Lampshades, Placemats and Coconut Candy and a Little Chat lol

I have been in a mindless mood again and I love it. Some time ago, a friend gave me a lovely lamp. The kind that you put one of those otte bulbs in. The only things is, it needed a glass shade, the kind that has three screws to screw the shade in. Well I couldn't find a glass shade to fit so I decided to make one as I wanted to use the lamp.

Here is the way I made it. I measured the circumference of the little hole and then just added my own figures for the bottom. I cut four gores of fabric and sewed them together but left one side open. I layed that onto a piece of windowshade interfacing and cut and sewed it to the cloth shade, sewed up the back. Made a cardboard back, cut the hole in and glue fabric on both side and I can now use my lamp.

Placemats

I have always wanted to make some placemats for my table but never got around to it. I got in the mood last night and made three. They are all out of my scrap bin except for the Laurel Burch here and there. Remember when we made wonky blocks? You would make a block and tape your ruler to the size you wanted and cut the block out at an angle. I did that to the first two mats. The last one I made, I fussy cut a cat and just crazy patched around it. They were fun as anything goes....hubby loves them.

Coconut Candy

I happened to go into Winn/Dixie one day just because I was in a hurry. I spied white coconuts. Now if you're from one of the islands, you know immediately that a white outer shell on a coconut, means it is a young coconut...so it is loaded with lovely water and the meat itself is a consistency of between soft and meduim hard and is delicious....

I immediately thought coconut candy. I pieced the nuts and drained out 2 1/4 pints of water. I then wrapped each one in a towel and busted them on the cement floor. Once they are busted you can just scoop out the meat with a butter knife. I chopped the nuts and cooked them for an hour or so in brown sugar and water and ginger. I didn't put enough sugar in so they didn't get hard. I then just scooped them into a bowl and put them in the frig. I made coconut cookies and have plenty left to make a pie or more cookies etc.

This the last mat finished. This one I just sewed the pieces onto the batting then sewed on the lining, pillow case style, turned inside out and top stitched all around. The previous ones were done the same way except for the piecing. I pieced the whole top then put it on the batting and sewed down each seam.

Here's a tip about the real coconut candy. Not only is it delicious but it serves the same purpose as a (god forbid) colonic lol. It has to be fresh coconut. It is a natural inside body cleaner lol......

Now, if I could just peel one of those candies off that wax paper, I'd be good to go. LOL I love those placemats of yours. I'm a placemat person, and your's are just way too cute.

Love the lampshade, placemats, and want a piece of that candy NOW! LOL!

Rosyhf 05-19-2012 09:59 AM

hahahah I knew you all would love the candy. I sent one of the cookies to my SIL with a heaping of coconut candy on top. She said she thinks she died and went to heaven. I wonder why women love coconut so much? I love it more than chocolate.

I want to make more placemats and have a few other ideas of design but need to do something else first, stay tuned. In a couple days I will post a couple of my ideas and feel free to join in the making if you want to.

Just food for thought (no pun intended lol) I am thinking that templates of the tumbler, flying geesse, windmill, clam shell (this is a good one) in mimi version would make great scrap mats or any of the charm templates. They would fit perfectly on the scraps. Just keep in mind to place the light against dark for effect and color can play a key if you wish. Also you can add a pic here and there for a center of interest like a cat or fish or one of the Laurel Burch or any novelty fabric that can be fussy cut. In no time you will have beautiful mini quilts for your table.

No grass grows under your feet for certain. You've been a busy lady. Great projects. Can imagine the candy tastes like a piece of heaven. You either love or hate coconut.
