Just in case you weren't feeling too old today ........ The people who are starting college this fall were born in 1992. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Their lifetime has always included AIDS. The CD was introduced two years before they were born. They have always had an answering machine. They have always had cable. Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. Popcorn has always been microwaved. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard: 'Where's the Beef?', 'I'd walk a mile for a Camel ' or 'de plane Boss, de plane'. McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter. Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list. P.S. Save the earth. It's the only planet with chocolate.. |
its scary...I remember having a nickel and buying a candy bar

LMBO yes....now I am feeling really old, thank you very much
How about going to the movies for 50 cents? and another 50 cents bought a candy bar, pop and popcorn???? |
And 18 people in a car going to the drive-in for $2/car???? (Or if he was extra special, you insisted the two of you go alone :D :D :D )
|
OK, I guess this makes me older than dirt -- right?
|
Oh my I remember them all.
|
When my dad closed his gas station in 73 gas was 54.9 for full service which included checking your battery and your oil and wiping your windows-- 49.9 for mini service which was only pumping your gas for you.
Mini service was the first thing the industry tried to get more customers before self service was introduced a few years later. When my DH and I had our 2 gas stations in 1975 cigarettes were 50 cents a pack. Do you remember green stamps and gold regal stamps? We gave them out at my dad's service station. I remember my grandma saving them for my cousin and I to lick and put into the books so they could be redeemed for merchandise. Toasters bookshelves lamps etc. |
When I first started driving, I can remember paying 29.9/gallon -- can you say "gas wars"????? (Hey, whatever happened to those anyway????)
|
Do you remember getting free dishes in laundry soap? My mom collected a whole dinner set for 4 this way.
|
We used to get glassware in Quaker Oats -- and plastic "pop" beads on top of our milk bottles that were delivered to the house each morning....

Yes, I remember the drive-ins...often sneaking someone in, in the trunk!!! And gas? 17 cents a gallon...and you got a free mug with a fill!! First movie I remember going to I paid 25 cents...and sat thru' it twice!!!
HEHEHE Me thinks a lot of us are "dating" selves.  |
I remember my mom just shocked at the price of stamps going to 5cents. Oh and I did get globlets out of duz laundry soap when I was first married!
Times have changed |

We used to get Goblets with our admission to the movie theater! But then, wages were pretty sorry!
|
For prom one year the school rented the whole drive in movie theater and we went to the drive in as part of our prom activities.'
When I was 14 I was asked if I wanted to work at the A & W drive-in but I was too shy to do that. We went to the A & W after church every Sun night in the summer time for root beer floats. |
We still have a record player and a vinyl collection that goes with it. DH even has a reel-to-reel.
|
Go ask a kid if they want to listen to a record...they will look at you like you have 4 heads...they have NO idea what that is!

Quiltncrazy...I think why the 17 cents sticks in my head is because of my brother running out of gas on his way home from university one day. He had exactly enough change in his pocket for one gallon....17 cents. He had an old Austin ...and drove to university and back on that 17 cents for another 3 or 4 days!!!! Granted, it wasn't a real long drive, but still!!!!!!
|
Shoots, Mom would give us a quarter, we'd go to the movies, get a soda and candy and come home with change!
Dad would give me 50 cents. I'd get on my bike, ride to the gas station with the gas can, get it filled, buy him a pack of smokes and sit and have a soda, then come back home. These days, you give a kid a quarter and they look at you wondering what they are going to do with it. lol I remember my first REAL job. I made a whopping $1.72/hr working 2d shift in a nursing home. That was alot of money! That $1.72 included the "shift differential". |
My DH collects records and radios and 8 track tapes and we have an 8 track player. He has old player piano rolls and collects cassette tapes and has some of the victrola records. He has some records that were home taped by someone. Nobody we know just something we added to the collection. We have a case of old tubes for radios and old TVs and we have a case similar to a record player case that is the unit to test the tubes to make sure they are good. I remember going to the local drug store and testing tubes for the TV on their tester. It was a free public service. We were married in 75 so this was that year. He has a record set that has the radio announcer telling about the hindenburg disaster as it happened. He has more than I can remember. We are always picking up stuff to add to it.
He also has a coke and pepsi collection that includes a lot of the old and older cans and bottles you won't see now. Do you remember YooHoo pop? There was a Double Cola out in the 70s and I remember when all you could choose from was Root Beer Coke and orange or grape. I have a box of caps in my collectible collection for bottling your own Root Beer at home. It came with a flavor packet. There were all sorts of pop you don't see anymore. I don't think they make Squirt anymore do they? When I went to Mexico on a school trip in 72 we were told we couldn't drink the Coke there as it still had cocaine in it then in Mexico but not the US. Coke began with cocaine before anyone figured out that was a bad thing!! |
