IRS Scam
I worked for the IRS for several years.
1. They will never call you. 2. They will send you a letter to the address on your tax return. 3. If you get a call saying they are from the IRS and this is your final notice. Do Not Say Anything> Hang Up 4 This is a SCAM and the number that comes across on your phone is not the number they are calling from. |
It seems like this one comes back around every couple years. I got a couple of these calls a few weeks back. I wasn't home and ignored them but they are kind of annoying.
|
we got called twice in one day a couple of weeks ago.
|
I get recordings and a number to call back. I would love to get a real person. I would ask if I will be sent to federal prison, as I hear they get cable there and have a gym, and I can't afford cable or gym membership on my income. When can they come get me?? Wonder if they will hang up?
|
My DH and I rec'd a letter in the mail yrs ago from the IRS about our return. It did come registered. They had the nerve to ask for our phone number. I kept sending them what they wanted by mail until I got tired of it,then I called them. I wouldn't give them my number because at the time we both worked 11 to 7,and if they had called us I probably would have agreed that we owed them money.
|
Thank you for confirming! They have been calling me daily at least twice. It's making me crazy.
|
Got that call a few weeks ago and posted about it!
|
Hubs has been getting these calls repeatedly on a daily basis (multiple calls/day) for the last several day on his cell. He calls them back and they keep asking who he is. He does not give out any info - as no one should. It's probably the same folks who've left 2 messages on the home answering machine that I've not yet bothered to listen. No familiar numbers in our recent call list at home so it's either the IRS scam or politicians - neither of which I have an interest.

Also I do not believe the NY State Police have my email address. I have gotten messages "from them". Yeah right.
|
I have been getting these calls for the last two weeks. I got tried of them!!!! So I finally told the person that the next time they called I was taking down the number and taking to our Sub Station or Police Dept. They have a fraud (or scam dept). They haven't call in 3 days.

There is another scam where they call and claim to be from microsoft and need to fix your computer because the games installed had messed it up. I read in our local paper that someone allowed them access and they took over the computer and demanded $600 to "put it back". He paid. When I got the call I told the guy I was Googling the phone number and calling police as we were speaking. He says "no google, no google " and hung up. I suspect he was Pakistani or Indian from accent. Police department says don't answer any calls with unfamiliar numbers or numbers not in your cell phone.

Just the other day a got a call from my new dentist calling from another line. I added that one to my contacts and in the ID I added "line 2" to his name. If a number is not on my ID, it can go to voice mail. If it's that important they will leave a message. My niece lives near D.C. Of course I have her on caller ID. Anything else goes to voice mail. Anytime I call a number, I put it into my contacts. When they call, even if I've never spoken with them before and always put a word or two like "car CL" telling me about a car on Craigslist or such. You can always go back and edit.

Thank you for posting this == I get a few calls like this and just hang up but they are scary!!
|
Seems our tax depts. have gotten together because we get the same sort of calls north of the border. Plus I have received several emails from various banks and institutions telling me that my accounts have been locked. Gee, my memory is getting really bad because I don't remember ever opening accounts with any of these companies.  ;)
The one I really hate is the one from Paypal because many of us do use it and it looks very very real. Never EVER click on the link in the email. If it actually was from Paypal, it would never have a link but would ask you to log on to your account using a separate window. |
I retired from IRS. Sometimes they do call but not for asking you to wire money. Interestingly, I just had two calls yesterday. I answered the first and it was a recording telling me that I was being sued by IRS. I hung up and five minutes later I got another call, with different area code, and same recording. Unfortunately the prey on the senior citizens who tend to get panicky and do whatever they say.
|
Our local paper said to notify authorities when you get a call. I received my first this week. If they call again I will contact our local police so they know the scammers are targeting this area again.

Need to watch out for the ones that request bond money to get someone you know out of jail or to pay for their clinic bill that is out of the country.
|
If I don't recognize the name or number, I let it go to voicemail. If I am suspicious about a number, I google it. Oftentimes, you will see many postings that indicate it is a scam.

A friend of mine was getting these calls and they never leave a message. The machine would pick up they would hang up and instantly redial her. The other day ago they started the marathon calling again while she was on the cell with her DD's school. DD just turned 14 and she is quite the drama queen and wants to argue about any and all things. Well she finally got off the cell and decided to shut up the land line caller. The caller ID'd himself as an IRS agent and started telling her she owed thousands of dollars. They were going to take her house and car and bank accts. She very calmly told him I rent this place-my truck is 20 yrs old and in the shop not worth the repair charge my bank acct is in arrears and the only other thing I have that is worth any thing is a mouthy 14 yr old and right now you can come get it all. She hasn't heard from them again. She thinks the threat of a mouthy teenager scared them the most. I use to get the same calls and I just started the conversation with 'This call is being recorded' I haven't gotten a call from these people since May

Absolutely the way to do it. In FL, we are besieged with scams. If we don't know the caller shown on caller ID, we don't answer. We especially don't answer when it says, "blocked caller ID." Anyone can leave a message. If we feel like it, we'll get back to them. Who ever said the phone has to be answered? I pay for it and will answer if I know who's calling and I want to talk then. Period.

Sunday afternoon is my digital clean up time. I run a security scan on my computers, back up the hard drive the main computer and visit the "do not call" registry and list all the telemarketer or scam calls I've received that week. By doing that the calls have dropped from a couple of dozen a week to less than 4. It doesn't take that much time and does show results.

I've been getting those calls since May. They leave threatening voice mails about arrest warrants, bring my attorney and money or else. I googled and found that the IRS and FTC now have online reporting pages. They are serious about stopping these guys. Here is the link to the latest article and the reporting info is all the way to the bottom of the page. You can report online or call it in. I reported the last call to both the IRS and FTC as the page suggested. Just copy and paste the link into your browser if it isn't clickable or you can google IRS scam and click the link with irs.gov. Don't click on a .com link because it won't actually be the government website if you do.

I have gotten this call quiet a few times. I usually hang up, but once I kept listening and a human got on the call, I asked for the IRS ID#, they hung up on me. SCAM all the way.

I get lots of calls from the microsoft people. I love to interrupt their spiel with comments such as: How's the weather where you are? You have a lovely name or earrings. Anything to throw them off.
When we get to the part of pushing the ms key and a letter key I pretend to do that and they want to know if a box comes up. I say yes. Then I tell them the box says WARNING someone is trying to break into your computer! They are usually stunned and don't know what to say. Sometimes I say some idiot or some bad word just to make it personal for them. The last lady I talked to a couple of days ago told me I was sick and needed to see a doctor then she hung up on me! I figure I am just doing a good deed by keeping them from making calls while wasting their time with me! I really need to get a life! :D The seniors I know (and I am one) are no more gullible that the general population. We have computers and know how to use them! |
Yes the calls are coming in. My Daughter's boss called them back on the number given. She spent the day hitting redial. each time they answered she would hang up and dial again. It took down their phone system a couple of time that day. These scumbags were telling her to stop doing that. She kept on. Then she started getting everyone else to do it. I call that fighting fire with fire.

These calls are not just annoying they can bring financial disaster especially for the elderly, folks with limited English language skills, or the mentally challenged. We attended a Senior Scam program just recently and it was scary the number of people who had fallen prey to these and other scams including ones claiming to be the police department, foreign consulates, etc. If you do not initiate the call, do not give any information, ask lots of questions and give NO personal information.
|
I have gotten this call at least 10 times. I love to listen to their spiel and when they get to the part where they say the federal agents will be sent within three hours, I say send them and hang up.
Please everyone be very careful about giving any information to anyone over the phone. Two days ago it was a call about a detected problem with my computer. I asked them what kind of computer I had. Foul language from the other end. |
Got a call in my cell phone today...uh...no

It seems this is right up there with my computer calling Microsoft for repairs scam and I am being sued and I need to call right away or they will arrest me or garnish my wages or some such things.
We get these calls, including the IRS scam frequently and in groups, then they stop for a while. I wish I knew how to get rid of them forever. |
The last time my BIL got the Microsoft call, he asked if they re-installed Windows. When they said yes, he said Good because his whole second floor needed new ones. They hung up.:D
|
My caller ID posts the place the call supposedly came from. Got one from Jamaica yest. Hung up on him.

The best thing any receiver of these scam IRS calls can do is to contact the Federal Trade Commission at 877-FTC-HELP. They will provide you with a reference number to give them every time you call back with info on yet another IRS scam call. Yes, it's a bit of a pain, but every bit of info we can provide, i.e., the number they called from, what they say to you and anything in the background you may hear/observe helps the FTC to track and shut them down.

I recently got 2 phone calls from my local area. They told me I owed $3000. I told them that was impossible. They stated that they had my current address. So I listened to see what else they said. I was told they could find me anywhere. Well the address was where I lived 5 yrs ago. I am retired and on SSD. Which I don't file taxes anymore. I then told them after the second time they called me to go ?S###. I know I wasn't polite but who cares. They were scammers. I know that due to the information they gave me, they were scamming me. They even threatened me by saying they were sending the cops after me. Ha Ha, the joke was on them.
