Hurricane Sandy and Long Island
 

DH works with FEMA and is down in Hauppaughe, Long Island. He left here a week ago when the temps. were warm but now he's freezing down there with no way to get a warm coat. By the time he gets off work, 12 hour days, he's exhausted. Hopefully he will get a day off soon and can hit a WalMart or Goodwill. Last night it took them 5 hours to travel 30 miles in the now.

God bless those who help, whether paid or not! It takes a lot of caring to do what your husband is doing!

How wonderful for him to do this. I sure hope he can get a coat soon!

Sometimes FEMA gets a bad rap so thank your husband for his service to those in need!!

Last night when I heard the news report of the snow they were getting on Long Island I got very stressed. So many people are literally homeless or staying in homes with no electric or utilities. So many lost everything. And all the rescue people who came from all over the country. So many aren't even used to snow at all. They went after the storm hit and didn't expect that amount of snow or the low temps. I guess what I am saying is if you can do anything to help then do it. If you can't and you believe in God then please pray for all who are effected by Sandy and now this early snow accumulation. Thank you.

I am praying for your husband and the rest of the amazing volunteers that are in NY & NJ helping the victims. I have a sister that lives in Hoboken, NJ so I know first hand about the devastation the people there are facing. My sister is fortunate because where she lives wasn't affected as bad as many of the other areas. Please thank your husband for the service that he is generously giving.

The good news is that it's supposed to warm up a little tomorrow. Tell your husband that we are all very grateful for FEMA here in NY. Their hard work has not gone unnoticed. I'm in Brooklyn, and FEMA was at my house yesterday.

Roberta email me his size I'll go get him one. I live in the next town. I got gas (yeah) so that's good and my power came on last night. Can't have him cold or sick he's helping is which I thank from the bottom of my heart!

God be with all thoughs that have left home to help others. Thank to them and their families. God continue to be with them in the affected area.

Let us know if he's able to get a coat and stay warm. Linynp, bless you for helping. Our church has a team of first responders who go to distressed areas, and they are there helping. FEMA gets a bad rap, but that's what makes the news. It would be nice if the reporters would find someone who was helped and put that on the news. Also, how about the FEMA workers point of view? That has to be one tough job.

Well you the news is always about something bad or what bad is going on in the world. Just once would I love to watch news and see something positive, good or people happy. I don't watch the news ever because its so depressing.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your husband and all the others who are helping. We rec's a list of things needed, from our church conf. today and will start filling the list this Sunday. Sorry it will take another week for us to get it to the people who need it most. Coats and blankets are top on the list.

Tell him great job for our family!! My sister lives in Long Island. She has power now, they roughed out the outage but came through. Hope he gets some warmth soon!!

When I read the post my heart was going out to this man and I thought "if only I could help" but I'm just tooooooooo far away!!!!! I personally didn't have a need to contact FEMA, but they have helped a couple of my staff, and have been very helpful. It is amazing to see all that have been helping . We appreciate all that we have gotten.

Oh, he couldn't accept that. What a huge heart you have to offer and I do worry about him getting sick down there. He's not a spring chicken anymore, 72 years old, but I don't think he will ever give up working with FEMA. He loves being of service to others and he knows how difficult life is in those conditions.

Roberta, this message touched me so much and I hope your DH accepts this gift of love, that I used it in my Sunday message today in relation to tithes and offerings (Matt. 23:34-40) Please tell hubby to take care of himself!!! Blessings to you both and to the lady who wants to get him a coat!!!

roberta, say yes, and let the lady buy your husband a coat. i wouldn't want my 70 yr old husband getting cold.
i wish i knew what i could do to help. have not heard of any collections around jackson or lansing michigan.

I just said to my husband, 'what could one 65 yr old lady do to help?" i have been reading links, which generated from another link on this site. and it said that if you organize a 'truckload donation' etc. to be sure and cordinate with local volunteer organizations in the effected area. etc. another link mentioned charcoal, and grills, diapers, pet food. still putting a lot of thought into it. looking for ideas, for me to help. i see mormans are sending in tons of young people to just clean. they are the kids in the yellow vests if you see them on the news. --helping hands.

I know how SewNSo feels because our area in NJ has been hard hit, luckly we didn't lose our home or possessions and want to help but we're in our upper 70's and don't have the energy to help clean out homes, shovel sand, etc. So far we've donated clothes and boxes of diapers and wipes to local distribution center set up by a local community group. So as a quilter I'm doing what quilters do best, making some quillts. I'll be donating the ones I make, twin size if possible, to a local church's Food Pantry that will be helping Sandy's victims as long as they are in need. Other members of my guild and a friends's guild will be sending me some quilts too. May in Jersey

He is going to take a 1/2 day on Monday and run to Wal-Mart to get a coat. Gov't workers aren't allowed to accept gifts.

I would think warm clothes, blankets, etc. would be very welcomed by people in NY and NJ. The wonderful volunteers are amazing going in and tearing the "guts" out of houses so people can again rebuild. I saw a news clip last night where people were allowed to visit their property in Staten Island and in one house there was a large BOAT in the living room, just unreal what's happened.
