Inkjet or what?
 

I have tried to print color fast labels for my quilts but the print washes away. What type of printer will print color fast?

My SIL researched printers when she needed a new one for her quilting business. She bought an Epson as the ink is supposed to be more permanent. :)

Inkjet is the one to use. I have an HP all-in-one (which according to my SIL is old, but it still works so why change?).

I've got a Canon inkjet and print all my labels with it without problem. You might want to google "printers for printing on fabric" and see if that comes up with anything. You will want an inkjet, though. Lasers won't print on fabric (and can cause a fire if you try!)

You need an Inkjet (not a laser) but you also need to prep the fabric first so the ink sets and stays. You can purchase pre-treated fabric in sheets, or the chemical treatment and treat your own fabric (which is what I do).

The chemical treatment is called BubbleJet Set 2000 and you can get it here ....

it's important to note that "some" black ink in ink jets WILL set without the chemical treatment (because its actually dye, not pigment ink). But it ONLY the black ... not the color. So if you only want to print in black and you have an inkjet ... give it a try and see if it sets in the fabric before you spend $$ on the chemicals you may not need.

How do you treat the label when you print it? I use an inkjet printer, and only load one sheet at a time, and as soon as the sheet comes out of the printer I allow the ink to dry or 5-10 minutes remove the paper backing, then I use a DRY hot iron and carefully press the label to set the ink. Then I dip the label in cold water to saturate the fabric and carefully iron it dry, to set the color. I use June Taylor sheets-because these are the ones my printer prefers. My printer will not take the Printed Treasures brand-I spent big bucks on those when I was printing pics for my kids memory quilts and wasted several because my printer would not take them- I think they are too thick. I hope this works for you- Be sure you get the pkg. that says washable she also has dry cleanable sheets. The instructions says NOT to put in a dryer or use fabric softener.

For labels, I print on an HP inkjet. I iron a piece of fabric to a piece of freezer paper, cut to 8.5 x 11 and fold a piece of scotch tape across the top. I fingernail press a crease the tape at the top of the paper/fabric so it goes through the printer easily. Then I iron over the printed area. That seems to set the ink for me. I ran a sample under water to test and it didn't fade nor run. For photos, I pretty much follow how Gerbie does it. Good luck.

I have a HP 6500 all-in-one. I used the prepared fabric sheets. Nothing I did could save the ink. It washed out every time. After upwards of $100 on various products I gave up.

How about trying the iron on transfer sheets from Avery. I've used those for labels. You just need to remember to reverse everything before you print. Then follow the directions to iron on the fabric.
