Right after Christmas I took a few days off from quilting to make this rocking horse for my DGD. My son said he would like one like the one he used as a child because it is indestructible. Since another DGD is using the original, I outlined the parts, traced them onto the wood and cut it out. I sanded, and test fitted it (think design wall 3D) before I put it in my luggage to take to Singapore and put it together finally. It was fun to do and I hope she and her big sister get a lot of use from it. It will be awhile before baby is old enough to ride it, but easier (or at least less expensive) to take than to ship later.

Very nice. I know my granddaughter would love it.

MamaInRed 02-07-2013 11:44 AM

I love this so much better than the plastic stuff they make today. You did a great job.

QuiltnNan 02-07-2013 12:15 PM

very nicely done!

Beautiful rocking horse! I would have love to see the look on the custom agents face if they checked inside your luggage.

Marycumi 02-07-2013 12:17 PM

I love it. It should last a long time, a lot longer than any plastic horse. Her children will be able to enjoy riding it too!

Grandma Peg 02-07-2013 12:17 PM

My boys had one similar to that you really used. You did a great job.

Looks like something that will last for a long time. I had one son that loved rocking on a horse and I would hear him in the middle of the night rocking on it. Would have to get up and put him back to bed many times!!!

What a hoot to think that horsie traveled in your luggage! The girl's steed is magnificent and so are you!

Chasing Hawk 02-08-2013 08:30 AM

Grama of the Month!!

What a wonderful gift. I have a scroll saw in the shop, but I have so many quilting projects as well as other sewing stuff to do. I never can find the time to use the beasty.

callen 02-08-2013 08:40 AM

Wow, lucky kids !! That is beautiful.

caspharm 02-08-2013 08:55 AM

It looks great. Did it affect your weight limit for luggage? :)

Sandy65 02-09-2013 05:24 AM

Nice rocking horse. So you have more talent then just quilting.

cherrio 02-09-2013 07:59 AM

Your carpentry skills are great mammab. my niece has one like this but as she has chubby lil thighs, when she rode her "horsey" it was rubbing her thighs red and tender so I made her a "saddle". hers was 10 and 1/2 inches long in the saddle area and 4 inches wide. and almost 1 inch thick. so I made a pad with fabric, warm n natural with some anti skid gripper fabric (by Dritz) on the UNDERSIDE of the saddle, FACING, the wood. so it did not slide and she can get really rocking! it was held together with velcro and I made a little "pillow" for the bum area and sewed it down on all 4 corners. she loves it.

Beautiful job! I also thought about the customs, and security, agents and what they must have thought!

psailer 02-09-2013 11:48 AM

oh that is just darling.. they will all enjoy it for many years...

Tinabug 02-09-2013 02:10 PM

jeanharville 02-09-2013 06:42 PM

You are one awesome grandmother and greatly talented. Thanks for sharing with us. I too would be interested in hearing about the weight and customs situation.

mammab 02-09-2013 07:13 PM

For those who wonder about customs, I didn't have any problems. In fact I had more issues with my camera bag. I was a little concerned too, more because I took the stain along in my checked bag. No problems. I did not have a weight problem, but I was not taking a lot of other heavy things (my daughter was already there with most necessary liquids). I think my bag only weighed about 41 lbs, but it was a very long and awkward duffle. I hope the kids like it, there Dad codes. Thanks for all the compliments.

mammab 02-09-2013 07:14 PM

Wow I will have to remember that in case the baby needs something like that. Sounds really great.

hperttula123 02-13-2013 07:51 PM

You did a wonderful job on it. It's going to last for a very long time.
My mom made a wooden chair for her house when my oldest was very small. She is 16 now and it has been used for all three of my kids. They use it as a chair, a stepstool, and flip it over on it's side to use as a slide. It still looks like the day she made it. Whenever I see the chair sitting at her house, it always makes me smile. I bet she never thought it would have been used that much when she made it. :)
