Ice Cube Bins

What are ice cube bins? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
|
I was wondering that, too. All I can think of is the trays that make ice cubes, but maybe it's the bin that holds ice cubes?
|
They don't seem to come with new refrigerators. They are a bin that holds ice cubes. I use one for holding my misc threads.

ice cube bins are usually used with refrigerators that make ice cubes but they can be bought separately when you purchase ice in the bag and put in the bin. Makes it easier to take from a bin than pull out of the bag. You can purchase them anywhere like Walmart.

http://i5.wal.co/dfw/dce07b8c-ed94/k...im-450x450.jpg When I was a kid, we didn't have refrigerators that made their own ice cubes. You had to fill the trays, wait until they froze, then twist the trays to make the cubes pop out. We'd put the cubes in the bin, refill the trays with water, freeze them.... shampoo, rinse, repeat. I'm surprised people have forgotten this, I'm not THAT old! ;) |
We had ice trays that we used to freeze cubes. And I had an automatic ice maker that dumped cubes into a bin. When we emptied the ice trays they went into a plastic bag or a plastic dish pan.

Thank you,Peckish, for posing the link.
We still do it the "old" way - the make your own ice cubes refrigerators cost a lost less than the automatic ice cube maker models. We had once - ages ago - it seemed to be more bother than it was worth. |
I have water and ice in the door. And I love it!!!! Spent waaaay too many years filling ice trays to go back now. I have a Kenmore side by side fridge/freezer that we bought in I think 1996.

I'm surprised people have forgotten this, I'm not THAT old! ;) But we never put ice in anything other than highballs, or maybe an ice tea for company. I used to watch my mom make a pitcher of Tom Collins, with fresh slices of fruit, but all I got was the lemon-lime soda! And we didn't put ice in soda, or water. It came from the fridge, that was cold enough. Maybe ice cube trays if they still exist would be good for holding machine feet. |
My DH grew up with an ice machine in the freezer - I did not, my mom always said there were 5 ice makers in the house and didn't need any more. (She had 3 dishwashers, too.) I wouldn't hook up the ice maker in our freezer because we have hard wood floors. Five years ago we had some work done in the kitchen and my DH had the contractor hook up the ice maker. (And I must admit, it is very nice to have.)

I remember ice cube trays which is what we called them. I don't like ice/water on the door because I am the biggest offender of splashing water and dropping ice. The add on ice maker for our frig wasn't that expensive.

Oh my stars! Can't believe I am this old I'm not) and people do not know what ice cube trays are.
|
I was talking to my daughter today about how in her generation things have changed so fast!
|
I do know what ice cube trays are. I grew up in a home that did not have a refrig until I was in 3rd grade. But when you talked about ice cube bins I did not think of the container you dumped the ice into. I use mine for a cheese container in the refrig. Never thought to move it to the sewing room. Thanks for all the ideas.

I prefer to purchase bags of ice. I like that it is clear and has no residual freezer tastes.

ice cube bin and tray same thing ?

I would not like the bin that was shown for storing things, as the top is so large it would just take up a whole lot of room on a shelf. |
isn't it a shame new fridges don't come with a tray?
I keep fancy ice cube trays. I have skulls for Halloween, stars, footballs, hearts and shamrocks. they make great chocolate molds too. |
Some more "bins" -
http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&key...l_3ic7cb3i20_e Some would work out better than others for me. Anyone remember the aluminum ice cube trays that the divider part had a handle that one pulled up to loosen the cubes? The cubes were almost always fractured before one could get them out. |

I use my ice cube tray to hold freshly squeezed lemon juice, which I then freeze for later use.
|
Try using the ice cube trays (the kind you fill with water and put back in the freezer) to store your bobbins. They usually store 3 in a section and there are 10 or 12 sections and they are stackable.
|
I still make ice cubes with the ice trays. My second hand fridge used to have an ice maker but no more, but it did have the ice bin when I got it. Right now I have 7 plastic ice cube trays I keep busy.

This thread reminds me of the time I spent looking - and looking and looking - for biscuit cutters. I couldn't find them, and NO ONE knew what they were! At one store, I finally found an older lady working in one of the aisles. I asked if she knew what a biscuit cutter was. She did, and off we went together to find it. We stood in the aisle where she said it should be, and we both looked for several minutes. Finally she made the wry observation that there were 8 different kinds of can openers but no biscuit cutters, and didn't THAT make a statement about today's culture.

My icemaker quit so I bought ice trays. Fill up with water, freeze, pour into icemaker container and use it as if it was making ice. Works perfectly.
