Joe's Crab Shack -- Anyone been there?

We'll be heading to the Portland, Oregon area on Monday --- have a chance to go to Joe's Crab Shack. Their ads on TV have been driving me crazy!!!! Has anyone been to one --- and what are the price ranges?? I looked online but they don't say the prices. :)

Thanks in advance!

My girls took me to the one in Branson last year for my birthday and I can honestly say that it was the most fun place to eat!!! But, I did not see the bill and cannot remember what mine cost on the menu. About the same as Red Lobster, I would think - but not nearly as "fancy". They bring you your order in a bucket and you throw your "bones" (shells, corn cobs, etc.) in another bucket/hole in the table. The waitress brings paper/plastic bibs and she writes things on them with a magic marker - Queen Crab - and the like. The waitresses all get together and sing little cute songs. Nothing fancy about it at all - but so much fun.

OMG - at the top of this page is now an ad from Joe's Crab Shack - says to click on it and receive coupons. What a smart computer.

Ccorazone 08-04-2012 06:20 PM

I've been there once and vowed never to go again. The noise level was beyond control. And those waiters that ran around singing happy birthday all the time.

Teacup 08-04-2012 06:37 PM

It's my DH's favorite place to go...was so full on Father's Day we couldn't get in. The one near us, sandwiches/salads approx. $7-$9 range. Seafood meals are more, lobster of course is much higher.

sew_Tracy 08-04-2012 06:39 PM

Don't go because allergic to shellfish and don't trust that a shellfish has not touched other stuff! Have fun in Portland, one of my favorite cities!

amandasgramma 08-04-2012 06:45 PM

Thank, everyone! We're going to stay Monday nite in Pdx, then I'm flying out to Colorado to see son and his family. Can't wait -- haven't seen them in 1 1/2 yrs!!!! WAY too long. I'm wondering if I'm going to be able to get hubby into the Fabric Depot.....:) :)

luvTooQuilt 08-04-2012 06:47 PM

its not expensive but pricier than most.. Its hubbys favorite place and for the three of us our bill is in the $75 range... Including tip.. i dont like seafood but they have a nice non fish section too..

quiltingcandy 08-04-2012 10:43 PM

I have only been to the one in San Diego. The prices were fair. The atmosphere is extremely casual. We haven't been there for a while. I did prefer to go for dinner instead of lunch.

Rubesgirl 08-05-2012 03:57 AM

The food has always been tasty and plentiful. We enjoy going there. It an be a bit noisy, but it is a fun place. You cannot miss their HUGE chocolate cake ... seriously, even if you share it among the table. It is the best chocolate cake we've ever had out. I can only eat two or three bites because it's so rich. When we got married, DH had a whole one ordered as his groom's cake. It was gone so fast that he never evengot a piece. Enjoy your trip! :)

They are building the restaurant right now in a city nearby. My adult children can't wait to go. I know my dh and I will try it out since we love all kinds of seafood and serve it often at our house. The loud noise may be a factor since my dh wears hearing aids..so I know he won't like the noise but I'm sure he'll give it a try.

alwayslearning 08-05-2012 06:47 AM

We have been a couple of times, but last time we left as no one waited on us. My husband likes the food and we do not have many sea food options. I do not like it as it is too noisy. It is for a younger crowd.

Sheila_H 08-05-2012 09:06 AM

We had them in OK and I loved going to them you do get a pretty large portion of food I think it averages to that of Red Lobster. Yes they do tend to be noisy but the atmosphere is always that of happy people it's worth it I think. I love their shrimp platters and also the food was always nice and hot not warm like some other restaurants.

QuiltMania 08-05-2012 09:24 AM

I've been to the one near where I live and I will never go back. Extremely loud, uncomfortably so, and then they turned on this strobe type of light right above our table. They seemed truly bewildered when we asked them to turn it off because these type of lights trigger migraines for my mom and me. Eventually they did turn it off. The food was overpriced and not good. My DH mussels were filled with grit because they were not properly prepped. My rice was hard and chewy as was the supposedly fresh batch that they brought me when I complained.

We go once every several months, love the view, right on the water, great food, maybe pricey, depending on what you order, I personally love the dancing. Here, when a birthday is announced, the birthday person is rigged up like a seagull and walks around flapping their wings, (menus) and other patrons are told "don't feed the seagulls". We always enjoy ourselves, of course we live on the south Texas coast, so what's not to enjoy? Have a great trip.

sassey 08-05-2012 03:18 PM

i love their food if you order one of the bucket deals you get to much delicious food Noise and strobe lights bother me so I usually go late for lunch or early for dinner when it is nice and quiet

sewgull 08-05-2012 03:40 PM

Good food. Prices are comparable to most resturants, reasonable prices.

amandasgramma 08-05-2012 03:49 PM

Thank you EVERYONE! DH just saw the menu --- we're going to the crab shack!! LOL I think we'll do like Sassey and go earlier in the evening......

Thanks again -- YUMMMY I can't wait!

nativetexan 08-05-2012 05:12 PM

May I go too? I have tried and tried to get my hubby to go. sigh. I also tried to get him to Papadeaux's (sp). Oh well we can't afford to eat out now that I'm out of work again. have fun!!!

Rose_P 08-05-2012 06:57 PM

It's a chain, and we haven't been to one in years, but weren't that impressed. I think their prices around here are a little higher than Red Lobster, and the noise level was deafening. If I were going to a seaside area, I think I'd look around for a local place. I sometimes suspect that the big chains will park a restaurant near an ocean and then serve you seafood that was caught (or farmed) in some other ocean and frozen for a couple of months before it landed on your table. (Can't say if that's true of Joe's, of course).

Hoarder 08-06-2012 03:54 AM

After retiring from Maryland and traveling in a Motor Home for nine years hubby and I vowed NEVER to eat a crab cake outside of Maryland !! But if we go to Joe's we eat crab cakes. Enough said? Pricey, loud, fun and good!

Buttons922 08-06-2012 03:55 AM

Food is terrific!! 2 of us had buckets of food, desserts, and appetizers and drinks and with tip just under $85. The waiter was great. Would I do it again? You bet. I would order almost the same thing.

Caswews 08-06-2012 05:57 AM

Have fun !! we like Joe's but only go once a year as there is only one in Colorado..so when we have the time to go there we do that once a year.. Its a little pricey, but well worth it,yes its noisy, but then what restaurant isn't.

Quilter Day-by-Day 08-06-2012 06:33 AM

I've been there once and I agree with Ccorazone was pretty noisy. The prices are pricey about the same as Red Lobster. I would rather go to Red Lobster.

jbj137 08-06-2012 07:57 AM

I hate the one in our area (Greenville, SC).
Also visited the one in Fayetteville, NC.
The same for both.

Prices are high.
Food not that good.
Way toooo noisy for me.
More of a kid's place.

dorrell ann 08-06-2012 08:57 AM

I have had the fried clam -take out- and it was very good and the price was no higher than the normal chain rest.

Latrinka 08-06-2012 01:43 PM

When we lived in FL, my son loved the one in panama city. He said they had a sign that read "Free Crabs Tomorrow"

ziegamomma 08-06-2012 03:12 PM

Nope, won't go
too noisy
pricey
the wait staff danced on the tables....where have their shoes been? YYUUUCCCHHHH

debbieoh 08-06-2012 04:10 PM

THe place is GREAT!!! We had one here but it closed. it was one of our favorite places to eat

caspharm 08-06-2012 05:06 PM

It's pretty good and definitely very casual. Prices range from 15-40 depending on what you order. Some of the pots are big enough to share.

amandasgramma 08-06-2012 06:01 PM

OKAY!!!! We went there tonight. It didn't help that I-205 was backed up with and accident -- took us 45 min. to go 15 miles. Remember -- I'm from a small town where "congestion" means 3 cars at an intersection!!! WHEW!

Noise level -- not too bad ---- but we were there early -- as we were leaving the crowds had come and people were waiting in line.
Food --- good except I let them put Old Bay Seasoning on all the fish --- well, I've used that product and NEVER felt like my mouth was on fire!!!! I'm sure they put Cayan in it!! -- otherwise -- YUM YUM YUM!!! Still haven't had my fill of crab though!!!
Prices -- yeah -- spendier than we normally spend. We got a "steam pot"....and an appetizer of 12 shrimp. We shared it all -- so total price was less than if we'd gone to Outback. :) :)

We've been, we'll do it again!

kathome 08-06-2012 06:38 PM

I've been there 3 times because DH loves it there. Honestly, I don't know why. We were rushed and it's noisy and crowded to the point of annoyance. But worse of all, ALL 3 TIMES I GOT SICK. That can't possibly be a coincidence.

No kidding. Stomach pain and bad diarrhea. So now, I don't care how much DH loves it, he can go alone. Never again.

stichinluvr 08-06-2012 07:46 PM

Great food. Great atmosphere (very casual).

I hesitate for the same reason, but I have had great luck when I tell the waiter that I am allergic to shell fish and could they please ask the cook what I could eat that does not have any shellfish. I then tell them that if the pan that cooks my portions has not been well washed then need to have the paramedics standby. I have not had problems. :)

Debra Mc 08-06-2012 08:22 PM

It is good but expensive. Those steamer pots they have been advertising start at $25.00. Start! You can get some for 2 people that are $39.95. Remember these are Texas prices. May be higher or lower where you are. Was fun.

They have a nice couch and a TV in the entry area. Usually a couple supportive spouses chilling while waiting for the ladies. He'll have a good time

Dolphyngyrl 09-01-2012 05:59 PM

There not too bad 25 dollar range here in cali

raedar63 09-01-2012 06:08 PM

The food was good but I am not for the chaos lol.

amandasgramma 09-01-2012 06:56 PM

We went about 4:00 and it wasn't bad, but by the time we left (5:00 or so) it was getting crazy. And yes, $25.00 isn't bad at all for what we got.
