Kindle Fire Ads Driving You Nutz?
Cindy loves her Kindle Fire HD, but told me yesterday she was getting ready to chuck it because of the ads that pop up all the time, pretty much every time she changes apps.
With a quick Bing search, I learned you can get rid of the ads by making a one-time payment of $15 to Amazon, the amount they claim the ads subsidize the device's price. You go into your Amazon account, click on manage your Kindle device, and edit your ad subscription. Videos on how to do it are one Youtube. She's now a happy camper with her Kindle, and it was a lot cheaper than buying a new tablet computer. :) |
that is very interesting to hear!!! isn't that how the bad guys get their money... hold something hostage until you pay???
|
good grief. I guess they figure if someone can afford the K Fire, they can afford a few more dollars. Not me.
|
when you purchase your kindle you have the option * 2 different prices* to buy one without the ads- or with the ads---my hubby did not want the ads, so I paid extra for his- I didn't care- so mine was less expensive- they do not bother me. the option is always available- I don't pay any attention to them so it makes no difference. we have the same thing with our phones- hubby's phone gets ads, mine does not- just based on what we paid for them when we bought them.

We have several Kindles. One with ads and the others without. The ads doesn't bother us. I found if you turn the wi fi setting to off then no ads pop up anyway at least not on the Kindle Fire.
|
I get ads, but mine are unobtrusive and are are only on the home page where you unlock the Kindle Fire (I may also not get any ads because I went into my settings and turned off notifications from pretty much everything). After downloading, some apps were sending annoying ads and this seemed to stop them. I actually like the ad page at startup though... Amazon tries to sell things there but also gives things away there for free every once in a while. About 6 weeks ago I got a $5.00 Amazon gift certificate for free.

Really ? You have to pay extra to get no ads?
|
My Kindle Fire dosnt have ads but I have not added any aps, just download books.
Would be very upsett after paying so much for it, to find ads on it. |
This is why I just have the old fashioned paper books....no annoying ads. Seems to me that don't need all that electronic stuff...
|
Just purchased mine, have not notice that problem , yet.

I don't know about the Fire, but when I got my Paperwhite Kindle there were two options listed, and the ad-free version was about $20 more at the time. I think it also mentioned, up front, that you can later pay up and quit getting the ads. If I could get rid of ads on certain websites by paying a few extra dollars, I might consider it. Many of us have a long history of paying extra to get commercial free TV stations. It's a fact that sponsors offset the cost of things like that.

It's all right there on the Kindle sale page at Amazon, Kindle with ads or without. With ads cost less. Your choice, not theirs.
|
I don't have a kindle fire but was upset about ads for books coming up on my touch. I got the kindle as a gift. Any way to make a long story short I contacted Amazon and told them that if a book that I wanted to read ever came up on their ads I would go to Barnes & Noble and pay hardcover price before I would ever buy it from them. Couple of days later the ads disappeared.

Wow, I can't believe you all have to do this. I have two Nooks, the 3G and the Nook color and I've never had to deal with ads popping up and they have one price for all. Another good reason to add to the list that makes my Nook better than the Kindle.

Love my kindle

The Kindles are every bit as good as the Nook. Some of us opt to purchase the one with ads to save $.. It's cheaper and the ads aren't bothersome at all. They only show up when you turn your Kindle on. It's good to have that option if you want to save money. |
We didn't get them in the beginning either, but the longer we have it the more we get.. Thanks for the information.

As for ads on websites, I almost never see them with firefox - Tools - Add Ons - Get Add-ons Search for "AdBlock Plus" Looks completely different than on my iPhone. And I pay for bandwidth on iPhone which means I pay to see those ads. |

I wasn't saying anything against the Kindle, everyone has the right to get what they want. All I said it was another reason to add to the list why "I" made the best choice for me. I chose the Nook because they don't care where you buy your books from, they support many different formats. Rather its Sony, or Kindle or Apple, I don't like companies who make something and sell it to you but you can only use what they produce. I have never heard of this charge for ads before because Nook doesn't do that. It's just one price for all and I never have ads to pop up. It surprised me that this exsist. I know our PC's come with all of those ads on them and the AOL, McAfee, etc all get deleted as soon as I set it up because its just wasting space on my hard drive. |
The basic Kindle with ads is $70. That is what I buy for gifts for older kids. If lost or broken, not that much invested and now most schools have BYOD (Bring you own device) study hall. The basic Kindle is perfect for having all the required reading books on it. And the classic books kids are required to read are all free to download. In one minute you can have the 100 World Classics downloaded.

The ads were the reason why I decided not to replace my old, 2nd-gen Kindle that I had dropped on the floor. I am tired of being constantly bombarded with ads in every aspect of my life - billboards, radio ads, tv commercials.... We dropped Directv a few months ago and went to nothing but Netflix, Roku, and broadcast tv. Tv ads in my life have dropped about 80% and I couldn't be more pleased. I refuse to pay the extra $20 for an ad-free Kindle.
|
I don't let ads of any type bother me. I seldom pay attention to them. I rarely notice them on this site. I had no idea there was a quilt of the week shown on this board until I read a post about it. LOL.
|
Quilt of the week? Guess I don't know about that either.

Kind of like the glass being half full or half empty. I look at it as the one without the ads having the regular price. You can get a discount if you don't mind the ads. Funny how we all look at things differently. |

Somebody at Amazon should take note of this. If they listed it as a way to get a discount it might be a lot more palatable to a lot of us. That is truly what it is, since the sponsors are willing to offset that extra cost, just as they do on TV. |
They really get their money's worth, don't they. For $20 they can bombard you with ads until the end of time. If there was an end date to the ads, I might have considered it.

Believe me it's an advantage for saving money. When you turn it on the ads pop up. You go to your book and start reading. No more ads until next time you turn it on. No big deal.

I am mad at Amazon because last year someone fraudulently bought 2 kindle books on my account for $200 each and one of them I am certain isn't a real book (the author Was "Som E. Body"). I kept calling them and calling them, stopped counting after 15 calls, never got the same person twice and had to tell the whoe story every time. They were less than helpful, believe me. They would say that they were going to email their fraud dept. I would ask for the number of the fraud dept so that I could contact them directly and would be told "they don't have telephones" which I thought was an insult to my intelligence, or else I want that job. The last time I called, the person was very rude and said that the "Som E. Body" book was definitely a real book. She was so disrespectful that I couldnt bring myself to call again and my bank ended up taking the $400 loss.
That is why I closed my Amazon account, but they own so many of the other web based companies, so is the Nook related to Amazon too? |
And I think it is typical for them to try to extract small amounts of money from their customers by making them pay to get rid of adverts.
|
call Amazon again. they were extremely helpful after I bought my Kindle keyboard. they should do something.
|
NO, Nook isn't related to Amazon in any way. The reason I chose Nook, I now have 3, the black and white 3G, the color and my latest as of last week, the Nook Tablet HD+ is because they allow you to have multiple formats in books so you can get them from so many places. They are assoicitaed with Barnes and Noble and I've had no problems with them. I have bought everything from cds to movies that I've downloaded onto my tablet and no issues. If possible I would suggest to buy your ereader/tablet from the store rather than places like Best buy only because then you can take your Nook right to the store and get help and if you need to use your warranty they can help. If you get it from somewhere else and need to use the warranty then you have to take it to them. Other than that BnN will help you, the even have classes to teach you added features of the devices. I just got my tablet last week and noticed the charger cord wouldn't stay in. I went to the store but forgot my cord but the guy showed me how tight it should be and when I told him mine wasn't he gave me a new cord right there. Once I had some small charges (under $5) to show up on my account, I emailed BnN and they credited my account right then and there. They also have free apps for most cell phones, tablets, and pcs so you can use these devices if you don't want to get one at the current time.
