I pad decision

I pad or Kindle, any thoughts? I would love an I pad but I sure don't want the added expense. Would I be able to access the internet on a kindle or e-reader? Thanks for your help.

quiltingcandy 07-05-2015 11:07 AM

My DD is a 5th grade teacher and they use computers a lot now. They have gone to i-pads now over all the other items. My other DD bought the I-pad mini because she needs the internet in what she does and buys a lot of e-books. They really like that they don't need to buy extra protection like with the others.
Sorry I can't comment on the others because everyone I know that has bought the i-pads over the other items.

mrsponcho1 07-05-2015 11:32 AM

There are several different kinds of Kindles. I bought the one that you can access the internet and you can even take pics with it. I have really enjoyed mine. I wasn't for sure what I wanted, so I went to staples and looked at all the brands that they had in the store. Took my time and just browsed the different options. I live in a small community so don't have many places to shop. Staples and Walmart when it comes to electronics. I knew that I wanted something that was wifi, because I didn't want another bill to pay. I take my Kindle to the library and also take on vacations.

Tartan 07-05-2015 11:35 AM

I just Googled Kindle reviews and a quick read states that it does have a browser but it needs a WiFi connection. It also cannot play videos so Missouri Star and Youtube would be out? Check out some of the reviews to see if it is what you want.
I use an iPad with WiFi to do Quiltingboard (post pictures) YouTube, Missouri Star Quilt co. videos, send and receive email, Face time, Facebook and games. The iPad is not for printing unless you have an air printer.

I like my Verizon LG tablet 8.3. I have had it for a year and use if for business also. I was fortunate last year we got 2 phones for the price of one and the tablet was free. We have not had trouble with Verizon service or products and I am not getting paid for vouching for this. Just saying this really works for us and I have it with me almost at the hip.

donnai 07-05-2015 11:50 AM

I have a kindle and can access u tube msqc and Netflix with no problem

notmorecraft 07-05-2015 11:52 AM

I have both, but my kindle is paper white and only for reading, ( cause I can read in sunshine or at night when I can't sleep) my friend has kindle fire, but apparently you can't get a lot of the apps avail to other android tablets or iPad, you can only get kindle apps.

Neesie 07-05-2015 12:15 PM

We have both and use the iPad much, much more than the Kindle.

ManiacQuilter2 07-05-2015 12:36 PM

I bought a NuVision from Costco that I am very happy with that is an android tablet for $149 online. Thing seriously what you want this tablet to be able to do.

b.zang 07-05-2015 01:09 PM

Both. An e-reader is best when built for just reading without the back-lighting that comes with colour. A soft white Kindle is quite affordable, leaving you enough for an iPAD as well. iPADs are replacing desktop and laptop computers in many situations. If you buy only one, buy and iPAD.

Onetomatoplant 07-05-2015 01:49 PM

I can't speak to the kindle, but I have an iPad and I love it. I use the kindle app and the nook app, but I get most of my books through the library on the overdrive app. I still have my nook for when I want to read outside (it's non-glare).

yngldy 07-05-2015 03:29 PM

Bought DH a Galaxy tab 4 7" tablet. It is the same size as a paperback book for holding, can use sd card, internet. You can change font and color background for reading, but do not know if you can read outside as he sits in his chair to read. Says he could not go back to a regular book now, and didn't know how he got along without it for so long. Have become a tablet widow. lol

Wanabee Quiltin 07-06-2015 04:11 AM

My DH has two Ipads and he loves them. I don't care for them much at all. I prefer my laptop. I don't find the Ipad as easy to navigate as I do my laptop. I would try them out before you buy anything, they are $$$.

NJ Quilter 07-06-2015 04:18 AM

I, too, have the Samsung Galaxy tablet - android platform. I can go anywhere online; order either paid or free books and read them; have all my email accounts (yes, multiple!); can get to my cloud-stored documents; take photos. Will do it all, really - BUT it only has a wifi connection. I did not want another bill either. I have a very limited data plan on my phone (and I really didn't want that but had to for several reasons). But I can take my tablet to any location that has wifi available and do anything online that I might need. I bought it for business purposes so I did not need to be chained to my computer all day. I can be out and about and if I need to access something online to resolve business issues, it's easier than trying to manage all of that on my phone. Have never used an Ipad so can't offer an opinion on those.

Stitchnripper 07-06-2015 04:30 AM

I have an iPhone, iMac, and iPad. I love them all. I find I use the iPad a lot more than I use the computer anymore. I am considered "elderly" and have no trouble navigating.

nstitches4u 07-06-2015 05:39 AM

iPad. I have both, but only use the iPad for accessing the internet (except for downloading books).

I'm on a kindle fire right now and I get on YouTube all the time. My kindle is the device I use all the time to get on the internet. You can now get a better version of mine for 99.00. I don't like the iPad. My Kidd have one and I can't figure it out. I'm still learning the kindle, but it's easier for me.

willferg 07-06-2015 05:52 AM

I have a first generation iPad and a recent iPad mini. The mini is great. The original actually got kind of heavy when reading a book, and even though the mini has a smaller screen, it's still perfectly fine for videos.

quiltwiz 07-06-2015 06:16 AM

I have an iPad and love it. Didn't want to purchase another specific printer, so i email whatever i want to print to myself...then go to my old desktop and print as usual with the desktop computer that is hooked up to my old printer...works every time. But you must have that old standby computer and printer and they must be synced to your iPad.

Quilty-Louise 07-06-2015 06:39 AM

I have an iPad 3, and my hubs has a Nexus 7 tablet.

The tablet has is smaller (7"), where my iPad 3 is about 10".

My hubs gave about $250 three (3) years ago for his tablet.
However my iPad was almost free (was given to me by the
"other" Louise (step-MIL), it was my payment for doing some
sewing work for her.

Both are capable of internet, but you need to at least have Wi-Fi
available.

romanojg 07-06-2015 06:49 AM

I think you need to check them all out and see what has the most features that you would use. The biggest draw back that I've ever seen with Apple (ipad) is that you can't use an SD card so once you run out of memory that's it. I don't have the Kindle but they have so many different models and price points that most would be able to find one to fit into their budget and needs. I have several Nooks, Nook tablets and now the Samsung Galaxy thru Nook, I love my Nooks, all of them. I can go to all websites with all of them. Only the first one they had allowed you to pay extra for ATT for internet. A lot of people don't want the extra bill especially when you can go to most fast foods or coffee shops and get it for free. You don't have to go inside either. The nook supports multiple platforms and has some mini versions of Office so that you can do more with it. Mine also takes really good pictures and my grandkids love the Nook for you tube because all they have to do is speak into it and it'll take them where they want to go. This is really great for the 4yr old who can't spell yet and loves how to videos. I love that if I have an issue I can go into the local store to get help. None of these tablets will be replacing the computer in the near future at least. None of them have the capabilities to install software on them like a pc can. You could get a small netbook that has all of these features but is just a small laptop so you can do it all. Like I said, go to Best Buy, or any store that sells it al and check them out and see which would suit your needs and price point. If its just for downloading books or magazines, Barnes and Noble and probably other sites have a free ereader that can download to you pc.

Jeanne S 07-06-2015 07:49 AM

I have an iPad, Kindle paper white, and Kindle Fire. The iPad has the most applications and broadest capabilities. If you are only looking for an e-reader and a way to do emails and LIGHT Internet browsing, a Kindle Fire is great and less expensive. But if you want a robust Internet browser, photo applications, and many useful apps, in addition to an eReader, you will need the iPad--it is worth every penny. Both will run on local WiFi, but if you want them to run anywhere without wifi, you will need to buy the more expensive models with 4G and then buy a monthly data plan with your wireless telephone/Internet provider.

DonnaC 07-06-2015 08:20 AM

I like my Kindle (I have the older Kindle 8.9), but I LOVE my iPad mini! It's so much faster, and easier to access everything (Missouri Star even has its own app for the tutorials). If you buy directly from Apple, and sign up for their credit account, you'll get several months to pay it off at no interest. That was a real selling point for me. :)

madamekelly 07-06-2015 11:14 AM

I sold my ereader, and used the money as the downpayment on my ipad. I have an apple imac, ipad, and ipod, and I wanted them to play well together.

SewingSew 07-06-2015 02:45 PM

I own 2 Kindle Fires—a first generation, and the latest most expensive 4[SUP]th[/SUP] generation. I have never owned an IPad or used one, so I can’t speak about that. But I will say that YouTube has a video that compares the KindleFire to the IPad, so you may want to search for that and watch it. According to the techie guy that did the comparison, the IPad has superior sound, but the Kindle Fire has a superior display. My new Fire has stereo speakers and is quite loud. I think the most important thing is to determine what your own personal needs are when choosing between the two.

My first generation Kindle did not have enough storage space, so when I bought the new Fire, I made sure to purchase the maximum 64GB. I wish that the Kindle would accept an SD card, but it doesn’t. I love my Kindle Fire. I use the older one as an alarm clock and to let my Grandson “read” books and play his apps. There are some very educational apps available for him. One of the things that I love about my new Kindle Fire is that it has the ability to mirror to my TV. It communicates with my Roku, and I am able to watch DroidTV wirelessly using it. Droid TV is an amazing app that works like a DVR. I download shows to the Kindle and then mirror them to the TV. DroidTV costs $39.99 per year, and there are a lot of great shows to watch—Game of Thrones, True Blood, Reign, Shark Tank, Who Do You Think You Are?, etc.

I use my Kindle all the time. I search the web with it, check email, and can watch Netflix, HuluPlus, Crackle, HBOgo, YouTube videos, and PBS. Every Day I can take advantage of the Free App of The Day. One of my favorite apps was a Free App. It is an Audubon Society’s Bird Watching app. It has great birdsongs. I also have a digital library membership and I check out Kindle books and audio books using my Fire. I can read in bed at night and change my settings so that I don’t disturb my husband. I can change the fonts to a larger size. I can bookmark pages. I like to look up vocabulary words when I read, and it does that for me. I like that I don’t have to flip the pages when I read. Instead I just swipe the screen. It has a front-facing and a rear-facing HD camera. I play all sorts of games on it. I check the weather each day, and I have a moon-phase app that I love. It is an MP3 player, and I use that with ear-buds and it sounds great. When I am cooking, I like that I can look up recipes and use my Kindle easily while I am cooking. It is small and portable and very lightweight. It is great to be able to stick it in my purse and pull it out in a waiting room. If you want 4g, it is available when you purchase your Kindle. I also have 2 laptops and a desktop computer, so I wasn’t looking for another computer. I truly wanted a compact, lightweight pad that was the size of a book. The Kindle Fire was a good choice for me.

Here is a problem I have encountered - the free wifi at a retail establishments is sometimes very very slow - it is hit or miss. I get the wifi signal, but then the device cannot connect. I have this problem at my gym. Free wifi, but, so inadequate as to be unusable. So I don't think I am able to depend on it. My library has great free wifi.

IBQUILTIN 07-06-2015 03:04 PM

Haven't used an ipad, but I love my kindle. I sit up in bed at night and enjoy my videos

decky 07-06-2015 04:05 PM

I have the Kindle Fire which I can download books from Amazon or from my public library, read my mail, has alot of apps that can be had. I also have an IPad Mini, does the same thing as the Fire plus alot of other things. Once again alot of apps are available to download.

I have a Kindle Fire and you can get onto the Internet with it.

I would go with the samsung tablet. I have an ipad and I honestly don't care for it at all

glorcour 07-07-2015 03:28 AM

Play with your ipad, get a simplified guide to help and see the many things you can do. i have both Ipad and a Samsung and use my I products more often

Nonna Judi 07-07-2015 06:02 AM

I have purchased 3 Kindles and have love, love, loved them. I surf the web, read the QB, do my banking on them. Make sure you don't buy the reader, then you won't be able to search the web. Good luck in your decision.

Snooze2978 07-07-2015 06:40 AM

I got a used Samsung table 8" mdl 5110. It can connect to my internet as well as those at the fast food joints free (if they have free internet). I can read from it using one of the many book apps, watch videos, read my emails and search the internet. When searching for a tablet, some use only bluetooth, some use only wi-fi and some use both. Mine uses both so I was lucky as I wasn't aware of this option.

judykay 07-07-2015 07:02 AM

It might depend on the Kindle you have, I get internet, you tube, Missouri Star videos etc on mine as well as many games. Check out the various features on both. I love the customer service I get from Amazon with my Kindle, I have the instant chat feature and they can't see you but you can see them and they show you step by step what to do to fix what ever problem you have. When they are advising you what to do they circle the area where you are to do whatever it is they are asking you to do. They are also very friendly and know what they are doing.
