I'm thinking of going somewhere to escape the cold January here in the midwest. We both just retired and are looking for someplace different. Any suggestions?? :-D

littlehud 12-06-2009 07:16 AM

I say this same thing every winter. I'm not retired yet so here I stay. I hope you find somewhere warm.

dakotamaid 12-06-2009 07:21 AM

Where in sw Iowa? I'm from Earlham up on I80

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 12-06-2009 07:24 AM

Carolina Beach, NC. Never super crowded. Good rates on rentals. Goregous place. Near Wilmington if you need some bigger town activities. Warm, but not hot.

Howdy from Council Bluffs!! Go to Texas...lots of space if you don't mind the heat/humidity.

amma 12-06-2009 11:44 AM

My dream would be to spend a winter staying a few days here, a week there...going from one warm region to another, then deciding where to snowbird to each year :D :D :D

Ninnie 12-06-2009 12:12 PM

I would head down to the gulf of Alabama!!!

There are different kinds of warmth, and different kinds of places.

If you want a nice, dry warmth, Arizona is wonderful. There are bargains to be had if you want to buy a condo. I like Tucson, which has a laid-back image. Lots of snowbird communities there. Scottsdale, a suburb of Phoenix, is very upscale. Sedona is very New Agey.

If you like 70 degrees and oceans, then maybe San Diego. Of course, California has a huge variety of warm, sunny places to choose from.

If you're okay with humidity, then Florida may be your mecca. It has all kinds of snowbird areas, from trailer parks to high rise apartment buildings. If you want a metro area, consider Miami.

You could come see me in Arkansas. We have the wood burning and the coffee on. Its about 40 right now. Not too cold.

This site is the best! We will be traveling with my brother and his wife so wherever we end up will be great. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas. Now to decide............... :D :D

I'm down I80 in Council Bluffs. Just across the river from Omaha.

amandasgramma 12-06-2009 07:40 PM

We're headed to Arizona.....but so far, it's no warmer than our home!!!!! We're in southern California and have been "RV" bound for 2 days because of wind!!! We'd move on, but the winds are too strong AND Arizona is getting the same cold front!

dakotamaid 12-06-2009 07:43 PM

It may be one of those winters, maybe we should stay at home with our new furnace and my quilts!!

SaraSewing 12-06-2009 07:52 PM

How cold does Iowa get where you live? Snow? Wind? Temps? I lived in Wyoming for 30 years, so I think southern utah is the BEST! Maybe a little snow 2 or 3 times for just a few hours, freezing sometimes, but usually sunny. AND it's Not crowded here!

Moonpi 12-07-2009 06:10 AM

Aw, come to Flor-id-duh!
We need your money. And there are great bargains this year because tourism is down so much. We may not have culture, but we've got palm trees!

bebe 12-07-2009 06:18 AM

Come to Texas and then we can visit and quilt together.

There are RV parks everywhere

We are in Sunbird, Arizona [in Chandler] they have rentals here, but we own a home and are Snowbirds from MN. There are a lot of communities in the PHX area that also have quilt groups that meet. Think about checking that out.

pocoellie 12-08-2009 08:35 AM

Certainly not here, -9 right now(8:40 a.m.)LOL

Boston1954 12-08-2009 10:27 AM

How far are you willing to travel? It is always temperate in Hawaii, but not everyone can afford to go. Certainly not me. I cannot even afford Tulsa. (128 miles) :-D

dakotamaid 12-08-2009 10:50 AM

It really varies as far as temp and cold and snow. Today and tomorrow is shaping up to be the blizzard of the decade here!! Up to 15 inches of snow expected here in central Iowa with 35-50 mph winds expected tomorrow! I'm thinking that we retired just in time. (this summer!)

Of course that is the exception. Usually, we get a snow every 2 weeks or so and temps in the 15-40 degree range, mostly 20s.

Happy Holidays.

bebe 12-08-2009 01:32 PM

It has been really cold lately. Good heat!!!!
