Been out a few days having the laptop cleaned and debugged. My tech says it looks like I got the virus from the board.. not exactly sure where abouts.. has anyone else had any problems?

craftybear 03-26-2010 07:55 PM

Yikes!!!!! No problems here.

DebraK 03-26-2010 09:25 PM

I've picked up one or two. I hardly open the links that aren't tutorials anymore.

Lisanne 03-26-2010 10:08 PM

No, but I keep my anti-virus up to date and run regular scans.

I can't fathom how your tech could figure that the virus came from this board. Maybe it came from an email or a download file or some other website.

marsye 03-27-2010 03:02 AM

Not yet! I use Lysol

watterstide 03-27-2010 03:37 AM

none here either.
i got one a month ago..a nasty one, lost everything on the computer, had to be reformatted. but DH opened up some crap that his friends send..jokes,links to jokes..etc..he has been warned! lol
i have free Super anti-spyware, and Malaware running with my paid AVG program. since they are free, i have to run them myself. i run them once a week.

This is why you must have a backup...i learned the hard way.

thequilteddove 03-27-2010 03:43 AM

None here.

starlight 03-27-2010 03:57 AM

No problems here.

tlrnhi 03-27-2010 04:14 AM

None here, but I know that hotmail has been plagued by sending viruses.

Barbm 03-27-2010 04:16 AM

none here- but i have geeks in my house who thrive (I mean he LOVES finding bugs) on people's computers getting sick.

He thinks it's funny when someone freaks over a virus. He goes into "geek mode" as I call it and about 2 our 3 hours later- smooth running machine.

So I guess my tuition checks are worth it.

I have a few different anti-virus and I run them and malware weekly.. this nasty little bugger blocked me from malware or anything else. my roommate managed to circumvent it..ran a scan and found the buggers.. 7 or them. admittedly some could have been from opening links but the worst on hit me when I was in here and the chat. I have no idea how he traced it.. but he came up with the site name telling me that looked like where it came from without any prompting from me. I'll be the first to readily admit that I am EXTREMELY challenged when it comes to techie stuff. That's why I have someone I can call at a moments notice if I have a problem. He said he had no idea why someone would target this type of site. but advised me to contact Admin which I have, just to give them a heads up.

WOW.. that sounds awesome. My tech is a buddy from work who keeps the hospital computers singing. He is awesome. I just turn it over to him.. and now my computer is SOOOOO much faster. He and I are both interested in Motorcycles and restoring old cars.. I have a '72 Beetle and he has a Vintage Cadillac Hearse.. I'm getting ready to make the velvet curtains for the Hearse for him. Great swap!!

Barbm 03-27-2010 05:52 AM

I have a computer programmer, a network techie and the youngest hasn't decided what specialization. You should listen to them talk. Makes me laugh.

I am very lucky to have them. The office computer got a bug and I called the youngest and said there's a check if you can get this done asap. Bring home the tower, got the sinister laugh of I am better than the virus and off he went. Seriously, 2 hours later- bug free and he's happily telling me what sites to stay away from.

He loves to fix them. I like how he loves the computers but I really wished he used his super Math skills to a better advantage.

cjomomma 03-27-2010 06:49 AM

Had a virus once that was attached to my DH's e-mail account. Mcafee virus scan turned out to be crap. Now I use AVG.com/free. Must be goggled to get the right AVG. but I have learned that there is a virus out there that can turn your AVG off an infect your comp if you don't run a scan every other day.

redrummy 03-27-2010 07:50 AM

Yes, lost everything in memory. had a back up drive, but it won't work, says it is damaged or something, I hate that I lost all pics, but I now do not open links, just look at what is posted. Had all antivirus and such, it lock up and said I needed to run a scan. That was the virus that wiped me out.

The comp guy was able to save my pic,s for. Cost me 50.00 more bucks but was worth it. Can yoursdo this for you?

AtHomeSewing 03-27-2010 08:32 AM

I have a Mac. :)

MI Applique Queen 03-27-2010 02:01 PM

I got that virus that comes up and says you are getting a virus and have to run the anti virus program to stop it. I didn't recognize the anti virus program and wouldn't click on it. It kept coming up so I shut the computer down. The virus got in but I shut down my computer before it could do the worst. My sisters husband is a computer tech and works on just such things as viruses. He took it and fixed it in a few hours. He laughted too when I got upset about it. Those guys just love their work. He said if you get a message like that again or think something is going on turn the computer off before the whole virus can be down loaded. That keeps the amount of damage down.

Alu_Rathbone 03-27-2010 04:46 PM

A great program that my friend sent me is this thing called Malware Bytes. They have a free version of it on their site... I downloaded it and it works great... I use it along side the $50 one I bought that DID NOT catch the horrible virus my computer had... but Malware byte caught it and destroyed it!

I guess attacks can get past anti-virus software and firewalls at times. I still have trouble believing a hacker targeted this site. Maybe he targeted your computer and found you while you were here? I dunno. Maybe he did target this website.

Sounds like you did all the right things. Sorry it happened to you.

quilterj 03-27-2010 05:55 PM

No not here.

I don't have trouble believing it.
Less than a week ago, I was pm'd by someone that called themselves: quilterd.
At first glance i pronounced it: quil-t*rd...you get the picture. I thought, "who would nickname themselves that?"
Opened it and without a hi, hello, or i am new etc. began talking about having the same birthday and went into all the hobbies they are into.
They said their birth year was 1928. That would make them 80 years old.
If you had seen the list of hobbies along with gardening and canning...have you ever gardened or canned?
I have. can't anymore, and I am in my fifties...disabled, but the point is...I was having trouble believing this person could do all that, so I clicked on their profile...no info whatsoever and had just joined!
I did not reply that night and they never showed again.
I believe that everything that glitters is not a golden (aged) quilter!thumbup:

Alu_Rathbone 03-27-2010 06:13 PM

Trolls need not apply on here... Thats horrible... I really don't like when people do that.

FLEnglishTeacher 05-30-2010 11:50 PM

I picked up the virus on my desktop... Hot Mess. Trying to fix it now.

sewcrafty 05-31-2010 02:04 AM

I've had something trying to attack my computer this past week everytime I was on the board. Norton's kept popping up saying, "We just blocked, etc." It seems to have stopped doing this yesterday though.

CarrieAnne 05-31-2010 04:01 AM

Not here!

Luv Quilts and Cats 05-31-2010 04:01 AM

No, no problems here.

Alu_Rathbone 05-31-2010 06:20 AM

I do a weekly check with Malwarebytes, I let it run and it gets anything, if it needs to, and then it will quarenteen anything that needs to be rid of...

brushandthimble 05-31-2010 06:25 AM

yes, have a had a few quarentined recently, usually while here on the board.
Never thought they were coming from here though.

sewcrafty 05-31-2010 06:56 AM

Hey Brush PM me and let me know what you did!!!

Sorry for the hi-jack.

rndelling 04-28-2011 06:37 AM

Yes, I have. My computer crashed and I lost everything.
I saw a discussion on here recently saying that there aren't any rollover ads, etc. but there are.
When reading my newsletter I accidently rolled over a Welch's grapejuice add and shortly after that was when my computer crashed.
After getting my computer repaired I upgraded my virus protection and it now tells me that the newsletter is dangerous and not to open it.
It doesn't stop me from getting on the site, looking at pictures, etc but it will not let me get here via newsletter.
I love this site and have learned so much but it certainly isn't worth losing pictures of my precious grandchildren just to read the newsletter.

I back up all picks and quilty stuff on a portable hard drive that i bought from newegg.com for$79 on sale. Worth it's weight in gold!

Occasionally my firewall (Avast!) pops up to tell me it has successfully prevented something from attacking my computer while I'm using it, including a time or three when I've been on this site.
