Idaho Springs, CO - Things to do/Quilt Shops
 

DH and I are going to be visiting the Idaho Springs, CO, area in October. I'd love any suggestions related to good eats, fabric/quilting, shopping, hiking, sites that must be seen, etc. We probably won't travel more than an hour in any direction from Idaho Springs unless we know of something specific to go to.

We do plan on taking the train ride in Georgetown, possibly checking out Breckenridge, Golden, and possibly Estes Park.

I believe the quilt shop in Idaho Springs has closed. There are two quilt shops in Estes. There is also a nice quilt shop in Lyons which is east of Estes. There is a really nice shop in Berthoud. Berthoud is about 6 miles south of Loveland. Loveland is on your way to Estes Park. Oct will be a nice month to visit, lots of the tourists are gone, but
come prepared, It could snow at any time.

We visit our daughter and hubby in Keystone/Denver a couple times a year going thru Idaho Springs between points. Lots of places of interest in that hour and half drive. We especially like the drive over Loveland Pass and up Mt Evan. I usually spend 2 weeks with them in January. Beautiful time to visit. But can't count on weather. Out of Georgetown we took a ride on Guanella Pass and saw rams. The Rocky Mt National park Drive on Hwy 34 out of Estes Park is beautiful and worth the time. One other thing we like to do on Friday afternoon during non-ski months is take the gondola ride up the top of the ski hill at Keystone and view miles around from up above. Ride is free on Starting Friday afternoon and $20 per other times. They have open air food counter with variety of choices and we have eaten there. Friday there is a great farmers market we like to take in at Dillon

sorry forgot to say we never have time to visit quilt shops so can't help there.:D

we love Estes Park. When we were there a couple of years ago two of the quilt shops were closing. Hope more have opened since then. Go to Grand Lake and take the road across the pass into Estes Park. It may be closed if the snows have started. Beautiful part of the country and weather should be great.

Golden Area things of interest
 

Golden has a lovely quilt shop and the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum is also in Golden. While there you can also tour the Coors brewery and go walk along Clear Creek (The tubing and kayaking would be a little cold in October.). Along the creek is an open air history museum of buildings from gold rush times. There is a nice geology museum at the Colorado School of Mines. There is also the Colorado Railroad Museum a small distance out of town. There are lots of good restaurants as well. My favorite is Ali Baba's which serves Middle Eastern food. It is north of downtown on Highway 93.

There is also a nice drive along Virginia Gulch Road from Idaho Springs to Central City. Parts are gravel but it is an easy drive for any car and the views are beautiful.

My mother and I spent a night in Idaho Springs, and we took the time and drove up Mt. Evans. It was a highlight. The views were spectacular and the wildlife was awesome. I have pictures of the mountain goats at the car window, wanting their handouts!
