I didn't realize how much the price of ironing boards has raised..

Pppffft. That's just THAT website. You can get ironing boards at Target, Walmart and Sears, anywhere from $16 to $75. Of course, the fancier they are, the more expensive they are.

lynnie 09-09-2012 07:15 PM

Just think of the fab you could buy with that money

Neesie 09-09-2012 07:19 PM

Gracious alive!!!

tdgiffin 09-10-2012 02:50 AM

Is it embossed with gold? ha ha!

alwayslearning 09-10-2012 04:43 AM

I actually know someone who has one of those. No wonder she has no money!

I agree, I would not pay that much.

There's usually an abundance of ironing boards at Thrift Stores.
And at minimal prices!
Just check that they sit solid and are at the height you want.

Plus ... I would never have a narrow ended ironing board for quilting again.
Too awkward when pressing yardage or quilt tops.

A Thrift acquisition takes away the guilt of adding a piece of plywood to the top of an expensive new one to create the perfect quilter's pressing centre!

For that price it would have to include someone to do my ironing for me. May in Jersey

We saw an ironing system in Shipshewana this year that cost $2600 US. It was kind of a steam thing & puffed the board cover up when you went to press your pieces. Needless to say... I didn't stick around for the full presentation!

That sounds like the professional setups that dry cleaners have.

I was at Goodwill this afternoon and spotted several ironing boards, one of them a good sturdy one (not those flimsy T-legged ones, those always seem to get loosey-goosey), it was from Target, still in the packaging, and was $20. Not bad!

I have a 1968 Sears Roebuck Ironing board that has rarely been folded and put away. It has the mesh top and the most beautiful and still very shiny chrome legs. It's stable and heavy. When I see the prices on the new things they call ironing boards, I think mine will be worth a small fortune some day! Would be a shame to have one of those "never ironers" put it out for the trash collector when I am gone.

BETTY62 09-10-2012 08:37 PM

I would never spend that much money on something I don't enjoy doing. LOL

kuntryquilter 09-11-2012 03:28 AM

I bought an ironing board just like this at walmart for about half that price.

nygal 09-11-2012 03:40 AM

I haven't used a full size iron board in over 10 yrs.

Stitchit123 09-11-2012 05:26 AM

Oh my Its time to go to your nearest thrift store No matter how much you do or don't spend on an ironing board guess what-You still have to do the ironong

primbears 09-11-2012 07:00 AM

Like the thrift store idea, will have to watch so I can make a Big Board, thanks for the suggestion.

Steady Stiching 09-11-2012 07:05 AM

My son made me a quilting ironing table, One rectangle folding table from Walmart...one piece of plywood, batting, iron board fabric from Joann, staples....great big board, I can slide the plywood portion off to give me a corner for doing sleeve caps.

I hate thrift stores. They stink. And the stuff you buy from them stinks for ages. I have a small car and will happily order stuff on the internet so the nice man in the Big Brown Truck will bring it to my door. I bought my big board too. The nice man in the Big Brown Truck brought it to my house. Cover and all. I didn't have to go to a lumber yard. Hunt up a saw or glue or nails or anything. I just put the cover on it and started ironing.

Sheila_Newhouse 09-11-2012 08:32 AM

This one was the cheapest they showed, I have had mine just like that for years also.. no more than I use it, I don't think it will ever wear out..

wilburness 09-11-2012 12:40 PM

Whooa! that is a little on the high side. Mine is a hand me down from a couple of little old ladies, sisters, that were in their 80's. That was over 40 years ago. It is wellllll used still.

Me, too, and I think I paid $35 or $40 for it.

Glad I don't have to purchase one any time soon. Of course you can always shop thrift stores and yard sales.

ube quilting 09-11-2012 03:42 PM

Hey, I use a reliable iron and just love it. Has good weight without being to heavy and adjustable steam. I would bet it is an ironing board that would last several lifetimes. I like Reliabe products and I am not affiliated with them in any way except for using their product!

aorlflood 09-11-2012 03:58 PM

I would check out thrift stores. You are more likely to find an older, more steady ironing board. I bought mine for $5 at Goodwill and it is made with thicker metal...think ironing board from the 50-60's...and is much sturdier than any new one! :)

debbieoh 09-11-2012 05:41 PM

Must be made of some valuable metal

any time the word "system" is added, add 1-2 more zeros!

I still have my 2nd ironing board thats over 30 years old. Still is in good shape.

angelaz 09-11-2012 06:56 PM

My husband spotted a beautiful antique solid oak ironing board and bought it for me so that I would have one upstairs in my sewing room. He paid 35.00 for it. My other board is also an antique. They are very sturdy and I find being a short person that these are just the right height for me. The newer ones seem to be too high.

I didn't realize how much the price of ironing boards has raised..

Got mine from Walmart and it's almost identical. I love that it raises to counter hight. I can actually press without taking a ton of breaks, or pulling a chair up to the board. For $40 bucks.

Ruby the Quilter 09-11-2012 11:50 PM

It must also do the ironing!

ljptexas 09-12-2012 04:42 AM

Wow!!! I still have the metal 1 my hubby got at a garage sale yrs ago. It doesn't come out much at all anymore. My sweet Mama loved to iron (I hate it, I'd rather be piecing, sewing, etc). She used to stand & iron for the public when we were growing up. Charged $1.50 a doz (starched shirts & stiff jeans) just to give us little spending $. Now she's in nursing home & can't remember much. What we do for our kids!!!!
