I'm now certified!

Whoo Hoo! I just went to a training class at my local animal shelter and I'm now certified to work with the animals. I have been waiting with baited breath for today. I will be with the cats.

Does anyone esle volunteer?

crafty pat 08-03-2013 09:30 AM

Bless you for working with the animals who have been treated so poorly. I am sure you will give them the love they need so much.

Cogito 08-03-2013 09:40 AM

Good for you! I did that a couple of years ago....it is wonderful to give the animals your love and attention.

Monika 08-03-2013 10:05 AM

Good for you!!! One of my friends volunteers at our local shelter. I make pet beds with my scraps and give them to her to take into the cats and small dogs.

luvstoquilt 08-03-2013 11:15 AM

I don't dare...I would bring them all home. I donate money, coupons, etc. and my last 3 dogs were all rescues. Peach was left in the park as a baby to die...my vet said he wouldn't have lasted more than a couple more days...He is just fine now for sure!

nivosum 08-03-2013 11:21 AM

My son has said many times that he believes that animals are truly the innocent ones.

Tartan 08-03-2013 11:24 AM

Congratulations! I've been told I am "certifiable" sometimes but certified is much better!:D

Misty's Mom 08-03-2013 11:50 AM

Congratulations! I'm sure you'll be great

mighty 08-03-2013 01:19 PM

Congrats what an awesome job!!!

sewnsewer2 08-03-2013 01:37 PM

All 4 of my cats are adopted. I love animals, but especially cats, I speak their language better. :)

Nammie to 7 08-03-2013 02:05 PM

I'm sure your help will be very much appreciated - I have 7 cats - all are rescues - we have feral cats on our ranch and the hurt kittens seem to find their way to our back door!

nativetexan 08-03-2013 04:17 PM

I see many, many cats in your future. My SIL in Wyoming worked at a shelter and adopted two cats. Each had six toes. I have three cats and if I did work at a shelter I'd be out of house and home trying to take in more.

pocoellie 08-03-2013 06:24 PM

I've found a couple gals to help me make pet beds, I also make at least 1 quilt a year for a fund raising raffle, I've fostered three dogs while they were waiting to be adopted but told my girls(dogs) I wouldn't foster any more for right now I will/have also volunteered in the local Humane Society thrift store, but I really don't think I could work with the animals, because I would have to bring them all home. Congratulations on becoming certified to work with the animals though.

Mariposa 08-03-2013 06:28 PM

Congrats! You have a great heart to want to do this!

Good for you!!!! Bless you for taking an interest in wanting to help your shelter. Our shelter would be in a world of hurt if it wasn't for all the volunteers!

My other half volunteers at our local animal shelter and we foster quite frequently. Because I am a vet tech, we seem to get the poor dears that are sick or recovering or have ongoing chronic medical issues. We will be getting a beagle next week that is undergoing treatment for a heavy load of heart worm and contracted pneumonia after her first injection. We were supposed to get her earlier this week but our 15 yo Pomeranian was ill and we needed to fix him first! We really enjoy helping the animals and being able to shower these "throw aways" with love and attention while prepping them for their furever homes!

If I could, I'd take care of all the strays! I have a lot of love and compassion to give to animals. Bless you Ruth, I'd love to help the vet but unfortunately, all I'd do is cry or pass out because I'm afraid of needles!!

Bless you for volunteering with the cats, very loving of you. I hope all of them you work with find kind and loving homes.

AZ Jane 08-04-2013 08:34 AM

Just think what a wonderful world we would have if each just gave a little to a cause, any cause. Thank you foe working with the animals, like a lot of others I have a hard time working directly with them. But do volunteer a day a week working at the local animal thrift store.

Dolphyngyrl 08-04-2013 08:42 AM

I don't volunteer but I work for shelter, be prepared for a lot of work. It has been the most exhausting job I have ever had.

llong0233 08-04-2013 09:18 AM

Oh my gosh, congratulations! You are very brave to do that.

I am! :o
And I know I will love every minute of it!

All 4 of my dogs are pound puppies.

CAS49OR 08-04-2013 02:32 PM

I did, then realized I'd have to work with cats, I'm allergic to cats.

TnBecky 08-04-2013 02:36 PM

Congratulations. Like someone else said, I could never do it because I would be bringing them all home. I wish you many rewarding happy days ahead.

I got to choose if I wanted to work with cats or dogs or both. I'm alergic to some cats too, but I take singular because I am allergic to one of my own! I'll be ok, because I was in the room with them for an hour and had no problems.

nancia 08-04-2013 11:52 PM

i triedd to but they needed me to crawl around and clean cages. not a good match with my abilities. so now i make cat and dog blankets out of fleece and donate them to the shelter.

quiltmom04 08-05-2013 06:47 AM

Yes, I walk and socialize dogs at the local SPCA. I love it! I've gotten to know pit bulls, a kind of dog I would have been scared of before, but the ones I've met are just big sweeties! Strong, yes, but adorable!
So many people ask me how I can do it - because so many cases are heartbreaking, and how can I not want to take every dog home. ( Boy, would I love to!) My answer is that if I can give one dog an extra hour out of his cage, or a loving hand to pet or brush him, he's much better off and so am I!

cherrio 08-05-2013 06:50 AM

Ditto! and I have papers to prove it. haha yes, I make pet beds and drop off bags of food when I can and have sewn dog and kitty coats and blankets for the kennals. a real feel good cause.

My hats off to you! I wish I could.. but I can't even walk in to a shelter .. or all of them would come home with me.

craftynell 08-05-2013 11:14 AM

Good for you. I couldn't do that because I would want to bring them all home.

jarenie 08-05-2013 11:31 AM

I have been training for a 10 K run and have only small older rescue fur children. I have been walking (they have been running me) at the NSPCA and they love it as much as I do. Some of the dogs have been there a while and when they see me they get so excited. We are also working on 'Stop' - 'Sit' - ‘Wait’ I think I have more fun than they do.
As a quilter and knowing a lot of quilters. I gather the leftovers of batting and fabric from the quilts and make dog beds for the small fur children at the NSPCA.
With so many of them needing just a lot of love. I have plenty to give and all of you who Adopt and help at the shelters across the country.
I salute you.

Lynnc 08-05-2013 12:44 PM

I am a kitten foster parent. We take in kittens and raise them long enough to reach 2 1/2 lbs so then can be "fixed" before they are adopted out. I love doing it because we can play with them, learn their personalities and list it on their paperwork. So when people look to adopt they have an idea if they are quiet and like being held or more playful. Yes I do get attached.

Congratulations! My granddaughter started off doing the same here in Scotland and is now a proud permanent employee and absolutely loves her job. You must have lots of love to give too.

sewnsewer2 08-05-2013 02:25 PM

Thank you to all those who help out when and where ever you can for these fur babies! It's good to know there are a lot of us out there.

caspharm 08-05-2013 02:34 PM

Congrats! I volunteered at the city animal shelter ages ago as part of a high school class.

Jingle 08-06-2013 02:07 PM

I could not do that, I took in four kittens over several years. Two were feral, two dumped. I got my avatar dog from Humane Society. Won't do that again, just someone's screw ups. I have a very hard time going around those places. I couldn't bring them all home.
