Can i/Should I use Cotton to make kitchen valances? I really dont like the feel of drapery fabric. I know they will need to be lined so the sun doesnt burn them but i am not sure if it ill look good. I will need high quality cotton right?

I used a cotton blend. I bought it at Jo-Ann's in their house decorating fabric section. And used a nice muslin for the backing.

what is a cotton blend?
|
57% Cotton 43% Polyester
Or Cotton Polyester and rayon type. This type of fabric also hangs very well. |
I just made one for my friend who live in MI. Lined it with muslin, and used cotton plaid for the panel.

Great. I'm going to have to plan a trip to joanns. Does it wash well??

For my valances (kitchen, kid's room, bathroom) I just used regular fabric, cotton or poly/cotton blend, and doubled it.
This comes out much nicer than the not so cheapie purchased ones and gives you a much wider choice too. Very easy to just match the border of your quilt, for instance, if you use it in the bedroom. |
I have made valances many times out of cotton. In fact am now making some for DD to match the red, white and blue strip quilt I made for her. I will line them because they are also done in strips and I don't want the seems to show.

Sure you can use cotton! If it isn't heavy you may want to line them..

Great info. I would like to also make some. Do you have pictures of some you've made? ;)
