Leftover Craft Sale

Been invited to this kind of sale--never done this so it should be interesting. Along with fabric, I have lot of other sewing items. A few questions, please. On some of my fabrics I will never use ( why did I buy that ? ) I have as much as 5 yards or more of some prints, 4 yards of another, etc. Should I leave the fabric as a whole piece or cut into 2 yards, 1 yard pieces, etc. ? At this time, do not think I will cut fat quarters or should I ? Should I leave fabric out or put in plastic bags with note on length and price ? Either way, I plan to price all items. The sale place will not have smoke food or animals so my fabrics will be fine. What is not sold, I will try again in the Fall with some of my craft sales. After those sales, some of the items will be donated. Yes, doing a semi destash sale. Thanks for any help !

I would prefer that the pieces be left intact - for backings and/or borders.

Would you be able to cut smaller pieces if someone wanted that instead of the long length?

I wouldn't put in plastic bags, and I also wouldn't cut the fabric. I would measure and pin the length to each fabric so the buyer knows how much is there.

Would you be able to cut at the sale? If so, you could have a sign that you will cut longer pieces to 1/2 yard or 1 yard increments on request. The cutting at the table slows everything down, plus it is easiest if all yardage is priced the same per yard, so you might want to skip that. I wouldn't put fabric in plastic bags because quilters like to "pet" fabric.

Think about how to organize the table. Perhaps longer pieces folded and stacked, with yardages pinned so people can read the yardage for each piece without taking apart the entire stack. If you have lots of this kind of fabric, perhaps color code each stack, or organize batiks in one stack, civil war in another.

Oh don't cut the fabric! Put a great price on it and let it ALL go!

Good luck!

good ideas--thank you------will take my scissors ( tied to my money belt -don't want to lose them ) and can cut pieces if needed .

i prefer to buy fabrics in the largest size possible

I think you would be better off not cutting, especially on your first go round of sales. I would be more likely to buy large pieces for backings, too, as others have said. If your prices are right, it will sell.

leave them uncut and not bagged

KarenR 06-10-2017 04:00 AM

Don't cut. I think most people would buy the entire piece. Is there an area on Quilting Board where it can be sold?

Charity quilters are always happy to receive fabric, especially larger pieces for backing. Maybe you will consider that.

I had a moving fabric yard sale and left all my fabric the way I bought it. I did measure all and put the size on the pieces. I put a great price per yard and sold 1200 dollars worth. With the price people bought the big pieces. I did have some yards and also fat quarters that sold great too. Good luck

I would pin the amount of yardage and price in two different places on the fabric...one at top and one on bottom. This way if you would cut a piece, the other end of fabric is already marked. Also initial your tags so that you know that someone didn't switch tags on you. I've done one of these sales before, believe me, a little more work ahead of time is worth the headaches later. Enjoy your sale.

What a great idea for a sale! I would also leave them uncut and not bagged. I think most people would want to feel the fabric - I would.

Where in Texas will this sale be? I am in Houston.

We are in Sattler near Canyon Lake and New Braunfels between San Antonio and Austin, off I-35. Sending you a link with more info. Thanks for ideas

I would have put small yardage in plastic bag long as it's big enough to see enough of the fabric without having to be taken out. It stays clean & therefore buyer knows that. The info on yardage available is great idea. The 3 or more yardscan be put in order on table in rows folded. That's how I did mine, but more brought the crochets items instead. Takes right area to sell right interested items, it seems.

Like everyone's suggestions and agree. What do you think about having a sign listing the total yardage of ALL your
yardage and a price for it all as well. Backings have been mentioned but those who sew might, also, purchase it for duvets, toys, pillows, clothing, etc. showing interest in fabrics in many colors and designs.

annievee 06-12-2017 09:24 PM

Wonnie, good idea. It is 2 day show--would be nice if I sold all of it in 1 day--dreaming !
