Our power has been out for the last 4 or so hours, the power lines at the end of the street "fell off"! Lucky no one was hurt, but I didn't realise how heavily my life relies on electricity. No computer, so couldn't talk to you guys, couldn't sew (although it's just occurred to me I could have done some hand sewing), worst of all, no coffee! Couldn't even vacuum or do some washing, how bad is that!

I had a whole day of sewing planned, now most of it has gone. :-(

You never realize how much you depend on electricity til it's out. I know not being able to do house work hard, but not being able to sew is horrible. Tee Hee.

I know how you felt! I had something like that happen too. I thought the power loss during the day wouldn't be too bad until I wanted to turn on some music while cleaning.... same thing!

I do have a hand sewing project, but I really wanted to work on my black and white blocks, which mean a sewing machine and definitely an iron. I was almost to the point of eyeing up the barbecue and trying to figure a way to drop my iron on the cook plate without the plastic melting! LOL

Hate when that happens. Our power and cable goes out ALL the time!
I don't much mind the cable going out, I can find something to do, but when power is out, nothing can be done. BUT...I CAN make coffee! We have a gas stove, so I can manually light it and boil water, then run it thru the machine. :) :)

Our power was out for a week one winter. I got pretty good at cooking in the insert in the fire place. A lot of grilled cheese sandwiches. Had a sandwich press for open fires, and old fashioned coffee pot we could sit on top of insert. All the good ole days. not! Love my coffee and can't do with for long. glad that I hand quilt at times like that.

We do have a gas stove but it seemed like far too much hard work to go and dig it out of the garage and hook it up.

Our kitchen stove is gas, so that's not a problem. The last place we lived, when power went out, we just fired up the gas grill. Worked great!

Yes, power blipped out for about 10 min. Happens ALL the time! Sometimes it's out for just a few minutes, other times it can be hours. The power lines here are just old. The wind can blow the wrong way and make the power go out.

The thought of losing it that often scares the crap outta me! lol

Friends of ours live rurally, and their water is pumped to the house by an electric pump. So if the power goes out they lose their water too! We have gas hot water here, so at least I could still have a shower this morning.

We lose everything once the power goes out. No water, nothing. Stove will still work, just have to maually light it. Just can't use the oven because temp can't be controlled.

I'm definitely a city girl... I couldn't cope! lol

Make mental note.....buy generator if I ever move to an area where there is power outages.... :D :wink: :D I have only had one power outage in the 5 years I have lived here. I would hate to live somewhere and not be able to do as I want throughout the day :x When I lived on my brother's property we would have them 2-3 time during the winter for 1-4 days at a time. He had a generator and a wood stove, I had a gas stove...I did the cooking and we hung out in the warmth of his house visiting and watching tv...it was a pretty good set up...he would have drawn the line though at me bringing a sewing machine :lol: :roll: :lol:

Another story:

A few years ago we had a power outage here and being the major night owls my sister and I are it was NOT fun. The business building next to us had another power source for their outside lighting so we packed our dogs into the car and drove over there to use their lights to read. Sure puzzled the policeman to find two ladies, a Rottweiler mix and two Dobermans camped outside the tool rental place, but he was sympathetic too!

Welcome back! My computer has been down for a week, and let me tell you it is GREAT to be back to find out what has been going on. We definitely rely on new stuff now. My folks are in the area where the ice storm did so much damage in January. Their power was off, but they heat with wood. The big problem was the well! No water for the critters and house. Had to take a generator to them. I am a city girl! :lol:

Last winter 2007 we were out of power for 6 days due to heavy ice everywhere. We have gas stove and we heated the house with one burner. Kept it at 68 not bad. But had to be aware of carbon monoxide.

My sons are electricians and my son Nathan was heating his whole neighborhood with a big generator from his business. Keeping furnaces going etc. My son inlaw brought us his small generator about day 2 and we hooked up our freezers and fridge. then Nathan brought us a larger generator on day 4 and hooked up our lights and we were able to have tv and I got to use my sewing machine again!!! Big deal for me I was going crazy!!!!! I am used to sewing off and on from the time I get up to the time I go to bed so it was really hard!!

We went and bought our own generator and haven't had to use it in the last year thank goodness!!

But everyone in town cringes everytime the lights flicker!! We have a local quick stop type station just a block and a half from us but if they don't have power then we still can't get anything from there either. They hooked up a generator to keep from losing their freezers and coolers.

Don't want to do that again! We frequently lose our power due to a squirrel or raccoon getting into the power boxes up on the lines somewhere and one time it was just a spider!! It shorts out something in there. And one time we lost it because someone had an accident and crashed into a pole out in the country and we are in town but it took out several of our small towns here.

Blue, you need to get a treadle machine. Solve all your problems!!

My partner got home last night from work and took great delight in pointing out the large battery and inverter he bought for the camper to run my lap top would have quite easily run my sewing maching AND iron. *sigh*

And funnily enough beachlady, I have my eye out for a treadle machine, purely because I like old stuff (like my partner! lol) They're quite expensive here, being antiques, and I'm not sure I'd cope with the speed (or lack of! )
