Llamas or alpacas?

Can anyone tell me whether these are llamas or alpacas? Not that I would know the difference at all... useful hair, long necks, that's the limit of my knowledge, I'm sorry to say!

I think they are llamas. I googled both and in the google picture they look like llamas. I live near a "small ranching" area, with all kinds of critters. (One guy walks his pet camel around town.) I have seen them in the yards, big and small, and just took it for granted they were llamas. Now I will have to pay closer attention. Thank you for asking as I have learned something new today.

I'm thinking llama, too. I'm also wondering just what a quilt with this would look like............????
|
I could be mistaken, but I think there is some of each in there. The only way I know how to tell the difference is the shape of the ears ... Llama's have ears that curve in toward each other at the tip, Alpaca ears are straight, they don't curve.
The top pic looks like all Llama's ... the bottom photo is a little harder to tell because a lot of them have their ears relaxed (not up/alert) and it's harder to see the curve when they're relaxed. There are also coat differences ... and again ... I think I see some of both in the bottom photo. |
Top photo is llama's. Bottom photo is alpacas. Alpacas are much smaller than llamas. I have an aunt and uncle who raise alpacas.

the shape of their faces are different and their necks. other than that, I don't know.

I looked it up. There are both in these pictures. Llamas are twice as large and full bodied, course outer hair over a very fine under coat. Alpacas are the smaller and slimmer of the two and have fine silky hair. Both are herd animals and like to be with others. Both are gentle and can be tamed easily with the right handling.

yep, I think you're right.
|
You're right. First picture is llamas. Second one is alpacas. I have had both.

The top picture is llamas and the bottom alpacas. We have alpacas. We had 12 but the neighbors 5 dogs came over & killed them all. We have started a new herd with 3 and are expecting cira (babies ) in just a few weeks. We shear the alpacas & I have the wool made into batting for my quilts. They are such wonderful animals & easy to take care of. Love my babies.

I agree, top llamas, bottom alpacas. I love the tuft of hair alpacas have and love to hear them hum.
|
I agree: llamas mostly in the top photo and alpacas in the lower one.
|
Top Llama's and bottom Alpaca's. I keep them straight because Alpaca's remind me of poodles on steriods with that cute little top knot. I love the little critters and wish I had known about them years ago and I would have bought a few.

Hmmmm.. would like to have two of each (they are a pack animal and must herd); for my dog of course <GRIN> but DH said no .. Sigh..Oh well .. LOL

Both. Have to laugh, this made me remember something really funny. My son's band teacher in High School raises llamas. Hercules was his oldest one and was at the county fair every year. My son love Him. So I get a phone call one day from the teacher....He asks when he can drop off Hercules..... I'm like "what????". Apparently Hercules wasn't playing well with the others and needed a new home. My son told the teacher we would love to have him and that I had already agreed... I did not want a llama. This was life with my Robert. One day someone showed up with a horse they had given my son.......He forgot to tell them I had said no. Have a great day all.

I am so sorry your alpacas got attacked and killed. We have Nubian milk goats and multiple times have had attacks by dogs that are not properly restrained. Even with double fencing we have had goats and babies killed or necks bitten and utters ripped.
