin house in the mountains. As long as I have all the food I need, firewood for fires and all the fabrics I can imagine having in a stash along with a gammill longarm and my sewing room set up with any other goodies that belong in one's room. When I dream I dream big, real big.

My DH hunts elk & deer on our ranch. We keep very little of the meat - give most of it away. We will keep the backstraps and make some into jerky & summer sausage. We have a couple of bass ponds on our ranch and the Yellowstone River runs through our place so he does a lot of fishing. We ship our cattle the 1st of October, so we open the ranch up for anyone who wants to hunt. No cattle are on the place until hunting season is almost over.

ruacajun2 - Want you to know that I grew up in the city (Boston, MA) but when I married my husband and we bought his childhood home from his parents as they then wanted to sell and moved up the street in the 'old farmhouse' with uncle. It was so country-like here in 1966. Never regretted leaving the city, never looked back. Now it is so built up but we have 2.5 acres we keep rather natural. No 'lawn drs' cutting our grass! Turkeys come through regularly and I feed the birds so see lots of different ones during the seasons. Even have had hummingbirds during the summer. My husband has always had a garden so we enjoy the harvest and we have always kept a few chickens for eggs. Mother Nature knows what she is doing! and you and I appreciate her.

I surely do appreciate Mother Nature. My grandparents had a farm. Loved picking eggs, feeding the chickens and pigs and cows and sheep. We butchered our own chickens and pigs. Cows were sent to the slaughter house. My father is a farmer. We did not live on a farm - his stuff was away from our house. He plants rice, soybean, sugar cane and has crawfish ponds that he sells to restaurants and to the public.

But my grandmother was just down the road and we would get on our bikes and visit her as much as we could. We also had horses. Love and miss the trail rides.

Now that I am grown and gone - lived in the country in Louisiana and now live in the city just outside of Houston for the last 21 years -- I so miss the country. I keep saying that I will find land and move and get back to all the fun stuff but my job keeps me in tack of reality and that I do need this job to pay my bills and raise my last two kids. But one day -- I will go back to the peace of the country life. Soon I hope.

Well, I sure would love to visit your way. I have always wanted to check out Montana and Wyoming area. So when you say you open the ranch up for anyone who wants to hunt, is this for locals only?

Definitely for anyone, not just locals. Actually in the last week we have had people from New Mexico, Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin out hunting. So come on up - we could get some quilting & sightseeing in!

I'm not sure, I have never asked. I think they are a bit pricey. I can ask DH when he comes home, I'm sure he would have a ball park figure.

ruacajun2 11-03-2010 01:01 PM

Thanks -- interesting!!! Yes I would love to go siteseeing and quilttttttttt!

redkimba 11-03-2010 01:15 PM

I like deer hunting, but haven't gone in the last couple of years. I'm hoping to do it this year.

oldhag 11-03-2010 01:23 PM

We don't hunt but I sure do like getting a feed or two of moose here. Much tastier than deer. We generally fish in the winter. Love to go ice fishing. The walleye are so much tastier in the winter.

CarrieAnne 11-03-2010 01:29 PM

Both of my boys deer hunt here on the property. The season is extra long here now, due to CWD.........so sad, you dont see as many deer now!

Sadiemae 11-03-2010 01:36 PM

My late husband, and my brothers, and sister used to go hunting. I worked full time back then, so I didn't go. I miss having the deer and elk meat for the winter time. It was a fun time, but I didn't really like cutting the meat. Brings back memories.

annyroony2 11-03-2010 02:23 PM

My DH and sons have been deer hunting this week. One son got a 9 point, DH got a 7 point and other son got a nap in the tree stand (LOL). So needless to say I am grounded from October until January, then I get to travel again and search for fabrics. I don't deer hunt, but I do like to fish.

NauDeeGal 11-03-2010 02:39 PM

I used to bow hunt for whitetail deer years ago. I do miss having the venison in the freezer. My fiance and I are avid fishers. We fish for walleye, perch and salmon. My screen name is a combination of nautical and DeeDee, nickname I go by. We love the Great Lakes and all they have to offer. We have 2 boats. A 26' cuddy walk around and a 14' aluminum fishing boat, so that we can get out on almost any water here in Michigan except the frozen kind. I would love to try ice fishing but honey gets cold too easy and I won't try it alone. I have always heard the walleye are tastier in Montana and Minnesota and Canada. One day hopefully we will try a trip to one of these areas.

DH said that the hunters from Wisconsin paid around $350 for an out of state deer license and he heard that they will be going up next year. Ouch! My brother comes from out of state, but he doesn't shoot anything. My DH buys a tag and they go together. When my DH shoots something, they clean it out together, haul it out together and my brother takes the meat. Win-win for everyone!

pheasantduster 12-02-2010 09:08 AM

Yea, husband came home with 1st deer of the season. A spike horn - made his day! After he does his butchering I'll be busy wrapping and freezing. again, Yea

Hey,you should see what i get in my front yard all year long.

amandasgramma 12-02-2010 12:05 PM

We go fishing every May with a gaggle of friends (no other word for it!) We go to the upper corner of Oregon, on the border of Idaho. It's a blast!!!! We usually catch crappie and catfish.....once in a while a bass. But the bass are illegal to keep at that time.

We freeze our fish. First -- GOOD cleaning, then wrap in seran wrap, then used the FoodSaver. Took some fish out the other day that had been in there for 3 yrs --- it was still excellent!!! :)
