Ipad world

I just wanted to share my experience about my ipad. I got an ipad for christmas. But until now, i was not doing anything else with it but what i was doing in my computer. That is checking my sites, emails and googling.
Lately, i ventured to the world of the App store. Amazingly, found lot of educational things FOR FREE. (But still need be aware of those who sneak in for you to purchase.)
the app i am enjoying with while quilting is the (free ) pandora. Selective favorite musics.
favorite vocabulary learning is LSATSKY.

Does anyone else have a favorite they like to share.? I am dilettante to the ipad world.

Dragonomine 01-18-2013 05:32 AM

I LOVE Pandora! I use it a lot. I also play games on Pogo. Lots of time wasters there. lol Then I browse on Etsy to see what crafty things are going for and Pinterest for recipes and DIY ideas and of course facebook. There are a lot of free apps everywhere!

(hope I didn't break any rules for naming a few sites)

Tartan 01-18-2013 06:29 AM

I have the Missouri Star Quilt Ap on my iPad. It lets me watch Jenny's videos faster and I love it. I play Words with friends and of course use it for QB. I can take pictures of my sewing with my iPad and easily post them on QB too (something I could not do on my regular computer)

I have an app for my bank, the local library, games for my grandkids to play. I use Twitter, actually get a lot of news from there. If you have a Kindle there are apps for the iPad and iPhone both. There are free apps for logging food and exercise if you do that.

Maggiemay 01-18-2013 07:44 AM

One of my favorite apps is "Overdrive". You can check out digital books from your library & download them to your IPad for the lending period. You need a library card to use it. I also take screen shots of recipes & quilts & make albums out of them in the photos section. This way when you want to see them you don't need Internet access like you do with different recipe sites & Pinterest.

nativetexan 01-18-2013 07:52 AM

since the pics posted with phones or Ipads show up here on their sides, would it change things if you took the photo sideways so it would show right side up in here? Just wondering. they should fix that some day.

Tartan 01-18-2013 08:51 AM

For pictures to show up on QB the right way, you take the picture with the iPad horizontal not vertical. It puts the picture in your camera roll. You open a new thread, type in your text and click on the tiny paper clip to manage attachments. The little box will come up and you choose from existing, click on the picture from your camera roll, click upload, click submit and voila!

sewmany 01-18-2013 07:54 PM

Wow just download some suggest apps. Thank you. Will be trying posting pictures in QB.

TanyaL 01-19-2013 05:22 AM

my favorite thing is to have my Kindle books sent to my Ipad. The screen is so much larger on the Ipad that I prefer reading on it more than on my Ipad. I also like watch Netflix on it when sports is on the TVs in the house.

RIDGEFIELD 01-20-2013 06:23 AM

A couple of favorites of mine are Quilt Calculator and Block Fab-HD.

Tartan, how did you find the Missouri Star Quilt app? It's not available on my iPad apps.

institches33 01-20-2013 07:29 AM

Download the "Apps for Free" app. It offers 7 -10 apps for free every day. Also search the app store for quilting apps. Amazing stuff. Check the library for free audio books to listen to while quilting. Anything on your Kindle can be seen on your Ipad with ICloud. Experiment and have fun.

Lyncat 01-20-2013 07:29 AM

I watch Sewing With Nancy episodes on PBS and I listen to podcasts of my nephew's online radio show, Life at 12.

HOW does it broadcast it faster? Are the words and video running at a faster rate?

Alexandra 01-20-2013 08:25 AM

I have the Bernina series on my ipad. That way I can watch the videos while I play with my new Bernina.

Tartan 01-20-2013 08:28 AM

When I try to watch YouTube videos on my iPad it takes quite a while to load. I don't know why it is faster with the App, it just is. As for finding the App, I will ask my tech person later today.

Milli 01-20-2013 08:30 AM

Same here and I love Pinterest for searching sewing!
i love my iPad also for FaceTime, we keep in touch with my In-laws , daughters and other family members.

I love "One Place". I listen to wonderful teachings while I knit or quilt.

namom5 01-20-2013 11:00 AM

How did you find the Missouri Star App for the IPad? I searched and came up with no results. By the way, I love my IPad...

Yes, I understand about the free apps. But my kids said "Really, Mom, most of those things are less than $5 -NOT $50! These apps are what make your iPad so functional!" So, I'm trying to ease up and spend a couple of bucks now and again for cool apps. Just sayin'!

tenngal 01-20-2013 02:01 PM

I'm so far behind with all this tech stuff - guess this old dog can't learn new tricks.......

BellaBoo 01-20-2013 04:10 PM

I gave my IPad to my granddaughter and use my Kindle Fire. It does everything I want. Movies, tv, music, all the apps I want, books, pdf files, and quilt videos. It cost nothing per month as it connects to my home wi fi. I love the new technology. I try to keep up with the basic. Pixel of Ink has free Kindle books every day, Amazon has a paid app once a day for free. Every channel on our cable tv will play on the Kindle with the app from the cable company. Sometimes I stop and think imagine this!

quiltnut4ever 01-20-2013 04:11 PM

I'm saving my money for one myself! My dd got one for her graduation from college from her dad (we're divorced) and at work several of my coworkers have them. I could use one of those....but great ideas of the apps! Thanks for the info!

Wow BellaBoo, your granddaughter is a lucky girl! What a thoughtful thing to do.
I have both the iPad and the Kindle Fire. I like the iPad (which works with wifi like the Fire) better most of the time, because of the size of the screen, and I LOVE the camera. It takes beautiful pictures that I can print immediately through my Walgreens app. I also love my Kindle Fire for when I'm on the road as its easier to put in my purse. I especially like that the iPad and Kindle Fire work together with all the books I have. I have tons of reading material, and in the year I've had the Kindle, I have only paid for ONE book! All the rest I have found online, I get three emails a day with all the free books available for that time. I would have a hard time giving either of them up!

Nancygeddes 01-20-2013 05:33 PM

I read kindle & e-books on my mac as well as kindle, I love to listen to clark howard while quilting, I have been a mac user for years and my next big splurge is the i-pad. Congrats. on ur new toy.

mimiknoxtaylor 01-21-2013 04:31 AM

I've had my ipad for 1 year & learn something new on it everyday. My favorite apps are Pandora and Pinterest. Would like to find Missouri Star. Will search in a little while

I keep trying with no luck. Even in the app store it comes up in a search but when you click on it it says, "no result"

ginnie6 01-21-2013 05:10 AM

I found it on Google Play for my Android tablet!

That'll work just as well. Thank you

nstitches4u 01-21-2013 10:01 AM

There are several quilt apps available. Some of them free---others for little cost. I especially like the free Quilt Shop Locator from QCA. You can find quilt shops when you travel. DH threatened to take my iPad away from me. lol

Videos play better (without delays and starting and stopping) when I use Google Chrome instead of Safari for my browser on my iPad. Also, if the video does stop, you can restart the video and the buffer will stay ahead of the player and it will play without a hitch.

I WON an iPad in Dec. A teacher friend at my school was selling raffle tickets for her HS kids and, lo and behold....I won!!! That said...I just took it out of the box the other day and haven't really done anything with it. I have my school issued iPad, as well, so I am familiar with the possibilities...just have had other things going on so haven't really used it. But, I got some very good ideas from reading all the comments on this thread, so thanks, everybody!

I don't have it, but a friend does & scans items that automatically compare to Amazon price. I think he keeps Amazon in business!!
