Kindle users!!!!!!!!! Mine is dying. I got the Fire, which I did not love as I only wanted a reader and the Fire used a lot of energy and I had to charge all the time Sooooooooooooo does anyone have the Paperwhite, which is what I think I want. My question is, what is with the "Special Offers" VS no special offers?? I really don't want pop ups while I'm reading a book. So if you have a Paperwhite, how does that work for you?? Which did you get and is it worth the extra money to not have "Special Offers"?

I have the Kindle Keyboard not the Paperwhite. Special Offers means that when the Kindle moves into sleep mode it will have an offer from Amazon displayed. It NEVER displays at any other time and as soon as you click out of sleep mode it disappears. To me the money saved on the purchase by letting them advertise during sleep mode is worth it. The special offers are almost always for books and are sometimes a good deal.

not sure about a paperwhite. I have the keyboard also and it shows an ad when I shut it off. irritates me in only the fact that I think that uses battery power. but not sure it does. I like mine and can't afford to replace it. hope someone gives you the info you need.

I bought the Paperwhite for my husband for Christmas. He much prefers it to my Kindle Fire HDX because it is smaller and lighter. The special offers are not an issue when you are reading. He is very pleased with it and would replace it if it stopped working.

I've had a Paperwhite 3G for about 15 months, and I love it! I don't subscribe to the "special offers," which only show on the home screen, not when you're reading. All I want is a good reader. I'll check out the other stuff on my computer. I basically use the 3G feature instead of WiFi when I buy another book (which means I don't have to be anywhere near a WiFi signal). The Paperwhite is great for reading in bed and not disturbing my wife (who is the primary user of this quilting board). You can learn more about "special offers" by clicking on "learn more" when you look at any of the Kindles. Anyway, for simply reading, it can't be beat! I have the old school kindle maybe 2nd edition 4-5 years or so old I love it its 3G I dont even have adds on the screen saver it's book covers. I prefer reading off that it's easier on my eyes than my iPad I have the kindle app on it too I use it when I read in bed and don't want to disturb my husband. Best part is they sync up so I don't have to look for where I was in the book. Just recently the battery started wearing down where I have to charge it more often, once a week or so.

I will say with my keyboard one, I now charge it by connecting to my computer. when ever I did use the plug in an outlet, it always got hot. Scary!!! Amazon even replaced the plug but the same thing happened. so one thing to check out.

I used the money D/H gave me for Valentine's Day to buy a refurbished Kindle Paperwhite. I have been very pleased with it so far. I travel by public transit to work each day and have really enjoyed reading on the bus. I bought the refurbished one as it came with the same warranty and was cheaper - more money for fabric :) I have charged it once since getting it, and I used my android phone charger to do that.

AZ Jane, not sure if you already know this (and I apologize if you do), but turning off the Wi-Fi on your Kindle Fire will conserve the battery. When I'm just using mine to read (after the book/magazine/whatever is already downloaded), I simply turn off the Wi-Fi until I'm ready to download again. Just think about it this way - when the Wi-Fi is on, it's always "pinging" back to the internet to see if something is ready to download, which uses battery life.

As to your original question, as others have said, the special offers don't bother you while reading. I've actually bought several things because of the special offers!

I LOVE my Paperwhite!! I had a regular Kindle before this one and my DH bought me the Paperwhite so I could read even if the lighting is bad in a room. The ads are only when you first turn on the machine, not while you read. I got a leather cover for it that has a magnet closure. When you close it, it turns off the Paperwhite! This is one of those gifts that I keep thanking DH for, I love it so much!

I bought my Kindle Xmas 2010, After a yr I had a problem, called Amazon (where I bought it) and had a new replacement in 2 days. The second one is still fine and I average reading 3 books a week on it.. I keep hoping something will happen so I can get a new one. I researched the new ones, I looked for lightweight and long battery. I also want the back light and 3G so you can get a book anytime, anywhere. I buy lots of books from Amazon when they discount them and also borrow from my library for free.

DH reads in bed and had an older Kindle with built in book light. I bought him the Paperwhite. He doesn't need extra light to read and he can read in bright sunlight. I like my Kindle Fire to have the quilt books, patterns, and magazines in full color. I have a Kindle that only has the classic books on it and one for grands to use with their favorite books and games on it. You can buy a Kindle at Amazon for $49 when there is a special sale. About the cost of two new books.

I have two Kindles. I have had the reader with the keyboard (and no special advertisements). I really love it and carry it with me wherever I go. The, my husband gave me a Fire HDX for Christmas. It does have the special announcements but I just click them off. They are so repetitive. I find them moderately annoying because I am not interested in them. However, they are there. I like this Kindle because of all the info I have stored on it but feel vulnerable in case I should lose it somehow. If I had to choose between them I would choose the first one I had. I also have a PC so some of the functions that are on the Fire are redundant.

Yes, this saves on battery life. My habit is to research and load reading material off my PC, then the next time I turn my Kindlekeyboard on, I click on wifi so it can download, then turn it off again.

As others have said, the advertising is not popping up and it is not a problem.

I also have the 3g Kindle with the keyboard and the special offers. Offers have never bothered me. Only complaint about mine is not having a light for nighttime reading.

Mine was a gift. I don't know how I ever got along without it. The ads from Amazon only appear when I first turn it on. If I'm interested, I follow up. I buy all my books using my desktop computer. froggyintexas

I bought myself a Kindle Fire HD for my Christmas gift after hubby gave me money as a Christmas gift. I love my Kindle Fire. It doesn't have a camera on it but that is Ok. I wasn't planning to use it as a camera. But I love the fact that I can download emails for my reading in the car if we are going somewhere. I have downloaded loads of free books from Amazon and Book Bub, and have even got knitting patterns on it. I will be taking it with me to Ashville NC in June when I go to the American Hemerocallis Society's National Convention, since it is much lighter in weight than my tablet is. I can fit it into the day bag I will be using to hold my wallet and keys as well as a camera ,phone and a water bottle when we are visiting gardens.

I loooooove my Paperwhite. I had the original Kindle with buttons and a very nice cover with book light before. My MIL sent me the Paperwhite wifi with free offers as a gift and it is indeed wonderful. It is lighter than the original and has a number of extra features. The free offers only appear when you first open it or turn it on. I don't mind this at all because it gives me ideas of other books that I might enjoy. I have the Amazon leather case which is small and fits tightly and which causes the Kindle to turn on when it is opened. I might have chosen the 3G model had I not received it as a gift since that is what I had before, but I don't find it to be a big problem to make sure that I have several books loaded if I will be somewhere without wifi. The brightness of the screen is adjustable as well as font size and a number of other features. I highy recommend it!!

I have the Kindle Paperwhite Wifi as well as the iPad Air. It was worth it to me to pay the little extra to turn off the ads/offers. I don't care for the distraction, but I love my Kindle! It goes with me everywhere.

When the Kindle Paper White came out, I gave my Kindle Fire to my daughter. As everyone has said earlier, the special offers don't bother you since they only occur when it is in sleep mode. I read my Kindle all the time and only have to charge it approximately every three weeks. The changeable lighting feature is great since it gives you the opportunity to change the amount of light it provides according to the environment. I will always have the Kindle Paper White for the books I want to read. I am thinking about purchasing the Kindle Fire HDX since my library of cross stitch and quilting books and magazines has gotten out of hand. I have found that there are numerous titles now available for the Kindle Fire at lower costs than buying paperback or hardback books. AND, since there are no longer any bookstores within a 75 miles radius of where I live, I don't have the luxury of browsing the magazines to see if I want to purchase them. This means that I have to pay for at least a full years' subscription. Kindle Fire magazine subscriptions can be purchased monthly, which suits me. Sorry for the wordsy reply. :p

I just rec'd my new Kindle Paperwhite and I love it. My Kindle Keyboard is about 5 years old and the battery wasn't holding a charge well. The Paperwhite is a lot easier on the eyes and I love the touch screen. The Paperwhite is smaller (screen is the same size) and lighter weight than my original Kindle so it fits into my purse better. I paid extra so that I didn't have to deal with the "special offers" aka "ads".

I love my paperwhite, I can read in bed and not disturb my husband, its great for reading in bright sunlight. I had the original but the screen got damaged, which is why I bought the paperwhite and its so much better. I have a Samsung tablet and my kindle syncs to the tablet which means if I'm readin my kindle in bed and leave it upstairs, if I want to read downstairs I just pick up my tablet, tap the app and it automatically goes to the same page.
