Am I the only one who detests informercials?
I have trouble sleeping so I turn on the TV for company. It seems that's about all there is on TV after midnight.

These are the things that drive me crazy--
1. why are there so many australians hosting them?
They're taped in the USA (I love Aussies, btw. But I'm curious about why they do all the hosting?)
2. Shouting. I'm not deaf.
3. The lady hosts all wear dresses cut down to there.
Seeing bosoms isn't going to make me buy anything. It just makes me think you want to distract people from really paying attention to your offer.
4. They always say "It's only 3 payments of..." or "its only 4 payments of $99.99 and if you call in 20 min. we'll take off one payment".
I can do the math. Why are they embarrassed to just tell me the total?
Oh for the good old days of reruns on all channels all night. Or even the test pattern!

preach on!!!!

MadQuilter 09-20-2010 02:39 PM

Get pay-per-view channels or plop in a movie. Odds are you will see lots of bosoms and yelling after midnight in the movies too.

Funny - I asked DH the same question last night: Why are all those loud Aussies peddling crap on US TV? I guess we are supposed to find the accent impossible to resist. HA! I could also resist Billy May's yelling.

ptquilts 09-20-2010 02:42 PM

and where do they get that audience of idiots who sit there enraptured, applauding and nodding their heads, like,

"yes, this new strawberry seed remover will CHANGE MY LIFE!!!"

woody 09-20-2010 02:44 PM

Funny, the informercials we get here in Australia seem to have either Americans or the English trying to sell us something. Maybe they think you will pay more attention to a different accent.
Either way they are annoying!!!!

I had to laugh too   as that is what I was going to say that mostly we get Americans and yes it is annoying!

amandasgramma 09-20-2010 03:03 PM

What a HOOT!!! I can just see the meeting with the marketing director......everyone hunched over a big table and him saying "now, see, here's how we do it. We irritate them until they're idiotic, we scream at them until they can't stand it, we have the hawker talk in a language juuuuust a little different from their homeland, and MAYBE we'll sucker them in to just shut us up"!!!! ROL! :hunf:

ptquilts 09-20-2010 03:20 PM

I think it all started with that big blond Aussie guy who yelled
"OYYY!!" - anyone remember him? Funny, I can't remember what the ad was for..

Sadiemae 09-20-2010 03:25 PM

Montel, can't you make a new Infomercial???

They play the same ones over and over and over a million times. Can't they record several????

(Didn't the man that did a lot of yelling die with drugs in his system? I could be waaaay off base, but I thought so.)

That's too funny.

I've noticed that some of the people in the audience are hosts of other informercials. (I told you I watch TV all night...and I've seen alot of these things...lol)
One of Ron Popiel's commercials has a blond lady in the audience who does them too. And I've seen one of the "chefs" sitting in an audience clapping and smiling.
Obviously they're paid to sit there and applaud. How exciting can it be to see a knife cut something? Or a blender blend?

Chasing Hawk 09-20-2010 04:10 PM

I can't stand that goofy looking smile those people have on the sunglasses infomercial.

The same dumb nod in the recording playback thingy. I could go on and on.....:P

janRN 09-20-2010 06:24 PM

How about the one for the hair straightening thingy and they all applaud after the chick uses it??? Duh, I use a curling iron most days and no one has clapped for me. (Oh I forgot--I'm not cute, 19 yrs old, with bosums that stand straight up!!)

Ditter43 09-20-2010 07:11 PM

I guess they think they will wear us down eventually. My DH said last night he wouldn't buy anything Billy Mays was screaming about. Heart disease was listed as the "primary cause of death" and cocaine was listed as a "contributory cause of death." His commercials were so irritating I would mute the t.v. when they were on.

wolfkitty 09-20-2010 07:17 PM

I REFUSE to watch or listen to them. I like the company of TV, but I prefer silence to that garbage.

stitchinwitch 09-20-2010 07:43 PM

OR the item is only 39.95 - BUT WAIT!!call within the next 10 minutes and it will be only 29.95 - but we're not done yet! If you call right away, we will DOUBLE your order and you just pay extra for shipping------------you call and ask how much shipping is, and by gunny - the shipping costs more than the items!!

But listen carefully and it says shipping and handling. That is where they make money--on the handling, not the shipping. They are all dishonest as far as I am concerned!

what I don't understand are the weight loss programs. Once we got the big screen I noticed (okay-could finally see) the fine print: they all say "results not typical". So, what are typical results?

Me too. I just have broadcast TV but get quite a few channels. When nothing's on except infomercials, either the TV goes off or a movie goes in. I'd rather watch Qubo cartoons than any infomercials.

purplefiend 09-20-2010 09:13 PM

Do you mean Billy Mays? He was apparently a coke addict.
He died of a heart attack from too much cocaine

They all say that now because they are forced to. It wasn't by their choice!

I muted my tv too when he came on. After he died, his partner (an Australian? lol) said he shouted during his infomercials on purpose.
And I must be getting older than I realize. Some of the things they are selling now were "new" 30 or 40 years ago. The slap chopper was out in the '60s! I had one when I got married...but it was called something else back then.

stitchinwitch 09-21-2010 03:02 AM

What are typical results? Probably 5 pounds in one month

ptquilts 09-21-2010 06:00 AM

typical results are, you say
"I lost 10 pounds"

ANd DH says,

"If you look behind you, you'll find it."

Was it the great Veg-o-Matic??

No the veg-o-matic was something else, but I'd forgotten about it! I had one of them too. You'd lift the top, put a potato or onion inside on top of a selected type of blade, and then push the top down. It could make french fries etc. It actually worked pretty well.
