knitting and crocheting

I have just started both...have not made a thing yet just the stitches. I just found this knitting and crocheting board that is very good. http://www.ravelry.com - sharing...I am hoping to get good enough to do a simple scraf and maybe a pair of socks. LOL

I know you will love crocheting and knitting all kinds of things for yourself and family.

DJ 11-30-2011 07:27 AM

Try starting with a dish cloth. You can practice stitches, and if it's not perfect, it's still useful. A small project that's fairly quick to finish, too. Hope you have fun with it!

Have you seen the site www.knittingparadise ? I admit to looking there sometimes too.

My sil taught me by making a pair of argyle socks. I knitted one inch and she ripped out two. She said I would cry and vow never to speak to her again, but that I would be able to knit anything after that experience. She was right. Although after all these years I do have directions that I don't understand. Perhaps someone on that board will. Thanks for the site. My advice: DON'T start with argyle socks. A scarf or dishcloths were excellent suggestions.

Carol, I have been looking for a class on knitting and like you, just want to get good enough to make scarves, etc., nothing fancy. I learned to knit as a kid and know the basic stitches, but never learned to increase or decrease. Good luck with your knitting and let me know how you are doing. Lucy

I've been trying to learn how to knit but am having trouble. I can crochet with no problem but can't seem to get coordinated enough to use two needles. Ever see those Mr Bean shows? Picture him trying to knit and that's me.

I've been crocheting since I was in 5th grade. I learned from a classmate. I can read patterns and have made a lot of afghans, scarves and booties but never any clothing. Right now I'm working on crocheting mittens for my grandchildren. The only thing hard about it is guessing the size since they will be Christmas gifts. I also learned to knit at the same time but never really got into it until a few years ago. Now I knit dishcloths and scarves. I haven't ventured out to things that require a lot of concentration...

Crochet is my passion. After you learn the basic stitches and how to read a pattern, and get comfortable with tension, you can make anything.

QUILTNMO 11-30-2011 09:04 AM

good luck i love crocheting

Knitting paradise.com is a great knitting board, a lot of encouragement, ideas, instructions and links to other great sites. I've been to ravelry also and it is good....went to verypink.com yesterday and it seems cumbersome...will take more effort than I want to put into it !

I'm not able to be near my sewing machine lately, so I needed a portable craft. I signed up for a beginning knitting class on craftsey.com. So far I am just working on knitting and purling. It seems like a good class so far.

I crochet practically every day. For a really good group of people - like here, on our dear Quilting Board - - go to www.crocheville.org. You can find anything and everything there and all the help you'll need.

I do both knitting and crocheting but knitting is my favorite as when I knit it's usually something to wear for others or myself. Knitting is a close second hobby to quilt making for me. Great relaxer, great totable hobby as it makes 'wait' time pass quickly. I was taught the basics of both when I was very young and have been self-taught since then. I've since moved on to circular needles for all my knitting and wouldn't invest in anything else now. Circulars are much more totable and legal than straight needles. Stay with either of these two hobbies and you'll never regret it. Knittting hats for babies/preemies and/or those less fortunate than yourself is a great way to get experience plus helping others.

I LOVE KnittingParadise! It was started by Konstantin after he sold the Quilting Board. If you miss the old format, you can go there and visit it. It's his...

here is a board that looks like a "sister" to our quilting board that I have found really helpful:

oh what fun! I love to crochet, not that into knitting though. a scarf is a great place to start!

Honeynga 12-02-2011 03:53 PM

YES, I found Knitting Paradise a while back when I was thinking about getting back into knitting.....being a "new" quilter and am overwhelmed at all the details, I decided that I wanted to knit for a while and not have to stress out over it ! I was so excited that Knitting Paradise is so much like the OLD QB......so easy to navigate and seems like you can make a closer connection to those that blog on there.

I wasn't a part of QB when Konstatin (sp?) was involved but I don't really care...I think a human need has been fulfilled in this type board rather than one that has so many restrictions and such a huge learning curve.

Now, don't be sending me a message about how easy it is to navigate I don't really care.....I'm older, have a lot of health issues, not computer savvy and only want an easy board to navigate whether it is knitting or quilting !

StitchinJoy 12-02-2011 03:57 PM

Oh, scarves are easy. Socks are harder.

Afghans are just wider, longer scarves. I would suggest a few scarves and an afghan in different patterns. There are thousands of free patterns on the web, really nice ones on Lion Brand yarn site and Project Linus website.

This is a great idea! I have been using them as cat toys but now they have way too many. I love the dish cloth idea.
