I love to listen to books while I sew
 

I found this site...http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/ and it is full of free to use titles. They are all the old out of copyright titles but still so good to listen to old favorites. Right now I am listening to the Edgar Rice Burroughs "John Carter of Mars" series. These books bring back old memories of me reading a chapter a night to my boys at bedtime. It instilled a need to read in them as I found out they were reading ahead during the day because they could not wait till bedtime to find out what happened next. After John Carter we moved on to Tarzan. Oh yes the biases of a century ago do come through but still if you like doughty hero's and brave and beautiful princesses it holds up....no wussy fainting maids here, the princesses are as good with a sword as they are beautiful...The reality that we now can see pictures of Mars as it is does not diminish the lovely fantasy of John Carter's Mars in the books.
There are lots of other types of titles, just in case you are not a science fiction fan, check it out I am sure you will find something you want to listen to.

Wow! Thank you - I am trying to get up to the current technology, because I love to listen while I quilt, or garden, or do BORING things that must be done. DH got me an MP3 player for Xmas, so have been loving the music, but now I need to expand to listening to books, which I really enjoy. And there's so much available for free, if you just know how to find it!!

I am a member of audible.com. You can look at their website and decide if it is for you. I love it. You can download the books to your computer and/or other devices. They have a huge selection. I really enjoy it. It is not free but it is much less expensive than purchasing the books on CD and once you have purchased them, they are yours.

Thanks for the link!!! My library hasn't made the leap into the 21st century yet and only offers books on "cassette" (yes you heard me right!!). So I get all my audio books from Audible ... usually when they have a big sale (I also have a membership where I use my credits for new releases). This web site will be a great addition to my audible source!!

I must admit though, I tried listening while I sew and I can't. I can concentrate EITHER on the book, or the sewing. However if I have a lot of seam-ripping I can listen while doing that mindless chore.

Thanks for the link! I use CDs from the library but sometimes they are so beat up that they are useless. I have a very poor track record for other devices. I bought an iPod about 4 years ago because I wanted to download books from the library and, even though everyone tells me it is easy, I've never figured out how to do it. Now I have a Kindle and haven't gotten around to that one, either. I really don't want to pay for books as I probably go through 3 or 4 a month and that adds up.

sparky's mom.......I download from the Library ALL the time. When I first started doing it, I was walked through the process by the Library. Ask yours if they won't help. It really is easy and once it's set up, it's forever.....:)

I download books here through the Fingerlakes Library System. It's all free and I never have to leave home. I love it. Great selections too!

I rent audio books from my library on line. Download them to my IPod, and listen while I am sewing

I listen to audio books all the time, can't even go to sleep without them (on very, very low.) Sewing, cleaning, gardening - just attach a very long extension cord and clean room by room, and before you know it the cleaning is done. We hardly even watch t.v. any more

Thanks for the link. You can also download free audiobooks at librivox.com. I've listened some to books on my Kindle, but a good narrator makes so much difference in my enjoyment.

I have a membership to audible.com and listen to nearly 100 books a year. I enjoy listening so much that I'm thinking of cutting my Directv package back to the bare minimum since watching TV has started to bore me. I listen just about all the time and find myself avoiding tasks like vacuuming and mowing when I can't listen.

I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas from my daughter. I didn't know it could read to me. I thought only I could read on it.
Does the Fire do this also? I would love to be able to listen while I quilt.

You know, this is a great idea in theory and I'm a big supporter of our local library but I have checked out audio books before and quite often they are so badly damaged that they can't be played. I've reported the damage to the staff and the usual reaction is to barely acknowledge the information and then just put the damaged items back in service. The problem may just be a local one, but I'd be curious to see if anyone else has had similar experiences.

Thank you so much for sharing. I love listening to books while I sew & sometimes my library can be a hassle too. I already made a mental "wishlist" of so many classics I'll be listening to.

First off, if your library doesn't have a book you want to listen to, perhaps there is a link with other libraries in your state, as in Minnesota. It is called Mn Link. I can get a book that our libraries in St. Paul do not have. Works good for me. Also, I love (I have said this before) the Jennifer Chiaverini stories (but start with the very first book and go in order. I love Carol Higgins Clark mysteries. Actually, I love all books. I love historical fiction.....am going to start on Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker (Jennifer Chiaverini), as soon as I finish my CHC book. I listen to them when I am sewing, when I am cleaning, when I am driving, when I am sitting out in the backyard enjoying the weather - NOT THIS YEAR!!!!!!! Right now it is only +30 degrees and snowing lightly. Enjoy the day! Edie

I always report the damaged audio books and my library has always offered to try to find another copy for me. I think some of the audios they have can be replaced by an agreement they have with the publisher - not all, but some. Anyway, they seem to appreciate being told about the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think you are probably right - it is just a matter of getting myself over there at a time of day that isn't too rushed. And it would probably help if I figure out where I put the iPod. :D

Thanks for the site, went there yesterday afternoon and spent the entire time downloading for my Ipod. Only problem is too many titles to choose from and since I downloaded for Itunes, had to click in the program to download the remaining chapters. This in turn seized up my PC a couple times but maybe I shouldn't get so greedy.............

Again, thanks for the website as I'll be there again this afternoon looking for more titles. Great classics!!!!

I love to listen to my audio books. I prefer mysteries but 'Call of the Wild' was fantastic. Even my DH is hooked now.

Love to listen to books on CD. I have been doing it for quite a few years . I have always gotten my books from the libary or else I would be in the poor house. Once in a while like now,moved and no card yet, I will buy them from thrift stores. I go through at least 5-7 books a week. Especially now when all my sewing stuff is in storage. :) I will try out the link for sure if I can download to my computer and then burn onto a cd since my computer is now at the other side of the house from my bedroom where I will be sewing.

Puck116: Yes, I have a Kindle Fire, too. You need to download the free app, Overdrive. And going digital means no more damaged CDs and such. I love it.

This thread has been so helpful. Thanks to the op for starting it and to the others for building on that info. I usually have soft music playing in the background, but I think I'll try listening to a book.

I am and audible.com junkie. Any money that doesn't get spent on quilting is used on audible books. I listen right from my iphone where ever I go, what ever I do. It gets spendy, but it is worth it to me.

I start to listen as I sew but then find I forget to pay attention as I get too involved in sewing!
