I couldn't believe this.
 

My sew group were doing quilt demos Saturday for Quilt Day at a local museum. One boy about 10 and his brother who was older were watching me sew a quick project. I asked them to help finish and they did. I then press the project to make it lay flat. I gave the piece to the younger boy and he said it's warm, how did you make it warm? I said I ironed it with the iron. He looked puzzled. I said it's a small iron, yours at home is probably bigger. His older brother said we don't have anything like that and the way he said it he was very impressed that I had one! His Dad came over and the younger boy said Dad this lady made this warm with that. He pointed to the iron. His Dad said yeah, an iron. Don't you now what an iron is? The mother came over about that time and looked at the iron and then back to the father and said we don't have one of those in the house. So I guess the boys don't know about them. Good Grief give me a break.:D

ha.ha. modern changes in fabric i guess. otherwise they walk around wrinkled! cute.
when about 12 yrs old i ironed my wrist!!! had a brown scar for many years. ironing is not for the faint of heart.

Considering that at university, my son used his as a doorstop, yep I believe it!

my grandkids had asked me a few years back what an iron was... can't believe my DD doesn't own one!

The first time I ever heard about people not owning an iron was about 8 years ago. A new gal was hired at work & during one of our conversations she said she didn't own an iron. I guess my jaw dropped to the ground. I couldn't believe it. I should have known because she came to work with wrinkled shirts on. :eek: Never in my lifetime would I even consider going to work with a wrinkled shirt.

Well, I seldom iron clothes..My DH is a minister and so he usually wears a suit and I just have to worry about his shirts and when I wash them I am careful not to let them sit in the washer or dryer too long so they don't get wrinkled...if they do I rewash them..hehe..

I have a big iron and a small travel iron for quilting.

Getting back to the onebyone's post, it is bad that many children are not being taught some fundamental chores. I had a young girl in a class that did not know how to use a broom. I taught all my five kids, boys and girls most of the home chores and DH taught them outdoor stuff such as mowing lawns, trimming bushes, weeding, raking, using a hand and electric saw, proper way to hold and use a hammer etc.

Either their mom doesn't like to iron or is like most 20-30 somethings out there and has a steamer.

I have reared two grandchildren for the past almost 13 years. They know how to do their own laundry and iron. My middle son was in the military, so of course, he had to press his uniforms just so!

What bothered me was how ignorant the boys were about what an iron was and what it does even if they use one or not. My three year old grandson knows an iron gets hot and you press fabric with it. Same sadness as the neighbor boy some years ago who came to my house and I was taking cookies out of the oven. He was flabbergasted that cookies could be made at home. He had no idea. His mother laughed and said her oven hadn't been turned on in years. The family moved and I don't know if the youngster ever go home baked cookies again.
