Ikea Quality?

I need some storage units, shelves, cabinets ect. I love our home, but it has no storage! We haven't been really able to unpack all our boxes after we moved last year and I'm sick of packing boxes in my living room. I would love to have them gone by Thanksgiving! (Rant over!:D)

I was looking at Ikea online and their products have affordable prices, but I'm wondering how is the quality. I don't want anything made from matchstickes. Has anyone here bought Ikea products and are you pleased with it? I would love to hear the good and the bad!

Very near me in Renton is the largest Ikea, it used to be the largest in the World but I don't know the current standards. Happens the DDiL works there too.

I've been getting things from Ikea since it opened and many of them are still with me. They are sturdy but most are not investment pieces and they often don't move well once assembled.

My corner desk is Ikea as are my CD cabinets, cabinets are at least 20 years old. I've had bookcases. I know I've had other things but none are jumping out at me right now. When I was looking at redoing my kitchen I was suitably impressed by their cabinets in style, cost, function, and materials. In parts of Europe kitchens are not built in as they typically are in the US but made with modular units.

Edit: For my sewing room storage I went with the metal rolling type racks from Costco. The closet in my sewing room is full of long term storage items (some of which are on the to-go list!) like sleeping bags and things and so there is no room for my fabric and I still have to periodically go into that closet. Unless you like the industrial look, Ikea furniture is a lot easier to tuck into a hallway or whatever.

I have been looking at their book cases. Check the inside depth of the shelves if you want to store fabric. I ruler fold so need to find ones where the shelves are at least 12 inches deep inside.

I may consider metal storage cabinets instead. There are some that have thin clear windows in them. Easy to see contents.

Most of the furniture in my home is from Ikea. My sewing room is almost all Ikea. (All adults in my home. My grandchildren live out of state.) I think it is durable and affordable for the most part. But, my DH and Son work for a moving company. Ikea furniture is not manufactured to be moved around a lot. Make sure you empty it out if you have to move it. Also, heed the warnings on Ikea furniture. Anchor it to the wall. Some of their pieces can be "tippy" and they have had accidents and deaths. I can tell you when you get the pieces all put together, they are solid.

We have some IKEA furniture we have assembled and are happy with it. No issues - and I have an IKEA kitchen which I love. We moved very close to an IKEA so I walk through it on a regular basis just to look.

I have some Ikea bookshelves I bought for the study of our last house. Then we moved and the study had built ins so I moved the bookcases to my sewing room. They look nice and have held up better than I expected them to. I've had mine over 20 years now, but they don't get hard usage.

Mumto2 10-30-2019 04:47 PM

We have recently gotten rid of some IKEA bookshelves that were worn out, that said they served us well. Homeschooling family, so those shelves were always completely stuffed full of heavy books. They were moved. I got 13 years of use out of them for less than $100. No complaints.

One of the Billy Bookcases survived......never loaded it as excessively. It was in my daughter’s bedroom.

sewbizgirl 10-30-2019 05:03 PM

It's good stuff and they have lots of great storage options. As IceBlossom said, the Ikea furniture is not investment pieces. But treated well, it will serve you well. Their stuff has clean modern lines. Most of it goes with anything. I have the black bookcases for my sewing supplies, and an Ikea couch I love. My daughter has an entire Ikea kitchen and it is wonderful.

ladyinpurple135 10-30-2019 06:07 PM

I have two large Billy bookcases and they are stuffed (sometimes double shelved) with ,y regular reading books. and I can tell you the shelves are very sturdy, even with all that weight. The previous shelves were bowing before we got the ones from Ikea to replace the cheaper ones - which are now in the garage. My son has several pieces of furniture I bought him when he moved to Kirkland, WA after law school in 2009. The dining table and chairs are now jn Aurora, CO with wife, son and new daughter and are still in super condition. He also has a dresses and night stands. I love Ikea and get down to the one in Charlotte as often as I can. I’m looking at more bookshelves when I rearrange the master bedroom and I would not hesitate to buy anything from them.

Thank you for your honest reviews, ladies! I am excited! I'll be buying some furniture from Ikea now.

zozee 10-30-2019 09:11 PM

You can’t go wrong. It will last longer than you may want it to! By that I mean, you may eventually want a different style or something that doesn’t scream IKEA, but IKEA furniture lasts and lasts and you may feel guilty for upgrading. LOL Most of my sewing room is white IKEA pieces and I do like the clean lines.

As mentioned above, anchor the bookshelves to the walls. Don’t overload them and don’t try to move them without unloading them. The joints will come apart.

And watch out for Sharpies. Apparently my youngest at age 3 thought his bookshelf was a dry erase board.

quiltingcandy 10-30-2019 09:30 PM

My embroidery thread cabinet is from IKEA and I love it! It is on wheels so I can move it around without unloading it. My daughter left a tall bedroom cabinet that I use for storing projects and ironing items and sprays. She also left behind a tall book case type cabinet - it's too deep to be a book case - so it's more of a very large knick knack cabinet. It's been wonderful next to my sewing machine holding items I need while working at the machine. She still has a lot of her things on it too. But it's great for my sewing baskets and other items I like to display. Her items are over 20 years old and going strong.

sewingsuz 10-30-2019 09:42 PM

Talk about not moving them, you got it! I have a complete wall in my sewing room of Ikea cabinets with frosted glass doors and A mirrored door on the middle cabinet. The back of one of the cabinets is loose and I cannot do anything about it. I love the cabinets and I have had them for about 12 yrs.

We stayed at an apartment in Lisbon where the entire place was filled with Ikea furniture. It seemed very sturdy. And it looked so nice having everything white and clean-lined. If I was going to re-do my sewing room,I would consider using all Ikea units.

SusieQOH 10-31-2019 06:18 AM

I've never heard anything about poor quality from people I know who buy Ikea.

NZ- my parents home is very old- 1800's and no storage. People back then didn't have all the stuff we have!!

Love the KC Ikea store... go hungry. Sweedish meatballs and lingenberry sauce and many other goodies. Store has maps and how longers ( meauring tapes) and pads and pencils for you to write your item numbers. Treasures everywhere. Kids areas too. Parking is under the store on the West side. Big carts availabe to take things to your vehicle. I once went in a nearly empty school bus. I wanted to fill it.

oh more food. hot dogs and pretzels on the way out.

i love this. I am in the underground parking garage of the IKEA near me and had Swedish pancakes for breakfast and found some things I am happy to have. Didn’t spend all that much $$ either. And - got some steps in!!

I have two Billy book cases that were bought at Ikea over 30 years ago. The white surface is looking a bit dingy, but they are as solid as the day we assembled them. I have Pax Wardrobes for about 10 years and I love how I can reconfigure them to meet my current needs. We had 6 folding chairs in the cottage about in 1989 that have recently developed cracks in the seat backs. Two are still in good shape. The cottage is a rental, so they have seen lots of use and abuse.

More recently I bought a unfinished pine shelf. I cannot remember the name of it, but it is not Ivor. I painted it and it perfectly fits two Iris scrap booking cases side by side on the shelves. My son has a modular desk and drawers that is holding up well after 5 years.

I have not found that their "office' chairs are sturdy enough for all day use. The bolts get loose and eventually the threads strip. I will not buy one again.

I have a kitchen sink unit and the sink from Ikea that are about 15 years old, no issues.

We had a dresser in the cottage that after 30 years, the drawers needed repairs. I got tired of repairing it 2 years ago and replaces it with another one.

We have the older version of Kallix cube shelves that are great. I bought some to make a new cutting table. It is on the project list.

We put Ikea butcher block counter tops in Dad's house. That was a mistake, as he is incapable of keeping them clean and oiled. They no longer sell that type. There were 100% solid wood.

My brother and his wife put an Ikea kitchen into their home. They had a cabinet maker face the cabinets, so they are 'custom'.

Oh, this sounds like we need to make a family outing of it!

We have a new ICIKea here in Live Oak and it is so big I can not go because I don't walk well anymore but every one I hear loves it. They say the food and the chocolate are out of this world.

I too, have several storage pieces from Ikea in my sewing studio. Inexpensive, easy to assemble and great selection of sizes and types of units.

My favorite is the 6 Or 7 drawer unit on casters that measures about 26” high and 19” deep.

MariaM 11-02-2019 10:29 PM

We have several IKEA pieces in our house. Some newer and some about 30 years old. Our Billy bookcases have been moved at least four times and have not suffered any issues. What may have helped is that when we put them together, we used wood glue along the edges and on each of the dowels used to construct them. They are very solid.
