I always say NO! What happened?? Dinner napkins
Does anyone know how to make napkins?? Can they be made out of polyester? Trying to help a very sweet relative, to rent so they match, they are $1 each. Not even sure my machine will sew them?? And what kind of edge do you use? How many can you get out of a yard of fabric? ANY suggestions will be happily appreciated!!

I like napkins to be 20 inches square. So out of 45 inch wide fabric if it is 40 inches long, I can get 5 napkins.
If you are using 60 inch wide fabric, you can get three across, so 6 out of 40 inches of fabric. Personally I prefer cotton or linen for napkins. Poly does not absorb well and holds onto greasy stains. |
This is a search that showed up a lot of napkin patterns. There are a lot of ways to make them.

If you have a serger, a rolled hem makes a nice edge. Since I don't have a serger, I do the fold the napkin corner, sew a little miter on the wrong side, flip the corner out and fold in 1/4 inch and use my edge stitching foot. There are videos on YouTube.

I have been making my own napkins for years; tried all sizes and fabrics. Now I routinely cut them at 18" square and I can get 4 out of a yard. Then I press 1/2" over around all four sides, then sit down at the machine and fold under that 1/2" to 1/4" and sew them down. As for fabric, I uses whatever feels good and is washable. I use mostly cotton and cotton blends. One of the things I did early on, was to go to a place like Home Goods, or Penny's or Macy's and take a look at their dinner napkins and see what you like. Then go home and make them the same way!

My experience with cotton poly is the grease never comes out. I stick with 100% cotton. Harder to find material suitable for napkins.

I get per yrd. just split it. a bit oversized, but then they are good to go. I use fun prints and serge the edge.
now I have some holiday fabric and some with ll kinds of pasta on them. I also make placemats to match. really fun things. |
She changed her mind and I will be giving her the price of the napkin rental as her wedding gift!! Shhhhh, that was close!!

Years ago (over 15) I made a bunch of napkins out of cotton/poly blend fabric. I used my serger and did the rolled hems. I also used a patterned fabric. I still use those napkins today. I probably can't see the stains because of the patterned fabric, but if I can't see them, neither can anybody else. The hems are starting to look a little ragged so I will soon have to sew some more. I will use the same recipe I use before.
