Jewellery and Chlorine
I have a 14k gold chain with a 1-carat cubic suspended. I have been wearing it for about 20 years, the last 10 years during water aerobics in a pool. Recently a prong broke off of the pendant. I took in for repair yesterday and the jeweller looked at it and asked me if I had been in chlorinated water. She said that chlorine doesn't bother gold but it does react with other metals blended in with the gold (bronze, copper, etc.) and weakens them. She told me never to go in a pool with any gold item on. I didn't know and was very thankful that it was a cubic and not a diamond. So, beware of going into swimming pools with your wedding rings!

Learned this the hard way! Was pooring bleach into washer when my daughter bumped me. Poured it straight on my rings. Black stuff started flaking off. Thankfully, a dear friend was a jeweler and she was able to treat the ring and it looked good as new!!!

....and when they say to use gloves when using CLR, do so!

Wow!! good to know. (also remove rings when mixing food in a bowl or kneading dough- cooks on t.v. do this, yuck!) I like my rings to stay clean.

chlorine pits gold. DON"T ever get mercury (from thermometers) on gold, it eats it .
a lady came in one day with her wedding ring in the bottom of her purse and a thermometer broke, there was nothing left but the diamonds and greyish mess of wrecked metal. |
I always remove my jewelry when at home or should I say put on my "Jewels" when I go out. Never wear any jewelry in the pool when at water aerobics. A lot of good information - thanks for sharing

the only jewelry I wear is my 10K gold wedding ring. I swim in a chlorinated pool about 100 days a year for the last 15 years, no problem.

Thank you for the info!

I can only wear titanium, and it doesn't seem bothered by chlorine.

If Mercury eats Gold, why did the miners use to use it to collect gold on their slush boxes? Mercury is still used in the jungles to collect gold. It is a very hazardous product to use though.
