Ideas needed for teaching male teen sewing
My 19 year old grandson is coming to visit for a few days & I would like to teach him a sewing
machine project. I taught him basics of hand sewing such as sewing on a button & hemming pants when he was younger, but now I would like to have him learn to use the sewing machine. Any ideas for an easy project? Thanks. |
pillowcase or pillow cover, something he would use.

Good luck, not sure I could teach anyone to use a machine. My 6 Grands, male and female are determined to never sew anything.

He's 19 ... old enough to ask him what he would like to make while learning.
That is, if he wants to learn! By letting him be involved in the decision, he will be more committed to seeing the project through. Likewise, let him be involved in the choosing of the fabrics, whether it is at a store or from your stash. |
A pillowcase was my first thought. With all the different fabric out there for Super Heroes and such he can find something he might like.
I wouldn't push him - my eldest daughter has no intention of learning to sew. She just tells me I can never die. So someday she will either learn minor basics or pay to have it done. My other daughter can sew enough to do mending. They are both so busy - and they are both readers, they would sit down with a book before sitting down to sew. Just had another thought - if he is going off to college what about a laundry bag? |
Pillowcase is my first thought, tool
Second thought would be some sort of tote bag. Third thought - hemming a fleece type of throw. |
Will he be going off to college? If so (or even if not), what about a cover/carrier for a laptop (if he has one). Let him decide. If you push him to make something he's not really interested in he may never sew again. I agree about letting him choose the fabric (even if it's not to your liking). At 19 he should pick up the sewing machine part rather quickly.

A cell phone stand might appeal to a 19yo. The cell phone stand is a beanbag type thing that you can set a phone or Ipad up on a desk. They are pretty cool. I made them for my adult children one Christmas.
